MediaWiki:Support desk/pl Edit

Please, change it to "Panel pomocy". This formulation will be better in Polish. Marcin Łukasz Kiejzik (C, T, @) 16:45, 1 June 2010 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Yes Done --Skizzerz 23:56, 1 June 2010 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks. And please change MediaWiki:Manual-text/pl to "Podręcznik", add MediaWiki:Browse svn/pl with "Przeglądaj SVN", MediaWiki:Blog-text/pl with "Blog techniczny", add MediaWiki:Portal/pl (change content to "Pomoc"), change MediaWiki:Help/pl to "Dokumentacja". And one more question. Who messed up translation? Marcin Łukasz Kiejzik (C, T, @) 13:42, 2 June 2010 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks, done. Authors of these translations could be looked up in page histories, as always. Max Semenik 14:33, 2 June 2010 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Techni Edit

I am a MediaWiki developer [1] I seek to secure the articles on my development.User: Techni 19:51, 7 August 2010

N Not done MediaWiki developer means "have commit access to the wikimedia svn repository", which I do not believe you have. --Skizzerz 00:37, 8 August 2010 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Editprotected Edit

Could someone please take a look at my requests here and here? There doesn't seem to be an {{editprotected}} template to request attention directly there, so I thought I'd mention them here. Thanks, Waldir 07:34, 27 May 2010 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Yes Done by Happy-melon (1), Reedy (2) and MaxSem (3), (4). --Waldir 13:51, 16 July 2010 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Delete sandbox Edit

Please delete all old versions of Sandbox (delete it and restore the latest version). The version history contains copyright violations, pornographic texts which describe actions of persons under 14 (which may be illegal in your country), personal data and perhaps other content that qualifies for deletion. On the other side, the old content of the Sandbox isn't really needed. Example: copyvio from here (other example links may be provided on request per Email, I don't want to make them public).

I didn't start a regular request for deletion (a) because I only want old versions to be deleted and (b) the content of Sandbox changes often and the request for deletion would be removed by users testing on the page. Regards, --Church of emacs 07:05, 28 January 2010 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Yes Done Doned. Reedy 08:06, 28 January 2010 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Requests for protection Edit

We tend to avoid protecting content here unless it becomes high traffic or vandalised a lot so probably going to side on not doing it but I will let someone else decide. Peachey88 22:24, 22 September 2011 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yes Done both semiprotected indefinitely by User:Reach Out to the Truth - TBloemink 08:46, 18 October 2011 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Requests for deletion Edit

N Not done, $wgGroupPermissions is a redirect to Manual:$wgGroupPermissions so that it goes to it when you search it, Although I don't overly like these redirects (we should just fix the search) it isn't doing any harm. Peachey88 22:24, 22 September 2011 (UTC)Reply[reply]

User deletion? iantresman Edit

username: iantresman I want to unify my MediaWiki account with my accounts on the other projects, but I have lost my password, and stupidly did not add my email address. No contributions were made under my account. What do I need to do to get the password reset, or the MediaWiki account deleted, so that I can start again? I believe it is possible to match my IP address with my contributions on Wikipedia. -- 15:42, 18 October 2011 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Yes Done by renaming the local user account so that you can merge the name in with your SUL account. --Skizzerz 06:36, 19 October 2011 (UTC)Reply[reply]

2012 Edit

Problem with unified login Edit

I normally edit on English Wikipedia as wikipedia:en:User:Bazonka. I have been trying to set up a unified login account for Bazonka, but I'm unable to do this fully because my Bazonka account here at Mediawiki is inaccessible. I don't know what the password is, and there is no email address associated with it, so the Password Reset functionality doesn't help.
I had the same problem with my account at Commons. A bureaucrat helpfully renamed my unusable Bazonka account so that a new Bazonka account could be created (see here). Can the same be done to my account at Mediawiki please?
If you need proof that I am the real Bazonka, then you should be able to email me via my English Wikipedia account. Thanks, Bazonka 11:01, 16 March 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi. The account was likely registered in past by someone else and now it was renamed in order to let you unify it. You can login to using your central account now. Petrb (talk) 13:49, 16 March 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks very much. Bazonka (talk) 14:20, 16 March 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Actually that's not possible, Petrb. The account was created automatically according to the logs, and therefore must be unified. Me and other users have had the same problem. See bugzilla:29234#c4. --Krenair (talkcontribs) 20:00, 21 March 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hi, I don't think it's impossible since it solved the issue? I already renamed previous holder of this name, and as you can see in reply, it worked Petrb (talk) 09:59, 23 March 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
What I meant was that if an account was created automatically it cannot possibly have been done by anyone but whoever was logged in with the global account. I didn't mean that fixing it was impossible. --Krenair (talkcontribs) 17:30, 25 March 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
But this account was not created automatically, you opened wrong logs. The account was renamed, so if you want to see the reason for creation of original account, you need to open logs of renamed account. Petrb (talk) 05:40, 26 March 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The logs you linked actually show the process of login unification done after fix of this issue Petrb (talk) 10:01, 23 March 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

New gadget: Dot's syntax highlighter Edit

Hi, I'm trying to get meta:User:Remember the dot/Syntax highlighter made into a gadget for various projects. ResourceLoader/Migration guide (users)#Keep gadgets central says that gadgets like this should be hosted on So, I'd like to ask that:

  1. MediaWiki:Gadget-DotsSyntaxHighlighter.js be created with the minified contents of meta:User:Remember the dot/Syntax highlighter.js:
    function breakerRegexWithPrefix(e){return new RegExp("("+e+")|"+breakerRegexBase,"gm")}function highlightSyntax(){function u(e,t){e=e.replace(/\n/g,"\\A ");if(t==i){n+=e}else{if(webkit&&(/[!"#%&)*+,-.:;=\?>\\\]\|\}~]$/.test(n)&&/^[<\[\{]/.test(e)||n.substring(-1)=="-"&&e.substring(0,2)=="\\'")){e=""+e}if(s){o="s"+r;if(r>maxSpanNumber){wpTextbox0.appendChild(document.createElement("span")).id=o;maxSpanNumber++}n+="'}#"+o+":before"}else{n+="'}#"+o+":after";r++}n+="{background-color:"+t+";content:'"+e;s=!s;i=t}}function a(n,r){r.lastIndex=t;var i;while(i=r.exec(e)){if(i[1]){u(e.substring(t,r.lastIndex),n);t=r.lastIndex;return}var s=e.substring(t,r.lastIndex-i[0].length);if(s!=""){u(s,n)}t=r.lastIndex;switch(i[0].charAt(0)){case"[":if(i[0].charAt(1)=="["){u("[[",syntaxHighlighterConfig.wikilinkColor||n);a(syntaxHighlighterConfig.wikilinkColor||n,wikilinkBreakerRegex)}else{u(i[0],syntaxHighlighterConfig.externalLinkColor||n);a(syntaxHighlighterConfig.externalLinkColor||n,namedExternalLinkBreakerRegex)}break;case"{":if(i[0].charAt(1)=="{"){if(i[0].charAt(2)=="{"){u("{{{",syntaxHighlighterConfig.parameterColor||n);a(syntaxHighlighterConfig.parameterColor||n,parameterBreakerRegex)}else{u("{{",syntaxHighlighterConfig.templateColor||n);a(syntaxHighlighterConfig.templateColor||n,templateBreakerRegex)}}else{u("{|",syntaxHighlighterConfig.tableColor||n);a(syntaxHighlighterConfig.tableColor||n,tableBreakerRegex)}break;case"<":if(i[0].charAt(1)=="!"){u(i[0],syntaxHighlighterConfig.commentColor||n);break}else{var o=e.indexOf(">",t)+1;if(o==0){u("<");t=t-i[0].length+1;break}if(e.charAt(o-2)=="/"){u(e.substring(t-i[0].length,o),syntaxHighlighterConfig.tagColor||n);t=o}else{var f=i[0].substring(1);var l="</"+f+">";if(/nowiki|pre|math|syntaxhighlight|source|timeline|hiero/.test(f)){var c=e.indexOf(l,t);if(c==-1){c=e.length}else{c+=l.length}u(e.substring(t-i[0].length,c),syntaxHighlighterConfig.tagColor||n);t=c}else{u(e.substring(t-i[0].length,o),syntaxHighlighterConfig.tagColor||n);t=o;if(!tagBreakerRegexCache[f]){tagBreakerRegexCache[f]=breakerRegexWithPrefix(l)}a(syntaxHighlighterConfig.tagColor||n,tagBreakerRegexCache[f])}}}break;case"h":case"f":case"m":u(i[0],syntaxHighlighterConfig.externalLinkColor||n);break;case"=":if(/[^=]=+$/.test(e.substring(t,e.indexOf("\n",t)))){u("=",syntaxHighlighterConfig.headingColor||n);a(syntaxHighlighterConfig.headingColor||n,headingBreakerRegex)}else{u("=",n)}break;case"*":case"#":case":":u(i[0],syntaxHighlighterConfig.listAndIndentColor||n);break;case";":u(";",syntaxHighlighterConfig.headingColor||n);a(syntaxHighlighterConfig.headingColor||n,headingBreakerRegex);break;case"-":u(i[0],syntaxHighlighterConfig["hrColor"]);break;case"\\":if(i[0].length==6){u("\\'\\'\\'",syntaxHighlighterConfig.boldColor||n);a(syntaxHighlighterConfig.boldColor||n,boldBreakerRegex)}else{u("\\'\\'",syntaxHighlighterConfig.italicColor||n);a(syntaxHighlighterConfig.italicColor||n,italicBreakerRegex)}break;case"~":u(i[0],syntaxHighlighterConfig.signatureColor||n);break;case"&":u(i[0],syntaxHighlighterConfig.entityColor||n)}r.lastIndex=t}}lastText=wpTextbox1.value;var e=lastText.replace(/['\\]/g,"\\$&")+"\n";var t=0;var n="";var r=0;var i;var s=true;var o;if(presto){e+=Array(wpTextbox1.scrollWidth).join(" ")}var;a("inherit",defaultBreakerRegex);u(e.substring(t),"inherit");syntaxStyleElement.textContent=n.substring(2)+"'}";var;if(l-f>150){clearInterval(highlightSyntaxIfNeededIntervalID);syntaxStyleElement.textContent="";wpTextbox1.removeEventListener("input",highlightSyntax);"";"";"red";"";"bold";"";wpTextbox0.appendChild(document.createTextNode("Syntax highlighting on this page was disabled because your computer is too slow.   2. The contents of meta:User:Remember the dot/Syntax highlighter be copied to User:Remember the dot/Syntax highlighter.
  3. MediaWiki:Gadget-DotsSyntaxHighlighter be created with
    * [[User:Remember the dot/Syntax highlighter|Dot's syntax highlighter]], make syntax stand out colorfully in the edit box. Works best in [[Mozilla Firefox|Firefox]], works almost all of the time in [[Opera (web browser)|Opera]], and works most of the time in [[Google Chrome|Chrome]]. '''Should not''' be used with the browser's page zoom feature.
  4. The following line be added to MediaWiki:Gadgets-definition under "editing-gadgets":

I hope you find this gadget helpful. There is a related discussion at wikipedia:Wikipedia:Gadget/proposals#Syntax highlighter about getting this onto the English Wikipedia. —Remember the dot (talk) 21:43, 25 November 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I've done #2, though you could've done it yourself. For #1, can we please not use minified JS? --Krenair (talkcontribs) 21:51, 25 November 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I didn't want to move the documentation before the source code was moved, but I suppose it doesn't really matter. I provided minified code because I don't know of any other way to minify the script than to minify it manually. Gadgets hosted locally and used locally are minified through the local ResourceLoader, but this is not the case when loading a gadget cross-wiki. The regular source code will still be available (I'll move it here also) no matter what. —Remember the dot (talk) 22:00, 25 November 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Request access to old username Jpostlethwaite Edit

I am a former employee at the Wikimedia Foundation. I would like to get access to my username:

I am using this account on Gerrit:,n,z

I would like to continue working on extensions in which I am the maintainer:

Note: When I try to reclaim with lost password, Mediawiki says it sent the password to my email, but nothing ever shows up. I believe it is going to my old employee email account.

Please block users for identity theft (falsely impersonating others) and repeated vandalism Edit

Hello - Can you please block the following users for repeated vandalism: Wiki Dick heads, Don't work for Skilled! , Abused by SKILLED. Please also block the following users: Pborobokas , A Pizzoni , Richard(E) Glover , Peter Eaves. These are false impersonations of staff members at SKILLED Group and the user is posting dafamatory comments. We know who is doing this and are following this up in Australia.- ltobrien

Hello. This does not appear to be happening on this wiki. Did you mean to post this on some other wiki? (in that case, we have no responsibility for it).--Jasper Deng (talk) 03:30, 23 February 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Deletion request Edit

Hello, I don't know whether it is the good place to ask, but could you delete this page ? Is is a (blanked) copy of this message. I did a mistake when saving it twice. Thanks in advance, NemesisIII (talk) 19:36, 4 March 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@NemesisIII: Yes Done. Jdforrester (WMF) (talk) 20:06, 4 March 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Deletion request #2 - this time its serious.... Edit

Hello, I also don't know whether this is the best place to ask, but please would you delete this page? It is deprecated and it's information duplicated and expanded upon here. Thanks in advance.

Might I also be made an administrator, or at least someone with permission to delete pages I have created to avoid needing to bother you guys in future? I would understand if you decline this second element of my request. :)

Note Note: The best place to ask is on that particular wiki. This wiki is for the documentation of the MediaWiki software, and any requests here can and will only affect pages on the domain. If you have a problem with another wiki, you need to ask there. Since I see the domain for that wiki ends in ".local" either it is a company/intranet wiki or a wiki you installed locally for testing. Either way, see Help:Deleting a page for more information on how to delete pages. --Skizzerz 14:32, 24 April 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]
N Not done - As said above, this wiki is for documentation of the MediaWiki software. We cannot delete pages on that wiki since we are not local administrators there. As it is on a .local domain name, we cannot access that wiki. You should navigate to Special:ListAdmins on that wiki and request one of them to delete it. --GeorgeBarnick (talk) 19:10, 24 April 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Deletion of Wawa06's posts Edit

Can an administrator look into these LQT posts and maybe delete them? whym (talk) 09:18, 16 May 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Semi-protection of How to contribute Edit

Can you please semi-protect How to contribute and/or its translation pages for repeated vandalism? --Shirayuki (talk) 10:20, 30 May 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Done on How to contribute. Which translation pages in specific? I don't have time to look at the revision histories of all of them. Or are they all in need of protection? --GeorgeBarnick (talk) 14:44, 30 May 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I think the latter. Thanks in advance. --Shirayuki (talk) 21:16, 30 May 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Translation pages can't be protected because they can't be edited (only Special:Translate can edit them). If vandalism is serious, we could recursively protect all translation unit pages. --Nemo 05:20, 31 May 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yes, all unit pages should be protected recursively. e.g. be-tarask, ast
Done but I had forgotten cascading semiprotection is not possible. I did anyway because it doesn't prevent new translations, so we can bear for some time. --Nemo 09:30, 31 May 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Undo the latest two edits on How to contribute/ksh (diff) --Shirayuki (talk) 08:56, 2 June 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]
From my point of few this semi-protedtion is just frustrating. since months I try to update the lb-version of this page.
If you really want me to give this up please delete as well all lb-translations already done on this page: How_to_contribute/lb. --Robby (talk) 10:51, 12 April 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Mark for translation Edit

Could someone please mark the recent updates to Compatibility for translation? Please also keep an eye on Special:PageTranslation. whym (talk) 13:35, 5 June 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I just did a few dozens pages, but there were virtually no real changes and where there are some they are wrong (please check the current list). I expect this task to become easier for translation admins, hence faster on average, whenever gerrit:132636 is merged (it may take hours or years though, no idea). --Nemo 13:59, 5 June 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks a lot! Did you check this? It is a meaningful change and looks right to me. (I'm no expert on this topic, though.) whym (talk) 10:18, 6 June 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Please block User:AtroPix Edit

Please block AtroPix for excessive vandalism on Multimedia/Media Viewer/de. e.g. [2], [3] --Shirayuki (talk) 01:31, 8 June 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I've put a warning on their talk page. If they persist, I'll block them. --GeorgeBarnick (talk) 15:53, 8 June 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Change Abuse filter block lengths to 3 months for IPs only Edit

I tried enabling automatic blocking for Special:AbuseFilter/28 but I forgot that this wiki hasn't configured $wgAbuseFilterAnonBlockDuration to be a finite duration yet. I think this would require at least some form of consensus. I am proposing 3 months because that is what I usually use for blocks of those spambots.--Jasper Deng (talk) 18:41, 22 August 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

3 months is definitely better than infinite. There's quite a huge gap however from this and, say, the 24 hours of autoblock; you may want to consider if few weeks actually suffice, for such IPs (are they even static?). If you think 3 months is best, let's go for it for now. --Nemo 09:16, 23 August 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Personally I think 1 month should be all that's necessary on automatic blocks. If an IP is seen to get automatically blocked more than once, a manual, longer block can be implemented. 3 months is just a bit long as far as automatic blocks go in my opinion. Whatever works best for everyone else is fine for me though. --GeorgeBarnick (talk) 18:26, 23 August 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Support either 3 months or 1 month (don't care which). I had this same idea myself before I even saw this here. Jackmcbarn (talk) 01:50, 1 September 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I've opened bugzilla:70828. Jackmcbarn (talk) 15:04, 14 September 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yes Done by Reedy. Jackmcbarn (talk) 19:29, 16 September 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]
We now have an example of a block to a "normal" IP which almost 3 months later blocked a good faith user: Special:AbuseFilter/24. Perhaps we should reduce to 1 month, as most people above seemed to be content with? Or we need to make sure that blocking filters don't block home/consumer dynamic IPs. --Nemo 07:24, 23 February 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Well, it theoretically could be done, right? Leucosticte (talk) 18:27, 24 October 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Technically it would be possible, but there is no reason to do so. And sysadmin is a usergroup "to perform actions for technical reasons". And i see no technical reason to do anything here :) --Florianschmidtwelzow (talk) 07:54, 27 October 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Import w:fr:Aide:Pywikipedia/ Edit

This page is a (partially) translated version of Manual:Pywikibot/ Could you import it as Manual:Pywikibot/ We don't need it anymore on Wikipedia, but it could still be useful for other projects. Thanks, Orlodrim (talk) 01:19, 1 November 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Request block of User:Eye Compagny Edit

Please block Special:Contributions/Eye Compagny for vandalism (see contributions) and unwanted username. It is a misspelling of a Dutch company called Eye Company. After being blocked on the Dutch Wikipedia for unwanted username, the user started vandalising here. After a short while the user stopped. However I don't think the user is planning on doing anything helpful for this project. Mbch331 (talk) 14:13, 5 March 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Import a few b:en:User:Ivan Shmakov, b:ru:User:Ivan Shmakov subpages Edit

Unless I be mistaken, the documentation for MediaWiki-related software is well within the scope of this wiki. Among such packages I was loosely working on last year (and hopefully will get back to somewhat later) are:

  • MediaWiki-API2 – a fork of the MediaWiki-API MediaWiki API interface for Perl;
  • a few command-line tools (including mwlist and mwpatch) employing this interface.

I have a couple of reasons to prefer this wiki rather than Wikibooks for working on the documentation for these packages. (One of the reasons being, obviously, Extension:Translate.) If it indeed fits the scope of the project, could someone please import the respective subpages (see below) from English Wikibooks into my “user space” here? (I will then request removal of these pages from the former location.)

One another package of such a kind is MW – a modular MediaWiki interface for GNU Emacs, whose documentation in Russian is now available from b:ru:Участник:Ivan Shmakov/MediaWiki как система управления редакциями. Curiously, does it make sense to move it here as well, or will it be, in essence, necessary to start this page anew in order to utilize Extension:Translate?

Anything else I should consider?

Thanks in advance.

Remove adminship from old WMF staff accounts Edit

 Broken Abuse Filter Edit

Hi guys, can you please have a look at the AbuseFilter and fix the wrong blocks, which it is making? E.g. see the block of my IP 88.130... from today (December 2nd), 13:30 o'clock. I was answering a support request on the Support Desk and in the answer I wanted to include a link to an older Support Topic. The topic name is one of these random numbers. As soon as I try to point to a topic, it incorrectly blocks me, telling me, I would be a spam bot doing a mass attack. It would be great, if this broken spam filter could be fixed, so that it at least properly allows links again. Cheers! Jörg -- 22:54, 2 December 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Internal links inside also are not working correctly. This misconfiguration currently prevents me from helping users at the Support Desk. -- 15:45, 4 December 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hello! Thanks for mentioning the problem here, and sorry for any inconvenience :( I changed the filter to not block users anymore and the filter rules should be more specific when identifying the real spam and let you post links :) Please give me some feedback, if you still have problems :) Best! --Florianschmidtwelzow (talk) 16:45, 4 December 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hi Florian,
it is better now, but the problem is not yet solved.
Links to Flow topics and internal links with twice two square brackets seem to be working correctly now.
What is not working yet, are external links to E.g. a link to api.php or a link to the history function with an old revision or so. -- 19:00, 4 December 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Quiddity (WMF): So I've got User talk:MarcoAurelio/Archive 1 which is an old flow board. I changed its content model to wikitext, deleted it and... suprise! The flow board re-appeared. Can that be fixed? I repeated the process w/o deleting this time. Regards, MarcoAurelio (talk) 19:01, 11 July 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@MarcoAurelio: Redlink talkpages are flow by default. If you want to keep that page as a wikitext page, the easiest solution is to either add some content (e.g. {{archive}}) or redirect it back to your existing talkpage. Quiddity (WMF) (talk) 19:09, 11 July 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Quiddity (WMF): Thank you. Ah, so everything in User_talk: is now flow by default, even subpages? In that case I'll leave the page as it is now. Regards, MarcoAurelio (talk) 19:12, 11 July 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Delete Talk:Technical Collaboration Guideline/Vision Edit

Please delete Talk:Technical Collaboration Guideline/Vision to make space for move from the actual talk page, which was moved and made orphan without reason (the new talk page is empty). Users expect to be able to find and follow comments to a page but outside the page itself in the standard ways (clicking the "Talk" tab, watchlisting the subject page) but the moving user declined to consider solutions for that problem. Nemo 08:30, 31 May 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I actually proposed a solution allowing to keep the default discussion pages based on Flow and the extra wikitext-based discussion pages created manually by a user, having both of them linked to each other and to their content page. I explained my reasoning to Nemo.--Qgil-WMF (talk) 08:51, 31 May 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
N Not done; I don't see a reason to fork the conversation away from the standard place. Also, please don't edit war, let alone to subvert this wiki's decision to use Flow by default on talk pages. Jdforrester (WMF) (talk) 14:55, 31 May 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Redirect override tool not working Edit

As seen from my account logs, I've been moving the pages for early MediaWiki versions into their own pages rather than subpages of the Release notes pages. For the first two moves, MediaWiki 1.1 and MediaWiki 1.2, I was able to successfully delete the existing redirect and move the page to the new name with ease. However, for some reason, on MediaWiki 1.3 and up, I can no longer do this. Attempting to move Release notes/1.3 to MediaWiki 1.3 and delete the existing redirect at MediaWiki 1.3 results in an error saying that I do not have permission to do such. I've copy-pasted MediaWiki 1.3 and I need an admin to histmerge, but before copy-pasting all the other versions from 1.4 and up, I was wondering if someone would know what the problem here is. Thanks. Nestor Lozano (talk) 14:17, 14 August 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@MarcoAurelio: Hey there. I'm not sure blanking the extension's page is the right approach here – don't we normally just mark it as unsupported? Happy to delete them all but can you link to equivalent examples? Don't want to set a new precedent without discussion. :-)
BTW, I think these kind of items should go on Project:Current issues – it's not a user rights request or other +bureaucrat task request, just a regular +sysop (well, +translateadmin) action thing. Jdforrester (WMF) (talk) 00:16, 11 September 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Non-MW related manual talk pages Edit

On manual talk pages which are not directly related to mediawiki, the MediaWiki:Editnotice-101 message which appear while editing should be replaced with another message(s). There are many Pywikibot manual talk pages; try to edit one of them, and you will see how irrelevant are the links in that message. --XXN (talk) 09:19, 14 May 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@XXN: Perhaps non-MediaWiki content shouldn't be in that namespace – would it be better to put pywikibot items in their own namespace? Jdforrester (WMF) (talk) 00:26, 11 September 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Testing search in deleted pages archive Edit

During Wikimedia Hackathon 2016, the Discovery team worked on one of the items on the 2015 community wishlist, namely enabling searching the archive of deleted pages. Now we are ready to deploy this capability in production, and are asking admins of select wikis to test-drive this feature. After accommodating any feedback from this trial, we plan to deploy it on all wikis and enable it by default.

To test it on your wiki, please go to the Special:Undelete page, and add &fuzzy=1 to the URL, like this: Then search for the pages you're interested in. The results should show more results than before, due to using ElasticSearch indexing (via the CirrusSearch extension). If you find anything that is not right with the results, or that you want to be changed, please comment.

Please note that since Special:Undelete is an admin-only feature, this search capability is also only accessible to admins. CKoerner (WMF) (talk) 19:02, 6 June 2017 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Sitewide gadget edit request Edit

Hi. For MediaWiki:Gadget-userfeedback.js, there are a few checks that determine if the form should be displayed. However, it is still shown on soft redirects (eg API:Assert). Can the conditions be changed from

if (

action !== 'view' || // Only show when reading article

Allow TabbedWindow gadget to be used in other namespaces besides API/Help namespace Edit

I would like to request for MediaWiki:Gadget-tabbedwindow.js to be edited so that it can be used within:

  • the main namespace: I would like to be able to provide examples of OOUI code in PHP, as currently the OOUI pages just provide JS examples. Most of the OOUI widgets and layouts have a PHP counterpart implementation.

Require formal RfA/RfB for applications Edit

Yes, I'm aware of the fact that this website is controlled by the developers, but I think some formal record of why the user was given adminship should be needed. Just saying "trusted user" is quite generic. This problem cropped up when a MediaWiki sysop was attempting to become a steward - upon some digging, it turned out that the user never submitted an RfA and was just, quoting a user, "handled out by trust by a crat". In my opinion, this does not speak well for this site. Hence my proposal is simple: require that every user, developer or not, formally request adminship here. This is the case for every other Wikimedia site, and I am not convinced that this site needs to follow differently (even if it's not a "content site").

This does not mean that consensus should be obtained; unlike other sites I can see it reasonable for the developers to accept an application with no support votes, but I feel that record needs to be there. Leaderboard (talk) 10:37, 10 February 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I just don't see this being all that big of a deal. Per the box at the top of the page, all new requests for +sysop should come here unless the user is already a well-established developer. In practice, very few recent flags to +sysop have happened without an associated subpage here, so the change you're requesting is already de facto in effect (last one I can find was in April 2020). I'm not opposed to requiring it for everyone, but I feel that mountains are being made of molehills here. --Skizzerz 17:55, 13 February 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I likewise don't see the point of this. * Pppery * it has begun 18:45, 13 February 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
All that adminship requires is trust, and if someone is already trusted I don't see the point of extra bureaucracy. Having a wiki page is really no extra benefit than a log entry, it's just more work. And to be honest, I don't like dealing with spam and vandalism, but there are people who do enjoy cleaning that stuff up, and I am happy to do whatever it takes to empower them so I can get back to doing the stuff I enjoy. I'm also getting really tired of the trope that " is not a content wiki" - please, there's a ton of content on this wiki. We too are equal partners in the movement for free knowledge. Legoktm (talk) 22:34, 13 February 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hi @Legoktm: I agree that it's not right that MediaWiki is frequently considered as a "non-content" wiki. However, in every other wiki (except the test ones), there is no provision for someone to get adminship just by requesting a bureaucrat. This is true even for inactive wikis (as is often the case with very small wikis); users are required to post a RfA in a village pump or similar for a week. I do not see how MediaWiki should be any different.
Additionally, "Having a wiki page is really no extra benefit than a log entry" - this is not quite true. The reason is that a log entry gives barely any information on why that person was given adminship. In Charitwo's case, all the log said was "trusted user". That is no better than giving no detail at all. Leaderboard (talk) 15:18, 14 February 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Most RfA processes on large wikis are dysfunctional, I don't think looking to them for comparison is a good idea. Adminship here still is "no big deal" and I think we want to keep it that way. Ultimately I think we practice meatball:SoftSecurity rather well for the most part. Legoktm (talk) 17:22, 16 February 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
"Adminship here still is "no big deal"" - unfortunately, that's part of the reason the average Steward election voter has a (faulty) impression of MediaWiki as a non-content wiki (In theory I agree with you, not in practice however). Leaderboard (talk) 17:55, 16 February 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I think the perception has far more to do with this wiki's intended audience. We're aimed primarily at technical users who are running their own wikis, with a smattering of content for wiki editors as well. Because this isn't for a "general" audience, we get treated as a second-class citizen. Having an informal RfA process has largely nothing to do with this. Lots of the smaller "content wikis" have an informal RfA process as well.
Besides, we shouldn't have to adjust what we're doing just to please some arbitrary people on some other wiki. If there was a benefit for this wiki to have every rights flagging go onto a subpage here, then make the case for that. Given that the vast majority of them will be closed as complete without comment, I don't really see the difference between saying "trusted user" and flagging someone without a page vs saying "trusted user" and flagging someone with a page where all they say is "I'm a developer and I want sysop." In short, I think you're raising this for the wrong reasons and it is therefore not very productive to pursue this. --Skizzerz 16:56, 17 February 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
This page already serves as this wiki's RfA/RfB process, and in the time I've been observing it (a couple years or so) it seems to be working just fine. I'd be okay with changing things so any non-developers requesting adminship are required to use this page, but requiring developers to do so just seems like pointless bureaucracy - they've already been entrusted with commit rights; what, exactly, would a community vetting process accomplish that the developer vetting process didn't? ディノ千?!☎ Dinoguy1000 11:43, 16 February 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The problem is that often it's non-obvious that the user was promoted to sysop because they were a dev, as in the above example. Leaderboard (talk) 17:54, 16 February 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The developer community interacts on more than just this wiki. We also have Gerrit and Phabricator, for example. When I flag someone, I evaluate across all 3 for trustworthiness or to determine if they qualify for the "devs are entitled to sysop" rule. Catering to users of other wikis who are digging into why someone is flagged here is not a consideration for me whatsoever, and I have no plans to change that. --Skizzerz 16:56, 17 February 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I've withdrawn this request seeing the opposition. Just a note to the community: you can have only one of having common-sense rules and having the Wikimedia community treat MediaWiki as equivalent to test.wikipedia. I prefer the former, but some here think otherwise. Rest in peace. Leaderboard (talk) 21:44, 2 March 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
