KeyCAPTCHA

edit

Hello Jasper,

The reason of my last edition is that after your changes it seems like that we don't have a free variant without advertisement. But we have it. How can I change the description?

P.S. Regarding our account KeyCAPTCHA: Just one person (Maxim Vladykin) will use this account.

Best regards Maxim Vladykin KeyCAPTCHA KeyCAPTCHA (talk) 05:34, 9 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

I've updated the documentation to satisfy both of our concerns. I realize that you are tempted to be overly promotional of this extension, but the focus should not be on your or the end-user's monetization, but MediaWiki implications and a neutral documentation of the extension's inner workings. Most of the users who can install extensions are not consumers, after all.
OK, you say that only one person is using this account. However, are you editing on behalf of KeyCAPTCHA? Jasper Deng (talk) 05:36, 9 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
Hello Jasper,
Thank you for the changes in our description.
Now it's ok. I'm not going to change the current description.
I have just one account - KeyCAPTCHA.
So may I use it?
Best regards,
Maxim Vladykin

I mean, are you an acting representative of your organization? What I'm talking about here is a conflict of interest, which however is far less important on this website than Wikipedia. Still, it's a good idea to declare that (which you have, good job!) and listen to other editors' input. Thanks for your cooperation, and have a good time developing!
Side note: Watch MediaWiki's versions for any updates that could break your extension ;). Also, don't be afraid from making factual corrections! (as long as you don't insert too much language that would be promotional) Jasper Deng (talk) 05:49, 9 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for your explanation.
Should we add our extension to MediaWiki GIT?
Will it more useful for site owners based on MediaWiki?
Or will it provide us benefits?
Best regards,
Maxim Vladykin
KeyCAPTCHA KeyCAPTCHA (talk) 06:08, 9 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, add it to Git, because:
  1. It may provide an easier download access via Special:ExtensionDistributor
  2. MediaWiki developers are more likely to monitor extensions stored in Git
  3. Site owners find it easier to download versions specific to their version of MediaWiki as an alternate to a development version
You already have a Labsconsole account, so you shouldn't have much trouble doing this. Jasper Deng (talk) 06:11, 9 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
Hello Jasper,
I have read a lot of documents for developers on your website.
But I couldn't find any clear step by step instructions on how to add our extension to Git.
I would appreciate if you would send me a link to the instructions.
Thanks in advance,
Maxim Vladykin

Thank you a lot KeyCAPTCHA (talk) 06:41, 9 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
Don't forget to add a Git download link to the extension page if it's not available in Special:ExtensionDistributor. Jasper Deng (talk) 06:44, 9 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
Hello Jasper,
You added to our description "KeyCAPTCHA is implemented as either an HTML5 or Flash object. Choose the option that best fits your intended userbase."
But KeyCAPTCHA detects the mode automatically.

As long as you're not adding promotional stuff it should be fine to change things like that.

Thanks for putting the time into trying to train this kid. It must be frustrating. Sumana Harihareswara, Wikimedia Foundation Volunteer Development Coordinator (talk) 15:40, 9 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Actually, his mother should be notified. If I'm honest, I was already working with wikis in his age but my mother tried to care about my activities. My sincere condolences and respect. Tim (SVG) 16:11, 9 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, being a sysop makes this a thousand times easier. I really hope that he doesn't have to be reblocked, so that he won't have to make an appeal when he's grown more mature. I'll trust his own judgement, but yes we should contact his parents if he's causing trouble for us. Jasper Deng (talk) 18:24, 9 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
The question is just: how to contact his parents? I hope he'll not cause trouble again. Tim (SVG) 19:17, 9 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
If he causes sufficient disruption, I may block him again, and then require him to e-mail his parents' contact information to a WMF representative like Sumanah. Jasper Deng (talk) 19:42, 9 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
Otherwise, he wouldn't get unblocked. Might be an idea. I hope it'll not happen so. Tim (SVG) 19:52, 9 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
...especially since he was unblocked only under condition of forced mentorship to me, where my "mentor" role is really an euphemism replacing "supervisor". This kind of thing normally would not be our business, and I'd only do it as a last resort. Jasper Deng (talk) 19:58, 9 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
Yes, that's not our way. Mentoring is better than blocking him: you are somehow running him. Tim (SVG) 20:02, 9 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
Think of it as him being on a leash to me. I give him some leeway, but he's still required to obey me at all times. Jasper Deng (talk) 20:04, 9 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
Update: I've reblocked him, this time indefinitely. Jasper Deng (talk) 00:40, 11 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, it sounds like he has the reading comprehension of a nine-year-old.  :-( Thanks for trying to get him to see reason, and thanks for reblocking him.
If he reaches out to you via some other channel, feel free to simply say no. He's a very young minor and I'd rather not try to get his contact info, or that of his parent/guardian, without talking to Wikimedia Foundation's legal department first.
Thanks for your work on this. Sumana Harihareswara, Wikimedia Foundation Volunteer Development Coordinator (talk) 01:46, 11 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
No problems. I've fully protected his talk page per the standard offer; any other sysop (including you) who disagrees with my decision should take action as appropriate and notify me. Jasper Deng (talk) 02:10, 11 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Wow. It's now apparent that this kid has engaged in massive cross-wiki sockpuppetry. I've blocked a few socks that were confirmed on other wikis. Jasper Deng (talk) 05:32, 11 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
Update: This particular account of his has now been placed under a global lock. Jasper Deng (talk) 04:11, 17 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
Hello,
I don't even know who I'm speaking with or if you are even reading this message. I hope this reaches you.
I'm the parent of the kid being talked about here. I just found this page and I feel like I need to reply explaining exactly what's happening, as I got very upset with the point in which things have arrived.
In fact, I have, in the past, already spoken with somebody about this. On a live chat, I believe. But I don't see my arguments being mentioned here, so I don't believe our conversation was passed foreward.
My son, Brandon, is, in fact, 8 years old. He has Asperger's Syndrome ( which falls in the autism spectrum), making him both EXTREMELY smart and very immature and social unawear at the same time.
One of the Asperger's symptoms is having obsessions on specific themes: dinossaurs, space, computers, etc.. When it becomes an obsession, their brains become "genius" on the said issue as it's all they care about.
My son, at the moment, is obsessed with the computer (as most of them eventually do), space and unfortunately, also obsessed with Wikipedia.
When he's "arguing" his cause, he doesn't realize that extent of what he's doing. He just wants to win his argument because he cannot imagine his life without Wikipedia.
You may wonder why his parents didn't know about this, but trust me when I say it's not lack of supervision. Simply put, my son knows more about computers than we do. We can't add filters, etc... because he knows how to undo whatever we do.
In the best of my ability, I try to explain to him what's acceptable and what isn't, but if I remove his computer from him, the damage would be much greater, as in his mind (due to the Asperger's), computer is his life.
On a positive side, he's extremely smart, learns fast (he's 100% self-taught) and I do believe that with the right guidance, he has a great future on the field.
I don't expect to break or not follow any rules you may have. I only ask you to either have patience or ignore him. He's a little boy with a big brain. His knowledge of computer and specially the Universe is incredible. He's just very emotionally immature and, at the same time, cannot understand why, at his age, he can't do the things he knows how, just because of his age.
If you have any questions or anything regarding him, don't hesitate to contact me at: AlexandraGamaLima@gmail.com
I apologize on his behalf, for all the disturbance he may have caused. I'm sure that he regrets it at every now block or ban.
Thank you for your time,
Alexandra (his mother). 186.205.1.168 19:54, 8 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
I apologize for the size of the text above. I didn't know where else to write. I made an account now to make it easier. Although, email is still the easiest way to contact me. Thank you. AlexandraGLP (talk) 20:01, 8 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for telling me. I too cannot imagine life without the Wikimedia Foundation.
In my opinion, those with this syndrome often have difficulties until their teens. I wholly agree that such people really hate it when their core interests are taken away, since they tend to love those more than people without this syndrome.
It's extremely good that he learns fast, and he seems to learn the actions of others very well. This is very important in an environment like this one, and I admire him for that. However, the key thing he lacks is taking the perspectives of others - which I believe is the reason why he could not see why he was causing trouble.
With that said, however, regardless of the syndrome, his age is the main factor in all these. As I said in this discussion, I feel that he will be a much better fit when he's in his mid-teens; keeping your real name and age secret are two basic things he must exercise to ensure his own safety on the Internet. It's also the age at which I believe he should stop watching Happy Tree Friends until - it's not recommended for those under 13 years of age.
Thank you, too, for starting this discussion. If you wish to e-mail me, use Special:EmailUser/Jasper Deng. Jasper Deng (talk) 22:23, 8 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Why did you rejected this change https://www.mediawiki.org/w/index.php?title=Extension:AbuseFilter/RulesFormat&diff=next&oldid=526452 ? The PCRE is not fully supported by the AbuseFilter extension and Unicode is not supported. I haven't made this change without doing tests. DavidL (talk) 22:21, 16 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

No, much depends on your PHP version. You'd do good to examine the PHP code itself. Your change will be accepted if a developer can verify this. Jasper Deng (talk) 22:27, 16 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Warning templates

edit

Hi Jasper. What about moving this template and this one too to the templates' namespace (ns:10), seeing that are very much used? Frigotoni ...i'm here; 09:49, 13 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

They still have kinks - specifically, I want the conditional statements absent from when you substitute them. Jasper Deng (talk) 19:24, 13 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
So consider importing partially warning templates from en.wikipedia... Even though the skin of your template seems better :) Frigotoni ...i'm here; 12:48, 14 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
I modeled my own after those, but many links need to be corrected - we have no real unblock request system, for example. Jasper Deng (talk) 17:05, 14 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Sockpuppeteers and silly templates

edit

Hi Jasper,

I'm not entirely convinced about the necessity to create user pages for indefinitely blocked sockpuppet(eer)s and things like Category:MediaWiki.org sockpuppets of Itncp968. MediaWiki.org isn't English Wikipedia and we don't need to follow their convention on things; I believe the best thing here is to do what we've always done with vandals; revert, block and ignore.
Based on a quick IRC chat, it seems that I'm not the only one who feels so. Can we please get rid of these userpages and whatever associated things and focus our energy and productivity on MediaWiki and other truly important things instead of trying to maintain a list of accounts used by a Chinese spambot?

If you want to discuss this further, don't hesitate to contact me, either via my talk page or IRC. Jack Phoenix (Contact) 22:26, 31 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

I agree with Jack Phoenix. It looks like building shrines to vandals and other evildoers. MZMcBride (talk) 22:27, 31 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
(Give me a second to reply)
My only purpose in tagging them is to give CUs a convenient place for mining IP addresses used by this spammer. If you two wish, you may override my actions, though I don't agree DENY is important, since these spammers appear to be automated.
I will not be able to get on IRC for some time, as of now. Jasper Deng (talk) 22:30, 31 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
Update: Nuked them. Jasper Deng (talk) 22:33, 31 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Can this extension be used with CentralAuth?

edit

Extension:GlobalUserGroups

I ask because CentralAuth has a system for global user groups, but I would prefer this method of creating them, since it says CentralAuth groups do not show up in Statistics or ListUsers. Inquisitor Sasha Ehrenstein aus dem Sturmkrieg Sector (Talk) (Contributions) 03:03, 11 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

This would require $wgSharedDBPrefix, so first you must decide on whether you can use CentralAuth or shared tables for uniting users. I don't really believe the two can be comfortably used together (I think CentralAuth chokes on a $wgDBPrefix). Jasper Deng (talk) 03:14, 11 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
I'll just use the method that comes with CentralAuth then. Inquisitor Sasha Ehrenstein aus dem Sturmkrieg Sector (Talk) (Contributions) 12:59, 11 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

I don't answer such questions. If that's an error in PHP installation it might have something to do with file permissions if it's on Linux. On Windows it's negligible. Jasper Deng (talk) 00:36, 16 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Global blocking with CentralAuth

edit

How I do global blocking with CentralAuth? I assume the local RevokePermissions user group I created won't work, since it's for a different global login system. Also, how do I make sure that the spammer and troll accounts won't have access to all wikis once I create the global login? Инкуиситор Саша Ехренстеин аус дем Стурмкриг Сектор (Talk) (Contributions) 05:12, 21 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

You lock their accounts. To prevent more creation of bad accounts use Extension:GlobalBlocking and Extension:CheckUser to root out the IPs and block them. Jasper Deng (talk) 05:15, 21 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
I assume that means the only way to block them is after I create the global login? I guess I can just restrict editing until I have that task done. Инкуиситор Саша Ехренстеин аус дем Стурмкриг Сектор (Talk) (Contributions) 05:32, 21 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
(btw, if you have an instance of CentralAuth, link me a wiki where you're using them)
It's after you create a global login. There are scripts, however, that can allow mass cross-wiki blocking. Jasper Deng (talk) 05:40, 21 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Concerning; Extension:SecurePoll

edit

Thank you for your swift and speedily response. The citation issued was a public notice concerning the article page content. It by no means attempted to discredit the ability of the author(s). The extension 'SecurePoll' is not documented according to MediaWiki's standards of publication for extensions. No end user material has been posted concerning usability and other site related functioning.

If you are using this site as a storage and other means of content management not suggested by MediaWiki, then perhaps you should consider removing the extension from circulation and storing it in a user page format. This would more peacefully resolve issues and maintain the site's open source licensing provisions for public circulation.

Please contact me to resolve any other issues concerning the citation. A full report will be filed with site administration as of the date of this notice.

Thank you again for your prompt response.

Habatchii (talk) 16:32, 10 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

No. If the Wikimedia Foundation can use it properly it is not broken, and I'll warn you that if you keep wrongly posting an extension to be "broken", your account may get blocked. Lack of documentation is not a reason to call it "incompatible" - we don't have such standards anyway. Jasper Deng (talk) 17:29, 10 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

I should also add that if you want to say something about the extension's usability (it already says it's incomplete) you should use a proper message, not a template that says something completely different. Jasper Deng (talk) 03:09, 11 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Kinda weird

edit

How come an IP can create/edit a page that I cannot...! This is a comment bot offering which I can't delete and there is a lot of junk (from IPs) which I can't edit here. Looking at the history of the page IPs seem to be able to edit it freely. Puzzled - cheers --Herbythyme (talk) 12:08, 2 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

This is strange, and unfortunately global sysops cannot edit this namespace directly. However, anyone can edit it using the visual editor, but you have to use the Vector skin. Currently the only way to block creation of a page is to block the user in question. Jasper Deng (talk) 16:19, 2 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

How is having a user page grounds for deletion?

edit

I am very serious: I was furious when I saw that deletion. This is everything wrong with Wikipedia culture. How can it possibly ever be a good idea to delete a page that exists only to validate a user's existence and contribution? It is almost incidental that Dan is an employee of WMF and on my team -- no matter what he should have been welcomed into the community as a potential contributor and showered with encouragement. If he was a nobody and saw that response, I would not blame him for leaving your a profanity-laden comment and simply never coming back to the community. Is that what we want? Dsc (talk) 00:15, 23 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

It's local policy that userpages should be in project scope, if you want to change that please file an RfC.
I would not have deleted had I verified him as a WMF employee or if it have (WMF). It said nothing more than his name, which looks no different from a test page that's routinely deleted. I could've just as easily used "no meaningful content" - I don't work for the foundation and wouldn't have known he was with you.
Once again I apologize, though you should note that this policy is purely local to this wiki. Jasper Deng (talk) 02:07, 23 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
Thank you Jasper for the welcome message on my talk page. And thank you dsc for sticking up for me and other initially clueless users out there. I'm totally new to the world of wiki and I'm looking forward to learning more about the community. If I might suggest, the policy might be a little smoother if it had two steps:
  • Post the same welcome message you left on my talk page, with a warning added that the page might be deleted if it's left blank for too long.
  • If no action is taken to change the page within a couple of weeks or some reasonable period of time, then maybe clean up the page. DAndreescu (talk) 04:00, 23 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
I used to use {{delete}}, but when I did another sysop told me to not wait. I'm going to have to have a talk with that sysop. Jasper Deng (talk) 04:17, 23 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
On this note, I didn't have the time to leave {{scope}} for the user, which I usually do.
However, I do want to say that in the cases I've seen, a user with a userpage not related at all to MediaWiki is very likely here to do something off-topic. I never mean to bite new users and I want more people to contribute to the software. The local deletion log contains many such cases. Jasper Deng (talk) 04:36, 23 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
Could you please point me to the policy that says we should delete people's userpages if those userpages do not explicitly mention their connection to Wikimedia or MediaWiki? I'd like to suggest that we change that policy so that we *ask* people what their connection is first, rather than deleting straightaway. Sumana Harihareswara, Engineering Community Manager (talk) 14:53, 23 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
Project:About Jasper Deng (talk) 17:05, 23 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
OK, I see that there's an implication there that people's userpages should explicitly mention their connection to MW or WM. But I'm specifically looking for the policy stating that we should delete first and ask questions later. Sumana Harihareswara, Engineering Community Manager (talk) 14:41, 24 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
On that, I mistook another sysop's directions to not wait. SVG was that sysop and clarified this to me (and revdeleted Dsc's edit summary).
Usually that page's policy is grounds for speedy deletion, and there's nothing written down about the use of {{delete}}; {{speedy}} has been used in the past for such userpages too.
Nor is Dsc's comment supported by any existing policy on this wiki. Jasper Deng (talk) 14:52, 24 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Unnecessary deletion

edit

just to notify you i was merely using the page to create entries for the sole purpose of completing coursework for units that needed to be finished i did not need you to delete that page for me to have to rewrite all the information that was contained there it was only temporary and i would of removed the information after the units where completed perhaps next time you would wish to notify me of guidlines to creating entries before you deleted them 16abc (talk) 21:07, 18 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

I can e-mail you a copy, but were you intending this for Wikipedia?
Unfortunately yes this site is for documentation of the MediaWiki software only. Jasper Deng (talk) 21:14, 18 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
no this was not intended for wikipedia or any site at all i was merely using mediawiki to essentially create my own wiki as my unit was to design and edit a wiki that i had created and once that was completed i was merly planning to remove the entries and not use mediawiki again and no a copy will not be required i have rewritten the information 16abc (talk) 21:18, 18 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

PHP/MySQL question

edit

I'm working on a form application that I plan to use as a basis for the contact form extension I'm working on. (the login would be removed, as MediaWiki would provide the user accounts)

There's a problem that I get when I try to run the script for creating the database tables.

This is the page that has the script: ($dbprefix is just for this application, I'll change it to the one MediaWiki uses when I make the extension. I believe I may have entered that right)

<?php

// Get user account information from installation form

$new_admin_username = trim($_REQUEST['new_admin_username']);
$new_admin_password = trim($_REQUEST['new_admin_password']);

// Create the user table

$create_user_table = "
mysql> CREATE TABLE /*$dbprefix*/users (
     -> user_id    int           AUTO_INCREMENT PRIMARY KEY,
     -> username   varchar(30)   NOT NULL,
     -> password   varchar(30)   NOT NULL
     -> )
";

mysql_query($create_user_table)
  or die(mysql_error());

// Create table for storing messages

$create_message_table = "
mysql> CREATE TABLE /*$dbprefix*/messages (
    -> message_id      int           AUTO_INCREMENT PRIMARY KEY,
    -> sender_name     varchar(50)   NOT NULL,
    -> sender_email    varchar(50)   NOT NULL,
    -> sender_message  varchar(2000) NOT NULL
    -> )
";

mysql_query($create_message_table)
  or die(mysql_error());

// Create user account

$new_admin_create_account = "
mysql> INSERT INTO /*$dbprefix*/users (username, password)
            VALUES ('{mysql_real_escape_string($new_admin_username)}',
                    '{mysql_real_escape_string($new_admin_password)}');
";

mysql_query($new_admin_create_account)
  or die(mysql_error());

?>

Here's the error I get:

You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near 'mysql> CREATE TABLE /**/users ( -> user_id int AUTO_INCREMENT ' at line 1

Abuse Filter

edit

Hello, why did you revert my changes on mediawiki? The filter would have prevented abuses like this one for example: User:AlyciaTri. You should have refrained from restoring your version, in my opinion, since there are no false positives at all. In this way you have to follow all spammer's changes (part of this site, feel free to surf...), and when it updates its way of spamming (the text), you will have to reupdate the filter, whereas the site remained alike. Frigotoni ...i'm here; 11:29, 17 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

No. Your change caused the filter to block a user wrongly. Furthermore, I looked at its regex and for a blocking filter, that's way too general of a filter. Jasper Deng (talk) 16:18, 17 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
Nope, you are really far short of the target. Your current version continues not preventing some Ntsamr spammers from editing, and that would never have happened if you hadn't revert my version. The latter, was indeed thought to block that specific kind of spammer, and, barely it can give false positives. Regardless of the fact that my version is used elsewhere, any new user registered that includes a link on his user page normally has not good intentions, at least on mediawiki, where there are just spammers. So, how can you prove it, if you did not even try that version? Frigotoni ...i'm here; 16:42, 18 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
The fact that your version blocked a user wrongly is something I can't tolerate, and I predicted your filter to make more false positives because it did not specify that the user had to match the particular ntsmr phrases. Jasper Deng (talk) 18:50, 18 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
The fact is that you simply don't understand how the filter works really, otherwise you wouldn't make such deprecable speeches. Have you seen at least, on outreach how it blocks only spiteful users? And to think that there there are not so many spammers as here. Now, apart from the fact that it has not made false positives anywhere so far, supposing that it makes a false one: you can simply check it from Special:AbuseLog, and try to understand why the filter sprung. Do not guess about future then please. Frigotoni ...i'm here; 11:58, 19 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
I understand the filter syntax perfectly well. I don't judge the filter based on how it acts on other wikis, but from its conditions.
I cannot see why it would not produce any false positives if it didn't explicitly check for the NTSMR sentences, when the filter is trusted to block such users. Jasper Deng (talk) 17:58, 19 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

It goes to show that one's userpage (like forum profiles) belongs to the community (technically to the site owner) and not the user personally. Myrtonos (talk) 05:53, 29 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
Well, you still legally have some copyright over your revisions because CC-BY-SA 3.0 requires attribution by others when they use your content. Jasper Deng (talk) 07:31, 29 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
But on this wiki, as on any other, the webmaster/maintainer technically reserves the right to edit any page they wish, including others' userpages, provided that such edits comply with applicable law. And policy on this wiki allows you and all other admins to delete out-of-scope userpages. Myrtonos (talk) 07:53, 29 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

An important message about renaming users

edit

Dear User talk:Jasper Deng/An important message about renaming users,

I am cross-posting this message to many places to make sure everyone who is a Wikimedia Foundation project bureaucrat receives a copy. If you are a bureaucrat on more than one wiki, you will receive this message on each wiki where you are a bureaucrat.

As you may have seen, work to perform the Wikimedia cluster-wide single-user login finalisation (SUL finalisation) is taking place. This may potentially effect your work as a local bureaucrat, so please read this message carefully.

Why is this happening? As currently stated at the global rename policy, a global account is a name linked to a single user across all Wikimedia wikis, with local accounts unified into a global collection. Previously, the only way to rename a unified user was to individually rename every local account. This was an extremely difficult and time-consuming task, both for stewards and for the users who had to initiate discussions with local bureaucrats (who perform local renames to date) on every wiki with available bureaucrats. The process took a very long time, since it's difficult to coordinate crosswiki renames among the projects and bureaucrats involved in individual projects.

The SUL finalisation will be taking place in stages, and one of the first stages will be to turn off Special:RenameUser locally. This needs to be done as soon as possible, on advice and input from Stewards and engineers for the project, so that no more accounts that are unified globally are broken by a local rename to usurp the global account name. Once this is done, the process of global name unification can begin. The date that has been chosen to turn off local renaming and shift over to entirely global renaming is 15 September 2014, or three weeks time from now. In place of local renames is a new tool, hosted on Meta, that allows for global renames on all wikis where the name is not registered will be deployed.

Your help is greatly needed during this process and going forward in the future if, as a bureaucrat, renaming users is something that you do or have an interest in participating in. The Wikimedia Stewards have set up, and are in charge of, a new community usergroup on Meta in order to share knowledge and work together on renaming accounts globally, called Global renamers. Stewards are in the process of creating documentation to help global renamers to get used to and learn more about global accounts and tools and Meta in general as well as the application format. As transparency is a valuable thing in our movement, the Stewards would like to have at least a brief public application period. If you are an experienced renamer as a local bureaucrat, the process of becoming a part of this group could take as little as 24 hours to complete. You, as a bureaucrat, should be able to apply for the global renamer right on Meta by the requests for global permissions page on 1 September, a week from now.

In the meantime please update your local page where users request renames to reflect this move to global renaming, and if there is a rename request and the user has edited more than one wiki with the name, please send them to the request page for a global rename.

Stewards greatly appreciate the trust local communities have in you and want to make this transition as easy as possible so that the two groups can start working together to ensure everyone has a unique login identity across Wikimedia projects. Completing this project will allow for long-desired universal tools like a global watchlist, global notifications and many, many more features to make work easier.

If you have any questions, comments or concerns about the SUL finalisation, read over the Help:Unified login page on Meta and leave a note on the talk page there, or on the talk page for global renamers. You can also contact me on my talk page on meta if you would like. I'm working as a bridge between Wikimedia Foundation Engineering and Product Development, Wikimedia Stewards, and you to assure that SUL finalisation goes as smoothly as possible; this is a community-driven process and I encourage you to work with the Stewards for our communities.

Thank you for your time. -- Keegan (WMF) talk 18:24, 25 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Marvin JS extension

Hi, I just wanted to ask you a question. Do you know anyone with the skill and the inclination to write an extension similar to the Jmol extension (https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Jmol) but for the 2D chemical structure viewer and editor, Marvin JS? I personally do not have the skill to write such an extension but as Marvin JS is written in Javascript I wouldn't imagine it'd be too difficult for someone with the programming skill to create such an extension. How we will see unregistered users

edit

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)
