Please provide feedback on suggested improvements to the Code of Conduct
editThanks to everyone who’s helped work on the Code of Conduct so far.
People have brought up issues they feel were missed when working on "Unacceptable behavior" and "Report a problem". Consultants have also suggested changes in these same sections.
These are important sections, so please take a look at the proposed changes. I apologize that this feedback arrived later than planned, but I think this will create a better document.
If you prefer to give your opinion privately, feedback via e-mail is welcome at conduct-discussion wikimedia.org.
Thanks. Mattflaschen-WMF via MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 04:18, 24 February 2016 (UTC)
Please participate in discussion on updated "Marginalized and underrepresented groups" text
editThanks for participating in the earlier discussion on Talk:Code of Conduct/Draft#Marginalized and underrepresented groups. There was some support and some issues were raised. I've attempted to propose a better draft to address the issues.
Please participate at Talk:Code of Conduct/Draft#New proposed wording. Thanks. User:Mattflaschen-WMF via MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 01:40, 17 March 2016 (UTC)
A barnstar for you!
editThe Technical Barnstar | |
For your kickass work as a technical contributor. Don't let the unnecessary negative reactions to your obviously good-faith work get you down. You're a rockstar in our community and all of us other hard-working technical contributors notice and respect you for it. I don't know many people who deserve this barnstar as much as you do. - Hey, User:EpochFail. I'm so proud of this barnstar because it's from you, my the best teacher and one of roles models that always been there to help me. I don't give up as you thought me :) Ladsgroup (talk) 01:46, 14 December 2016 (UTC)

OOjs UI
editAm I correct that this change: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?oldid=640095512&diff=778525484 is not the same as the changes you were making at fawiki? (I'm planning to start a simple help page here for gadget/script owners, and I don't want to tell them that there's only one problem that needs fixing if there are two [or more].)
(Please ping me.) Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 19:29, 15 May 2017 (UTC)
- Hey, User:Whatamidoing (WMF): It's not related to the OOUI change, it's related to another change. Ladsgroup (talk) 07:11, 16 May 2017 (UTC)

- User:Whatamidoing (WMF): Thanks, It looks great but we need to wait to see if MatmaRex's patch gets merged or not. If it gets merged, we don't need to do anything. Ladsgroup (talk) 02:15, 30 May 2017 (UTC)
- Perhaps I'm being overly pessimistic, but I've been operating under the assumption that this patch would give us fewer, smaller problems rather than no problems at all. I would be happy to be proven wrong. :-) Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 04:22, 4 June 2017 (UTC)
- You are right, we still would have problems but that will be definitely way less than what we would have if we didn't do it. The patch is merged now \o/ Ladsgroup (talk) 13:28, 4 June 2017 (UTC)

How is this going for you? Did anything break again? Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 16:29, 7 June 2017 (UTC)
- I don't know if Matma Rex's change got deployed in Persian Wikipedia or not but nothing is broken so far. Ladsgroup (talk) 00:16, 8 June 2017 (UTC)
- The deployment train had some problems. I don't think that this new code has reached your home wiki yet, but it maybe-possibly-hopefully might happen later today. Please ping me if you see anything breaking. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 22:32, 8 June 2017 (UTC)
- The deployment train got resolved late last week. Tar Lócesilion[1] has suggested that the documentation be expanded, and James F has started doing that. Unless you {{Ping }} me with unexpected problems, then I think we're ready to send this to plwiki (exactly like we did with fawiki) soon. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 19:45, 12 June 2017 (UTC)

Removal of Phabricator Maniphest comments without notification
editThis is a repost given this edit.
Hi. Regarding this and this, can you please immediately stop deleting Phabricator Maniphest comments without notifying the comment authors? I find this behavior incredibly disrespectful and inappropriate. If you remove someone's comment on Phabricator Maniphest, you should notify them via e-mail, talk page message, or by leaving a subsequent comment on the task. --MZMcBride (talk) 12:46, 20 August 2018 (UTC)
I'm pretty baffled that you removed my comment from Commons when I directly linked to a diff from you on commons.wikimedia.org. You said that my note was not "in any way" related to Commons. That's pretty absurd.
If mediawiki.org is also not the "appropriate" venue to discuss your actions, perhaps you can point me to where the appropriate venue is? --MZMcBride (talk) 12:48, 20 August 2018 (UTC)

editHello, Amir! I subscribed you to phab:T210569. I hope you don't mind. I don't think that the Editing team has much experience with a Persian keyboard, and I would like them to be able to get that bug fixed properly. You were the best person I could think of. editWhy did you broke all the main pages of Wikimedia wikis? Hundreds of main pages shows ⧼wikibase-otherprojects-wikimania⧽ on the side bar. Looks disgusting. There has to be an immediate actions to make things fine again. It was your patch. --Ruby453 (talk) 19:17, 21 March 2019 (UTC)
Fawiki
editHello, Ladsgroup. Editing is looking at some changes to the mobile visual editor, and I was thinking about asking the Persian Wikipedia community to test them.
But while the team is still in the planning phase, I wanted to check in with you about how things are going there in general first. I've noticed the WMF sometimes seeming to "pile on" the same community before. It sometimes seems like every team decides that the same community or language would be perfect for their project. So that's the point of this message: if it seems like everyone's pestering your home wiki right now, then I don't want to add to the burden. It's no good overloading a community with requests. But, otherwise, you all are about perfect ;-)
, and I really would like to talk to people about whether the proposed changes would make things better or worse (or still not good enough). Let me know what you think? Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 19:27, 9 May 2019 (UTC)
- User:Whatamidoing (WMF). Hey, Thank you. I'm good and looking forward to my weekend :) Persian Wikipedia is among early adapters. For example, they were among first wikis to use partial blocks and given that mobile is widely used in fawiki, I think I might be able to pitch that. Can you give me more info or have a call or anything you like? Best Ladsgroup (talk) 17:08, 10 May 2019 (UTC)
- I'd like Persian Wikipedia to consider participating in VisualEditor on mobile/Edit cards (and later VisualEditor on mobile/Toolbar refresh). If you're at the Hackathon, please ask User:ESanders (WMF) to show it all to you. That will give you a good idea of what's involved. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 16:30, 17 May 2019 (UTC)
- Whatamidoing. I talked to Ed a lot and will follow up on that. I'm a little bit tired by the whole work there and will work on it once I'm back to Berlin. Thank you for working on it!Ladsgroup (talk) 20:41, 19 May 2019 (UTC)

User:Whatamidoing (WMF) Hey, I started the discussion two days ago and it's good so far. One person was asking if VE will be too heavy for users with slow phones. Ladsgroup (talk) 11:36, 30 May 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks. I'm so happy about this.
- The most honest answer to his question, of course, is that I don't know. User perception about speed varies a lot, and two users with identical objective experiences could have very different perceptions. Or even the same user on different days. (Sometimes, I'm in a hurry.)
- However, the key point is that we're not switching the visual mode on for people who aren't using it. You'd have to actively go to the pencil icon and choose to enter the visual editor. It's a 'sticky preference', so whatever you used last time is what you get this time.
- Would it be useful for me to make a screenshot that shows people what the relevant part of the toolbar looks like in Persian? Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 16:20, 30 May 2019 (UTC)
- User:Whatamidoing (WMF). I basically answered the same to the user. Thanks. Yeah. It would be great if I can show some pictures to users. Ladsgroup (talk) 14:51, 1 June 2019 (UTC)
- I've uploaded an image to File:Visual editing mobile switch Persian fawiki.png. We have a date now: Tuesday, 11 June 2019. I'll add the screenshot to the discussion. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 15:34, 5 June 2019 (UTC)
- Change of plans: It'll be 18 June 2019 now. That'll be a more comfortable schedule, I think. The project page should get a link to a prototype in between now and then. Please ping me whenever you want my attention – on this as well as any other subject. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 16:07, 5 June 2019 (UTC)
- It looks like this was delayed because phab:T220735 delayed everything, but it'll probably happen in the next wikitech:SWAT slot. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 19:42, 20 June 2019 (UTC)
- User:Whatamidoing (WMF) It's all good, that thing also postponed some of my work too. I think it'll be there around Monday. Best Ladsgroup (talk) 16:39, 21 June 2019 (UTC)
- Is all well? Are there any problems that I should pass along to the team?
- I just looked over the next set of design changes to the link tool. It's more of the same. (Ping me if you'd like to have a look.) Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 20:51, 25 June 2019 (UTC)
- User:Whatamidoing (WMF) No issues have been brought up so far. I'll let you know if I get anything. Ladsgroup (talk) 11:01, 26 June 2019 (UTC)
- Have you tried it out yourself? Has anyone mentioned anything about mobile editing recently? I don't like typing on a smartphone, so all of my editing happens from my laptop. Even "obvious" problems could be news to me. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 20:14, 9 July 2019 (UTC)
- User:Whatamidoing (WMF) No bad comments has raised so far, There was actually a comment saying they love it really bad and if it's possible to have that in desktop too. Ladsgroup (talk) 22:46, 9 July 2019 (UTC)

[WMF Board of Trustees - Call for feedback: Community Board seats] Meetings with MediaWiki and Wikitech communities
editThe Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees is organizing a call for feedback about community selection processes between February 1 and March 14. While the Wikimedia Foundation and the movement have grown about five times in the past ten years, the Board’s structure and processes have remained basically the same. As the Board is designed today, we have a problem of capacity, performance, and lack of representation of the movement’s diversity. Our current processes to select individual volunteer and affiliate seats have some limitations. Direct elections tend to favor candidates from the leading language communities, regardless of how relevant their skills and experience might be in serving as a Board member, or contributing to the ability of the Board to perform its specific responsibilities. It is also a fact that the current processes have favored volunteers from North America and Western Europe. In the upcoming months, we need to renew three community seats and appoint three more community members in the new seats. This call for feedback is to see what processes can we all collaboratively design to promote and choose candidates that represent our movement and are prepared with the experience, skills, and insight to perform as trustees?
In this regard, two rounds of feedback meetings are being hosted to collect feedback from the technical communities in Wikimedia. Two rounds are being hosted with the same agenda, to accomodate people from various time zones across the globe. We will be discussing ideas proposed by the Board and the community to address the above mentioned problems. Please sign-up according to whatever is most comfortable to you. You are welcome to participate in both as well!
- Round 1 - Feb 25, 4:00 pm UTC
- Round 2 - Mar 4, 4:00 am UTC
- Sign-up and meeting details: Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees/Call for feedback: Community Board seats/Conversations/MediaWiki and Wikitech
Also, please share this with other volunteers who might be interested in this. Let me know if you have any questions. KCVelaga (WMF), 14:37, 21 February 2021 (UTC)
The Inuka Team: We need your help.
editHello Ladsgroup,
Thank you so much for all the work you do in translating pages marked for translation. It is great to have you doing so much work to ensure that knowledge is available in other languages. Once again, we will need your help in translating the pages below to the language you know:
Please, don't feel pressured to finish all the translation; it is okay to translate some of the pages.
UOzurumba (WMF) (talk) 02:59, 3 March 2021 (UTC)
- @UOzurumba (WMF) Hello, KaiOS is barely used in Persian-speaking countries. What's the point of spending my volunteer time translating something that's not useful for its readers? Ladsgroup (talk) 17:53, 3 March 2021 (UTC)
- @Ladsgroup Yes, KaiOS is barely used in Persian-speaking countries. However, the knowledge from the project can inspire anyone from any part of the world. It is okay if you have so much to do with your volunteer time or feel it is a waste of time. You are not under obligation to translate. So feel free to decline. Thank you so much for the feedback. How we will see unregistered users
editHi!
You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.
When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.
Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.
If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.
We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.
Thank you. /Johan (WMF)
