Apostrophe

edit

Hello Krenair, can you please explain your revert to me? I’m not sure how it is in English, but in German we’re using the normal apostrophe which is ’ and not ' (which isn’t an apostrophe but often used as such instead, if there’s no apostrophe on the tastature – but it shall not be used in German Wikipedia articles since it’s not the right sign – typography). That’s why I changed the apostrophes here also. I just saw into the English article w:Apostrophe where I’m also told that this is the (correct) apostrophe. Maybe there are other conventions about that in English Wikipedia or here that I don’t know? I just don’t understand by now, what is wrong with using the right apostrophes.

By the way, the Quotation marks are also wrong most of the time I see them here. Normally, in English texts, they are “…” and not "…", but they also are often used as "…" which I don’t understand. If I had found the correct English quotation marks on my tastature at once, I would have change that, too. What do you think should be used normally? And you also reverted the wrong sentence again to „We a have lot of work to do“ which I can’t understand that way – what shall this mean? Kind regards, Geitost diskusjon 23:48, 18 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

I've only ever really considered "'" and '"' to be apostrophes. I rarely see people using "’", "“", or "”". Maybe it's a non-English keyboard thing.
That said you're probably right, so I've reverted it to your revision. :) Krenair (talkcontribs) 23:57, 18 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
Ok. I asked you because I’m really uncertain about the English conventions at Wikipedia or here about which signs shall be used or which ones shouldn’t (and perhaps only are used by habit or because they are easier to reach). ;-) I’m also seeing very often the ' and " in English texts and I’m always wondering about that. (I thought you perhaps might know more about such conventions.) ;-) Maybe, there’s a guide for it somewhere which I don’t know by now. I only know that these signs are also often used in German texts, but the conventions say that they shouldn’t, so a lot of people change them to the right signs. :-) Maybe, someone comes along and tells us more. :-) Geitost diskusjon 00:05, 19 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

An advice?

edit

Hi Kreniar. I apologize for the inconvenience, I see your advice towards me just now. Well, I'm used to tagging test pages with Delete template just because I use this tool. So I leave that template on every test pages/vandalisms pages etc. globally. But if you think it's better to use Speedy template here insted Delete one in those cases, I'll do it. Frigotoni ...i'm here; 15:34, 24 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

It's okay, I've noticed quite a few people tagging such pages with delete instead of speedy.
Speedy is used for things that can be deleted by an admin on the spot - spam, out of project scope, test pages, etc.
Delete is used for pretty much anything else. Krenair (talkcontribs) 15:58, 24 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Linking to a raw file on Git

edit

Heiya Krenair, you seem to know your way around in Git. In case I want to link to a raw file to display on screen which is in the root directory of an extension I do e.g. https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/gitweb?p=mediawiki/extensions/Validator.git;a=blob_plain;f=INSTALL;hb=HEAD This is understood and expected. What do I have to do if a file is in a subdirectory of the extension, e.g. /includes/Parameter.php So far I managed only to trigger a direct download? However most files are in subdirectories, so it would be cool to know how to do it. I currently have no idea how. O_o May you help? Cheers [[kgh]] (talk) 21:58, 5 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi. I definitely know my way around Gitweb and Gerrit as well to some extent. Just change "f=INSTALL" to "f=/includes/Parameter.php". Unfortunately because the file type is PHP it'll try to download the file instead of display it. This happens even if the file is in the root directory, and I'm not sure if there's a way to force display on screen.
What you might like to do instead is this:
https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/gitweb?p=mediawiki/extensions/Validator.git;a=blob;f=includes/Parameter.php;hb=HEAD Krenair (talkcontribs) 22:03, 5 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
:) Yeah, forcing php files to display on screen without getting a download was basically what I was trying to achieve. So I guess it is not possible right now. :( Hopefully on day ... I thought about your alternative proposal, too. I figured that it is not very elegant in case you want to link to a file for documentation purposes, since you get to read revision comments etc. Still it is better than nothing, isn't it?!. Thank you very much for your help and for fixing the link on my talk page. :) Cheers [[kgh]] (talk) 22:15, 5 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Speedy or Delete?

edit

Hi Krenair. Regarding this page and this one, are you sure that shouldn't be deleted as speedy deletions? Actually I wasn't sure too, but seeing their CA and their global contribs, maybe their aim was clever ;). Bye, Frigotoni ...i'm here; 13:28, 16 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Obviously if the page is out of scope it can be speedily deleted. However I wasn't sure if they were out of scope or not, so I changed the template to normal deletion. Krenair (talkcontribs) 15:04, 16 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I know. If it's so, I've also tagged this page with the delete one. However, their user pages (of all these users) are projected in a similar way, so it might be a misuse of multiple accounts. Frigotoni ...i'm here; 17:23, 16 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi Domotiki!

I'm trying to unify my account. Not Tarodnet (it was created to discuss with you), but Tarod.

Tarod is my username used in wikipedia and its different sites, except www.mediawiki.org.

I've checked the user Tarod in this site, and the user hasn't any contributions, so I suppose it is possible to change that username so I can unify my account.

I'm not sure if this is the best place to ask about this issue. Could you help me anyway?

Flow Portal/FAQ

edit

Can you please change the bad wording of my initial question? I'm afraid the same two users will continue reverting everything I do just because it's me. I really don't understand why they are insisting on keeping the question in that exact wording. Why am I not allowed to make it better if I was allowed to add it in the first place? Your addition was the first that actually added value to the page. It makes no sense to ask if "wikitext will be removed from the system" like Jorm wrote. It was not my intention to ask this. Basically I wanted to add the same question as in en:WP:Flow/FAQ: What editors will Flow support? Which editor will be the default? How will switching between editors work? TMg 21:10, 20 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

*Most* of their reverts were okay and I would do the same.
I might add some more text to it, but really what I've done so far to the page was to attempt to address some of your concerns in a way that would not be an issue to other people.
I don't really know how switching between editors will work. But I understand, from the post that you quoted, that Flow will support VE (as a default) and a wikitext editor (potentially only accepting a subset of wikitext... I'd be interested in finding out why this might happen). Krenair (talkcontribs) 21:42, 20 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
Okay, so I talked to Jorm and it seems that to switch editors, there will be a preference, and possibly a button to toggle in situ.
The wikitext editor may only accept a subset of wikitext because of the (currently limited) capabilities of Parsoid in comparison to the PHP parser. This is to ensure that other editors can still edit your message using VisualEditor (where some tricks might not necessarily be understood). Krenair (talkcontribs) 21:59, 20 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
I know this. I tried to add this exact answer to the page but it was deleted and replaced with the same nonsense as before.
I still don't understand in which way "Flow is replacing talk pages" is an answer to the question "What editor(s) will Flow support" (which would be a better wording for the question, for example). It's like telling the consumers cold refreshments are not replaced because we are replacing ice cream with vegetables. Could you please clarify the question and/or the weird "see above" answer? TMg 22:32, 20 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Signing using Visual Editor

edit

Hi Krenair. Please help test template VESign. Edit a page using Visual Editor. Add template VESign. Hit Insert template. Click on the puzzle piece. Add four tildes in the field overwriting the gray four tildes you already see. Apply changes. Save page. Retry. Document your findings. Please let me know your experiences (thoughts, feelings). What would be proper name for the template? What would be a proper name for the single parameter? Can you suggest any other improvement? Ad Huikeshoven (talk) 15:06, 13 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hey. Have you seen bugzilla:51154? I think a better way to do this (instead of using a template) would be to write a JS plugin to VisualEditor that inserts the signature.
Also, I changed the 'default' part of the TemplateData because it doesn't actually default to anything (just blank). Krenair (talkcontribs) 15:12, 13 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
I have read the bug now. Sorry I don't have any experience with JS. I have updated template VESign and tested again on user:Ad Huikeshoven/test. It is true that the default value in templatedata is displyed grayish in the dialog and those four tildes didn't write after hitting Insert template. Yes you have to manually insert four tildes in the parameter field. Those will display black in the dialog. Then after hitting Insert template you have entered four tildes. Which will render to your signature after hitting save. VE allows users to enter wiki syntax in template fields. Ad Huikeshoven (talk) 16:22, 13 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hello, it had just come to my knowledge (when looking at a few of my bot's edits) that all pages were moved from the VisualEditor namespace. These are important sections, so please take a look at the proposed changes. I apologize that this feedback arrived later than planned, but I think this will create a better document.

Hi Sherry, hope you're well and coping with this bizarre new world.
I did "Find the section heading, "How can we make this article better?" but located two different headings with that name.
I tried pushing the visual part a bit by trying to add RTL Language text and that didn't seem to work out, but then I'm a dumb monolingual Brit who doesn't know any RTL languages and has no idea how to type RTL. :)
I figured to ping someone I could type @ followed by their name, or {{ and the Ping template. Speaking of which there doesn't appear to be a UI for template use but you can trigger it by typing {{ anyway.
Trying to change the ping to your username with the space was hard until I realised I should click the suggestion in the UI instead of trying to type it to the end.
Other than the above, which is probably partially a result of me knowing too many ways to break things, it went well.
Thanks. Alex Krenair (talkcontribs) 20:58, 21 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, Alex. I asked you specifically because you know more than most people. I really appreciate it.
They've kept most (all? I'm not sure) of the keyboard shortcuts for the visual editor, which I'll find handy. I want them in the wikitext mode, too (at least for links).
The world on my side of the ocean feels a little bizarre right now. I've been thinking about doubling times: We closed everything down because there were X cases in the area and that was terribly risky, right? And now there are 2X, and in a while there will be 4X, and that is when we want to tell people that it's okay to re-open their shops and go back to work and school? If X was bad (and I think it was), then why isn't the prospect of 8X and 16X giving them nightmares? Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 18:36, 22 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
> Trying to change the ping to your username with the space was hard until I realised I should click the suggestion in the UI instead of trying to type it to the end.
What's the key sequence you were expecting would work here @Krena<space> or something? ESanders (WMF) (talk) 19:02, 22 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Whatamidoing (WMF): yeah... I don't feel strongly about it, it just seems a little odd to not have the UI for some things but keep the keyboard shortcuts for it.
Also, wow, exponentially increasing cases sounds scary, take care.
@ESanders (WMF): Hey Ed, so I think I was trying @Whatamidoing (WMF) and assumed that once I got to the end of the username (which the suggestions recognised) it'd automatically convert the text into a ping, but this didn't work and I had to click the suggestion. I think at first I assumed this was due to the presence of the space messing things up or something, but actually I think it happens with all usernames and that's just how it's supposed to work?
I guess one thing is if you begin to type the name, you'll see suggestions with opportunities to click (or hit enter) which will turn the text into a ping, but if you keep typing and type the full username, the suggestions disappear and you can't turn it into a ping anymore. Krenair (talkcontribs) 21:45, 22 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

How we will see unregistered users

edit

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

A global policy regarding the removal of advanced permissions (e.g.: administrator, bureaucrat, interface-admin, etc.) from inactive user accounts was adopted by community consensus in 2013. For that policy, inactivity is defined as having zero edits and zero administrative actions in a particular project for the last two years.

I am writing to you today because, to the best of our knowledge, your account has advanced permissions in mediawiki.org and meets the inactivity criteria from the global policy mentioned above.

Please reply at this Village Pump topic if you wish to keep all or some of your advanced permissions. If the community supports your continued access, your permissions will be kept. To the contrary, if you wish to resign all or some of your advanced permissions, you may request a removal of permissions on Meta-Wiki.

Please note that if there is no response from you by 2023-03-26, your advanced permissions on mediawiki.org will be removed by the stewards without further notice. You may regaing them using the usual local process.

If you have any questions, please let me know, or feel free to message us at the stewards' noticeboard.

Yours sincerely, --MA (talk) (via MassMessage) 17:14, 25 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
