Contributors group
|
The Contributors group is a Wikimedia Foundation cross team that gathers the following teams: Editing, Growth, Moderators Tools, and Campaigns.
Origin
editBackground
- Steady decline in active editors, for both returning and new editor cohorts
- A changing internet and other external trends
Our hypothesis
We believe that a major reason for this decline is that our experience is too fragmented and confusing
Our strategy
Prioritize clarity for Wikipedia contributors on web and mobile platforms
We need to create a virtuous cycle
We can fuel volunteer growth by creating a virtuous cycle for contributors starting with making it easy to discover compelling opportunities, then ensuring that they are equipped to act on those opportunities with clear next steps, and finally offering a rewarding experience that highlights the contributor impact, all while facilitating what makes the movement so special – human connections.
We will invest in 3 pillars to create more clarity for contributors:
- Tying the contributor experience to a central location where they can receive recommendations and understand their impact.
- Offering structured, discrete tasks to create more clarity and help volunteers achieve their potential by optimizing the workflows we send contributors to
- Making contribution meaningful by showing volunteers their impact and investing in avenues for human connection

editTeams
editThe Editing team was formed in 2011. They work on tools for editing—generally across MediaWiki, and the suite of editors including WikiEditor, VisualEditor and CodeEditor, plus specific tools like Cite, and many smaller tools like TemplateData and Citoid. The team is currently working on a set of improvements for VisualEditor called EditCheck.
The Growth team was formed in 2018. It works on a set of features to encourage newcomers to make edits. These features have been shown to increase engagement by newcomers.
The Moderator Tools team was formed in 2021. The team works on content moderation tool needs: Automoderator, improving Recent Changes and the Nuke extension.
The Campaigns product team aims to improve the experience of Wikimedia campaigns. The team was formed in 2021.. We focus on the needs of campaign and event organizers and participants. We plan to incrementally build and improve features in the campaigns ecosystem over time.
