Hi. Wikimedia maintenance notice and all of its subpages do not belong on this site. I think there's some general confusion about the purpose of this site. It's for the MediaWiki software. That's it. Meta-Wiki is much older and is the established place for inter-wiki communications such as these. The wikitech.wikimedia.org host is supposed to be separated from the main cluster for that reason. Though I have no idea what the load spike would be from a global banner with a link, so that might be something to consider. Meta-Wiki is the most logical place among Wikimedia wikis. Hi. My apologies for not responding sooner. Someone asked me on IRC why I had put the page here, and my answer was: "The last time we used a maintenance banner was for the deployment of MediaWiki 1.17, and the page we linked to back then was on mediawiki.org". I had only a few hours to prepare this last week, and I just didn't think much about which wiki was best.
I agree meta is the logical place for this set of pages, which is why I've just exported them there. There are reasons for using the wikitech wiki, but also reasons for not using it (e.g. it's not a SUL wiki, people can't contribute translations there, etc.).
Maybe we'll find a better place in the future (e.g. a place that doesn't go down when the site is down, but can still handle high traffic when linked from CentralNotice, and where people can contribute translations), but for now meta is a good enough place. guillom 13:38, 30 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hi. These updates are transcluded from the monthly report (Wikimedia engineering report/2011/October), so I use the date of the last day of that month. The updates are expected to be an accurate reflection of what happened during that month, so if there's new information in the next 5 days, the statuses will be updated. I found MediaWiki architecture document/text from Sumana Harihareswara's post mentioning it, it's fantastic!

I assume then it will get categories and a lot of missing wiki linking (few will have heard of en:PECL). If you need help with that, let me know ("spage" on the server skierpage.com). Already it's so good I added a link to it to Manual:MediaWiki architecture

Screenshots and categories edit

Hello, is there any way to make WMF employees categorize their images and files? Especially when one is uploading dozens of screenshots or mockups for their software development project, I suppose they want them to actually be seen and not just lost in an ocean of unbrowsable files. Currently, the only reliable way to find such files is to open the upload log of all WMF employees/contractors (and there are hundreds) on both commons and mediawiki.org; files in some of the subcats of commons:Category:Wikimedia Foundation software development and commons:Category:MediaWiki extensions were practically impossible to find.
Creating a category is really not that hard, they probably only need to know that they can/should create one for their project under one of those two on Commons.
The same for licensing info and so on, by the way; a normal CC-BY-SA tag and/or something as simple as {{free software}} is usually enough of a file description, without filling all the forms etc.; and if even WMF employees were too scared by Commons to find out, I'd really be extremely depressed. --Nemo 07:48, 30 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Template:New opportunities/Content edit

See new look of the MediaWiki/ru as example. Calling of {{New opportunities/Content}} in the basepage gives the correct result. These same calling in the MediaWiki/ru (or another subpage with language, which does not have own version of this template) - gives very bad result. More localized versions of Main Pages was broken. Translate tag + templates = ?????? edit

Hi Guillom! Something happened here. The template looks good when it's not transcluded but is broken/borken on all pages transcluding it: Mobile/Strategy, User icons, Enterprise hub, etc. Purging did't help. I'm really sorry; I set up the translation for {{draft}} and I completely forgot to update it for existing pages. Basically, there are two ways to handle template translation. One is to use the template with {{Translatable navigation template}}, but it requires to update all existing transclusions of the template, i.e. replace {{draft}} everywhere by {{Translatable navigation template|draft}}. This is quite inconvenient, so I usually prefer the second method: have the core template in a subpage (Template:Draft/core), and call the template translation directly from the template (Template:Draft). The advantage of this method is that all the pages currently using {{draft}} don't need to be changed at all. Hi :) There isn't anything else to be done once it's translated, as far as I know. The VisualEditor/Portal/Localization page gives some advice and directions, but basically it's just a copy/paste, made easier by the fact that it's under a PD license. You could ask translators to continue the translations :) Joke aside, what I've done on the French Wikipedia is I copy/pasted incomplete translations, then re-synchronized it with the mediawiki.org version when it was expanded. In the particular case you're mentioning, the translation is marked as 100% because there are translations for all the items on the page, but some of the translations include English text, and it's those that need to be re-edited to be fully translated. I was trying to make a localized screenshot of the “Insert Reference” button, only to learn there is no such button; only after that, I looked at the git log to find the change. There are several options to solve this problem, like subst:ing old reports, archiving and fixing transclusion links, or making the transclusion system more flexible (the latter is on my list for this quarter for other reasons). Whatamidoing (WMF): Yes, that would be the new default behavior if we went the "archiving and fixing transclusion links" route, but it would require changing MediaWiki:Gadget-WmfProjectStatusHelper.js which is something I'd like to avoid since it's more or less unmaintained at the moment. There are also more radical options like moving project reporting to Phabricator if we migrate our other development tools there as well. So this is a complex topic :) guillom

How we will see unregistered users edit

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

Your advanced permissions on mediawiki edit

Hello. A policy regarding the removal of "advanced rights" (administrator, bureaucrat, interface administrator, etc.) was adopted by community consensus in 2013. According to this policy, the stewards are reviewing activity on wikis with no inactivity policy.

You meet the inactivity criteria (no edits and no logged actions for 2 years) on this wiki. Since this wiki, to the best of our knowledge, does not have its own rights review process, the global one applies.

If you want to keep your advanced permissions, you should inform the community of the wiki about the fact that the stewards have sent you this information about your inactivity. A community notice about this process has been also posted on the local Village Pump of this wiki. If the community has a discussion about it and then wants you to keep your rights, please contact the stewards at the m:Stewards' noticeboard, and link to the discussion of the local community, where they express their wish to continue to maintain the rights.

If you wish to resign your rights, please request removal of your rights on Meta.

If there is no response at all after one month, stewards will proceed to remove your administrator and/or bureaucrat rights. In ambiguous cases, stewards will evaluate the responses and will refer a decision back to the local community for their comment and review. If you have any questions, please contact the stewards.
