Namespaces

edit

Hi, about the next deadlines, we are still talking about ns0 and ns2 only, right? --Elitre (WMF) (talk) 16:06, 20 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

I'm not sure, so I've asked. guillom 18:41, 20 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
And the answer is "we don't know yet". It won't be enabled for Template:, MediaWiki: and talk namespaces, but we don't know yet for the others. guillom 19:12, 23 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
Right now not sure is a perfectly acceptable answer, thanks :) --Elitre (WMF) (talk) 20:05, 24 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

WYSIWYG

edit

When talking about July's rollout, the Signpost social media accounts refer to VE as a WYSIWYG editor. I know James has written about it, so this is definitely something which needs to reach this FAQ page ASAP, but maybe in an even-simpler/really-for-dummies form that I cannot think of right now (or I'd do that myself :) ). --Elitre (talk) 09:08, 21 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Good point; I'll try to summarize it :) guillom 19:12, 23 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

I think I hate the Translator extension

edit

Kinda :) The sentences you see here won't be translated, I simply added that text somewhere else or just find it not useful. Our translation is complete, although the system says differently. --Elitre (WMF) (talk) 19:49, 24 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Translations

edit

If only one page about VE should appear on a Wikipedia, would/should this be the page? Are there plans to publish at least that one page on each Wikipedia before July 29th? --Elitre (WMF) (talk) 20:03, 24 June 2013 (UTC) Note to self of a general message, meta:User:Keegan (WMF)/VisualEditor/Wikipedias with a VE page.Reply

I don't know. I think it depends on whether the goal is to provide information about "why" or "how". Help:VisualEditor/User guide would be more useful if you want to give people practical information about how to use it. The FAQ is more useful if you want to explain to power users why VisualEditor is being created. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 15:49, 26 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Suggestion: Add list of supported browsers

edit

I see that the "Why is my browser not supported?" section states: "We encourage you to upgrade to a supported browser...", but I don't see a list of supported browsers. I was surprised that that VE is not an option on IE10, and also noticed that it doesn't work on my Kindle Fire. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 03:55, 1 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thank you; I added the information I had. guillom 12:03, 1 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

How soon is now

edit

Perhaps this happy note can be changed into something more realistic? Fram (talk) 14:55, 20 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for noticing. I am not aware of it coming soon, with soon meaning in a week or in a month. But given that I am not the dev working on this, I need to ask if they know more :) --Elitre (WMF) (talk) 14:58, 20 November 2013 (UTC) PS: I don't think that information was changed today, though.Reply
No, but it is still there today... Fram (talk) 15:14, 20 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
oh, ok. I (or others) can change that even now to be more... vague. Personally, I really like to update contents when I do have relevant information, especially in cases like this when a user noticed an inaccuracy, but that's just my POV! --Elitre (WMF) (talk) 15:19, 20 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
@Fram and Elitre (WMF): I've updated it. Thanks for the catch. Jdforrester (WMF) (talk) 23:03, 21 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

Template, parameter and list

edit

Hello. Is really helpful to insert a template with VisualEditor with Templatedata. But I would like to ask if we can have a list of possible values of a parameters. I mean, if I put a parameter that can have only 20 possible values. Can those values been showed in a list and choose one, when I choose the parameter in VisualEditor? Xaris333 (talk) 01:05, 18 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

@Xaris333: Thanks for the suggestion; this idea has been asked for by others, too, and is tracked in bug 51375 – I think we should be able to add this in the next few months. Jdforrester (WMF) (talk) 16:16, 18 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

Visual Editor and talk pages

edit

Why we can't use VisualEditor in talk pages. It wiil be very useful with some templates put on talk pages. Xaris333 (talk) 16:08, 20 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hi Xaris333,
VisualEditor doesn't know how to sign posts or how to indent threads, so it wouldn't work for most talk pages.
The plan is to let Flow handle discussions. Eventually, that could reduce the need for some complicated templates (because the features would be built right into Flow) and will also (eventually, not yet) let you use VisualEditor for the message itself. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 15:32, 21 April 2014 (UTC)Reply
Is there a structural reason it doesn't know how to sign posts? Because that's important for any social organisation rather than just for talk pages. Neonchameleon (talk) 17:35, 28 June 2014 (UTC)Reply
I think it would be possible to add this feature, if it were wanted. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 18:06, 30 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

"When will VisualEditor be enabled on my wiki?"

edit

Hi,

The schedule in the question "When will VisualEditor be enabled on my wiki?" talks about 2013. It's 2015 soon, so it needs an update.

Tagging Jdforrester, Elitre. --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 08:50, 28 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Amir, it mentions 2013 as history. The schedule for other deployments has not been determined. It's probably going to be soon for Phase 5 (diacritic-heavy languages), but it's not possible to predict the schedule for other languages at this time. Right now, we can't actually guarantee that Japanese and Korean will see VisualEditor turned on by default this year, although they're "close". A deployment to the Chinese Wikipedia during 2015 is sounding fairly dubious at the moment. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 01:19, 3 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

"Increase in vadalism"

edit

The current answer about potential increase in vandalism says: "This has not been a problem at any of the Wikipedias currently using VisualEditor."

My impression is that it's correct, but it would nevertheless be nice to link directly from this answer to some metrics that demonstrate it. --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 09:11, 28 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

2013

edit

In addition to the release schedule issue above, 2013 is mentioned elsewhere. All of these parts must be updated. --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 09:11, 28 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Wikimarkup

edit

Since January 2015 it's possible to use Wikimarkups in VE. I think that that FAQ should be updated.--Fringioα†Ω 14:44, 30 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

@Fringio: I'm not sure to what you're referring. It isn't possible to use wikitext in VisualEditor (except within templates, which is a longer-term project). Do you mean adding [[ as a keyboard command? Jdforrester (WMF) (talk) 16:50, 30 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
Possibly that, and the wikicode in galleries? --Elitre (WMF) (talk) 17:19, 30 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
I came to ask about the same. Using [[, == and {{ works, and it's a nice feature for power users. I mentioned it, but it was reverted. How high is the chance that this feature will be removed? --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 14:23, 4 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
At this point, nobody knows. I doubt that it will get removed, say, during the next quarter or so, but it would be preferable to not publicize it/encourage people to use it. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 00:14, 20 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
