Hi, Erica. Some screenshot-ja in Help:VisualEditor/User_guide/ja are outdated. They were made by LanguageScreenshotBot, so I don't know how to update them. Would please you have them updated? At least these below:

Thanks to everyone who’s helped work on the Code of Conduct so far.
People have brought up issues they feel were missed when working on "Unacceptable behavior" and "Report a problem". Consultants have also suggested changes in these same sections.
These are important sections, so please take a look at the proposed changes. I apologize that this feedback arrived later than planned, but I think this will create a better document.
If you prefer to give your opinion privately, feedback via e-mail is welcome at conduct-discussion wikimedia.org.

Grazie per l'annuncio del nuovo welcome, ma attenzione: noi vogliamo che i nuovi contributori editino nsPagina, e su nsPagina VE non funziona. Temo quindi che il messaggio di benvenuto crei solo confusione. Alex brollo (talk) 16:19, 17 May 2016 (UTC)
- Indago un po' e ti faccio sapere cosa possiamo fare. Grazie per il reminder. Elitre (WMF) (talk) 17:32, 17 May 2016 (UTC)
Elitre (WMF) (talk) 18:29, 17 May 2016 (UTC)
Updation of VE edit tag
editThe following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
Hello Erica, I've been doing a little translation of the VE interface into Konkani on TranslateWiki.net, and I recently edited the translation of 'Visual Editor'. I have also being trying out using VE in the Konkani Wikipedia (gomwiki). The tag for my edits still shows the old translation of 'Visual Editor'. Will it get updated automatically in time, or is there something that needs to be done? Similarly, many of the translations I've done on TranslateWiki for VE have not reflected on Wikipedia. Do you know why? The Discoverer (talk) 07:37, 22 May 2016 (UTC)
- Hi there. Yes, it takes a while for translations to go live. However, the message you're referring to hasn't been translated yet (it should be at https://translatewiki.net/wiki/MediaWiki:Tag-visualeditor/gom. It does exist in the translations for the Deva. script.). Thanks for everything you will do! May I recommend reading this page, where you may find more advice to "customize" well the visual editor experience to gomwiki. Talk to you soon! Elitre (WMF) (talk) 08:50, 22 May 2016 (UTC)
- Hello, thanks for pointing me to the message that needs to be translated in order to update the tag. In fact, there are supposed to be no translations at TranslateWiki in gom and gom falls back to gom-deva. So there only have to be translations in gom-deva and gom-latn. So I've changed both the gom-deva and gom-latn messages for this tag and then we'll see them updated in gomwiki soon. The Discoverer (talk) 13:41, 22 May 2016 (UTC)
Problem with interwiki links in Visual Editor
editThe following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
- Hello Ellitre, I'm facing a problem creating interwiki links in VisualEditor. On the Konkani Wikipedia if I type ':en:Main_Page', VisualEditor generates 'En:Main_Page', which is not a valid link. Then I tried it in enwiki and experienced the same thing. When I type ':gom:Mukhel_Pan', VisualEditor generates 'Gom:Mukhel_Pan'. I know some other gomwiki users are facing the same problem. Is there something we're doing wrong? The Discoverer (talk) 08:26, 12 June 2016 (UTC)
- Not your fault. You can follow this task to know when this feature will be added. Thanks! Elitre (WMF) (talk) 07:06, 13 June 2016 (UTC)
- As a workaround, you can probably use the full link, which is :w:en:Main Page (the "w" is for "Wikipedia"). That should work even when the leading colon is stripped. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 05:40, 13 June 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks for your replies.
- Another problem:
- On a Flow topic (such as on this talk page), switch to wikitext editor, and enter the following text (without nowikis):
- This is a link to Main Page on the English Wikipedia
- Then switch to VisualEditor and see the magic.
- Is this is a known bug? The Discoverer (talk) 07:47, 13 June 2016 (UTC)
- I wouldn't call that necessarily a bug: you're trying to make an interlanguage link here, and as the page says, "these links are treated specially, and don't show up in the body of the text". Elitre (WMF) (talk) 07:53, 13 June 2016 (UTC)
- Oh.. that's whats happening! I didn't realise that.
- My leading colons were getting stripped by VE and then I faced this problem, and I didn't realise I had interlanguage links.
- Thanks for your help! The Discoverer (talk) 08:32, 13 June 2016 (UTC)

Save/Publish
editThe following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
The Editing team is planning to change the name of the “Save page” button to “Publish page” and “Publish changes”. “Publish page” will be used when you create a new page. “Publish changes” will be used when you change an existing page. The names will be consistent in all editing environments.[1][2]
This change will probably happen during the week of 30 August 2016. The change will be announced in Tech News when it happens.
If you are fluent in a language other than English, please check the status of translations at translatewiki.net for “Publish page” and “Publish changes”.
The main reason for this change is to avoid confusion for new editors. Repeated user research studies with new editors have shown that some new editors believed that “Save page” would save a private copy of a new page in their accounts, rather than permanently publishing their changes on the web. It is important for this part of the user interface to be clear, since it is difficult to remove public information after it is published. We believe that the confusion caused by the “Save page” button increases the workload for experienced editors, who have to clean up the information that people unintentionally disclose, and report it to the functionaries and stewards to suppress it. Clarifying what the button does will reduce this problem.
Beyond that, the goal is to make all the wikis and languages more consistent, and some wikis made this change many years ago. The Legal team at the Wikimedia Foundation supports this change. Making the edit interface easier to understand will make it easier to handle licensing and privacy questions that may arise.
Any help pages or other basic documentation about how to edit pages will also need to be updated, on-wiki and elsewhere. On wiki pages, you can use the wikitext codes
and
to display the new labels in the user's preferred language. For the language settings in your account preferences, these wikitext codes produce “Publish page” and “Publish changes”.
Please share this news with community members who teach new editors and with others who may be interested.

Footnotes at Wikiquote

Hi Elitre. Thank you for your assistance in creating the https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T139442 ticket on behalf of the English Wikiquote. Unfortunately, it has been "declined" with the false assertion that I don't want it, and I wonder whether you could suggest any way to move this forward.
I am at a loss as to how I could have been more clear in stating that "references lists are completely deprecated", that "the feature is ill-suited to the way Wikiquote articles are laid out", and amplifying that "we definitely do not need prominent buttons or menu items labeled 'Cite' that have the effect of creating footnotes" (and on a collateral issue raised in discussion, that "we really do not need to have templates disabled" whenever we don't use footnotes). Perhaps I was less clear than I thought, or perhaps his comment in closing the ticket was only facetious way to get rid of it.
As liaison, could you recommend anyone in a position to advocate for the community who can help protect its interest in continuing to use the layout it has long preferred (and continuing to use citation templates in that layout)? Ningauble (talk) 22:11, 5 October 2016 (UTC)
- I thought that I had explained the confusion over the terminology at Phab:T139442#2695072.
- The current state is this:
- The English Wikiquote has hidden a single button related to the Extension:Cite in the 2006 wikitext editor (which almost nobody uses, except a small number of old hands). They have left it visible and functional in the 2010 wikitext editor (used by almost all editors who started editing since 2010, as well as most of the older accounts). And, of course, because of the nature of wikitext, anyone can edit the existing ones or type new <ref> tags manually, even if the buttons aren't there. Or even (as the product manager does) if you're using the original wikitext editor, which has no buttons or toolbar at all.
- In the visual editor, the equivalent button is buried at the bottom of a long, collapsed menu. But – because of the nature of a visual editing system – in the visual editor, if the tools don't exist, you can't just type in the <ref> tags. If the tools aren't there, then you can't edit existing ones or add new ones.
- The current request is this:
- So the Phab ticket (unknowingly) proposes making it possible for users of the three wikitext editors to continue creating and editing unwanted <ref> tags, and for the users of the visual editor to be unable to do the the same thing.
- The response is this:
- The devs refuse to create this sort of "second-class status" for some users. If anyone can edit or create (functional) <ref> tags, then everyone should be able to do that. If it's possible to create and edit <ref> tags in the 97% of edits made with the wikitext editors at the English Wikiquote, then it should be possible to create and edit <ref> tags in the 3% of edits made with the visual editor at the English Wikiquote.
- But the real (reported) problem is this: The English Wikiquote doesn't want anyone to use Extension:Cite. And the product manager is willing to turn off the whole thing, for everyone – wikitext *and* visual editors, on all pages, for the whole wiki. Turning it off will make people stop using it. You can keep citation templates (which are completely unrelated and under local community control). But if you want people to stop using <ref> tags – if you really want 100% of edits to stop creating functional <ref> tags, rather than just 3% of them – then we can kill that software for you in *all* the editing systems.
- All we really need to do that is evidence of a community consensus. A discussion in which people say "We don't want any more of those little blue clicky numbers on our site" is perfectly adequate for this purpose. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 16:53, 6 October 2016 (UTC)
- Sadly there are members of staff who even though they have a remit to "to help make sure the Editing department understand what the community wants and needs" occasionally indulge themselves is humorous remarks at the expense of volunteers by pretending to understand their comments in a way they were not intended and then giving mocking responses that deliberately miss the point in an attempt to be amusing. It's a form of humour that would be tiresome at the best of times, and certainly does not help to promote good relations between staff and volunteers. Occasionally the volunteers will be fortunate enough to attract the attention of a member of staff responsible for "representing these communities' voices in some of the WMF's decision-making processes" who will take the time to try and resolve the situation. Hi Elitre (WMF), I saw your recent post on the Meta:Babel discussion page and I am wondering who to contact in regards to renaming "Patois," (which isn't even the way Patois is spelling in "Jamaican Patois," it is "Patwa") to "Jumiekan Patwa."
"Patois" is far too generic, hence "Haitian Creole," (Kreyòl ayisyen) Scottish Gaelic," (Gàidhlig) etc.
This would really need to be changed. I would do it myself but I do not think I would be able, and quite frankly wouldn't know how to do so.
Any help would be much appreciated! Thank you.

Ciao.
Elitre (WMF) (talk) 08:46, 1 February 2017 (UTC)

Dear Elitre. I'm writing you this as I saw you updating the discussion page on the Egyptian Wikipedia.
I really need to know how to implement the last good edit to the Egyptian Wikipedia, because it is not as monitored in the past and nearly half of its articles have been vandalized and still left as they are.
At least tell me where to post that question and implement that. Thanks. --Mahmudmasri (talk) 16:44, 21 March 2018 (UTC) Esperfulmo (talk) 16:44, 21 March 2018 (UTC)
- If I understand your request correctly, you'd want some kind of "Flagged Revisions" enabled. However, one year ago the decision was taken not to enable that extension on new wikis anymore. The code is old and unmaintained, and it seems to be damaging communities more than it benefits them. I would recommend instead gathering a small but motivated group of users and look into the possibilities that ORES offers - basically, have artificial intelligence assist you in dealing with vandalism! You can leave a message in the talk page there, and someone will be able to offer more help. Elitre (WMF) (talk) 10:54, 22 March 2018 (UTC)

Since January, we have finished our work on edit notices, custom block messages, and abuse filter messages. Those features were released in 7.2.0 on March 13. Check here for detailed information.
Android
editFrom January to April 2023:
Since January, we've been completing our experiment with machine-generated article descriptions, refined our feature of shareable reading lists, and begun work towards adopting IP masking functionality. Check here for detailed information.
Office hours
editThe first Apps office hour was held on the 23rd of March 2023; detailed information about the announcement, agenda, and even the record and presentation deck can be found here.
Community meetings
edit- We enjoyed meeting the Dagbani user group for a one-hour meeting and answering all of their question about Wikipedia’s mobile applications and how to use them for reading, searching, and editing. The community users expressed that they care about having more offline usage capabilities, and a new section related to this topic will be added to the Apps FAQ soon.
- With pleasure, we had a meeting with the Commons volunteers to explore possibilities for collaboration between them and the apps team within the foundation. We reached an agreement to intervene in critical situations with the play store to ensure that the Commons app remains accessible online.
We are excited and willing to arrange meetings with other community members who are interested. You may also contact us at aramadan@wikimedia.org to arrange such gatherings. ;)
Exciting news: iOS is currently developing a watchlist feature. Stay tuned for our next newsletter release to learn additional details about it.

- Unleash the power of "Undo" and "Rollback" with updated diff pages! They let you revert changes made to an article back to a previous version, helping you fix mistakes or unwanted edits quickly.

We've refreshed our diff pages and added the option for experienced editors to roll back destructive edits. You can check out the updated diff page by tapping "View Edit History" in any article. - A warm welcome to the Tachelhit language Wikipedia!
- Connect across language variants with updated codes! When you venture into articles of different language variants, particularly Chinese and Serbian, you should find a smoother experience when using variant codes.

Android
editFrom June to August 2023:
- We've been finishing up our work on Image Recommendations (a new Suggested Edits task where you'll be able to add images to articles that are currently unillustrated). We plan to release the feature by September.
- We are beginning development on Patroller Tasks (a new Suggested Edits task for patrolling recent edits for vandalism). You can read about the usability testing we’ve conducted for the feature on the project page on MediaWiki.
- On a note of gratitude, we extend our heartfelt appreciation to the dedicated individuals who participated as graders for Machine Assisted Article Descriptions. Your invaluable contributions have significantly contributed to the advancement of our projects, and we look forward to your continued collaboration as we push the boundaries of Wikipedia's capabilities.
Community meetings
editOn July 30, 2023, the Wikimedia Apps Team had a fruitful meeting with the group behind the Wiki Mentor Africa Initiative. Over 100 participants joined on Zoom, with others watching the YouTube live stream. The presentation covered the Apps' history, roadmap, open questions, feature reviews, and FAQs. Valuable feedback was shared, enhancing the apps' development and user experience. These collaborative engagements are vital to building a more inclusive Wikimedia platform. I am enthusiastic about recreating this experience with other communities; please navigate to the last paragraph to know how to initiate such engagements.
On August 17, the spotlight was on the Apps Team at Wikimania as we presented "There’s an App for that: a mobile-native way to interact with the movement". We appreciate everyone who tuned in virtually to explore the future of interaction with the Wikimedia movement through our innovative mobile app. If you missed it or want to revisit the content, you can find the presentation slides at this link.
We're excited to share that Jazmin Tanner, the Apps Lead Product Manager, contributed to the session titled "Supporting Moderators at the Wikimedia Foundation." As we diligently worked on refining the patroller feature on the apps, Jazmin provided valuable insights that contributed to discussions on enhancing the experience for both moderators and users.

editFrom the end of August to October 2023
- The iOS suggested edits feature, originally successful on Android, is now being developed for iOS. This expansion aligns with the Product & Technology organization's goals for the 2023–2024 fiscal year, with a specific target of increasing mobile contributions by 10% without reversion. This move responds to the growing demand for a similar content creation and maintenance tool on Apple devices.
- The team released 7.4.1 in August, which included:
- The ability to Undo and Rollback edits on Diff Pages!
- The addition of Tachelhit Language Wiki.
- We also improved language variants for Chinese and Serbian languages.
- In October, 7.4.2 was released, which included the following:
- Watchlist on iOS: We've heard your requests! You can now access your Watchlist through Settings → Account → Watchlist. Add new items to your Watchlist via the new overflow menu in the Article View. Take actions on edits by clicking a username on the Watchlist view, or take actions like "Thank" on the diff screen of an edit in your list.
- Article Section Sharing: Want to send someone to a specific section in an article? Click a section in the table of contents and then click "Share" via the article overflow menu.
- Bug Fixes to ensure you can swipe without the app freezing and that the navigation bar doesn't shrink or disappear.
Thank you for volunteering developers Serguitar, jhsoby, agray, Nikki, TiagoLubiana.dijkstra.and revolter for their contributions to this release.

Wikimedia Apps newsletter – First quarter of 2024
editHello, and welcome to the app’s first newsletter in 2024!
It has been a long year; we published four editions of our newsletter, which you can go through all of them. In this edition, we will cover our work for the last quarter of 2023 and the first quarter of 2024!
Android
edit- Edit Patrol (also known as Patroller tasks on Android) has been released to Beta testers with rollback rights on Test Wiki and Indonesian Wikipedia. We had a productive meeting with Indonesian users to introduce and discuss the new patrolling tasks feature on the Android app, as we provided a detailed presentation on the feature, and collected valuable feedback from the Indonesian community to enhance the user experience.
For those interested, a meeting recording is available.
We conducted outreach to Spanish, and French Wikipedia communities during February 2024. - We hosted two synchronous community consultations & recorded a third where we shared the Edit Patrol suggested edit workflow, and showed designs for Saved messages and templates:
- Places feature is back to the Wikipedia Android app!
Places is a feature that allows you to discover articles by location.
The iOS app was able to maintain the feature via use of Apple Maps, but it was necessary for Android audiences that we continue using an open source map.
iOS
edit- Suggested Edits on iOS prototype is in the experimental build. Instructions to test the feature can be found on this FAQ page.
Alt text is text associated with an image that serves the same purpose and conveys the same essential information as the image.
The app's product manager presented our team's work and prototype (iOS suggested edits) to the GLAM conference audience. All details can be found in the presentation's deck. - It is now possible to donate using Apple Pay directly from the app.
- IOS Native Editor Improvement Development is out!
You will be able to edit, find and replace, and insert links and images directly from Commons without any performance issues!
Additionally, it is now possible to edit a full article page and a talk page.
In the current quarter, we aim to engage with editors from LATAM, Spanish-speaking regions, North America, and the Caribbean to test Suggested edits and the new native editor features.
Community meetings
edit- We participated in the GLAM conference in November 2023. All the details are mentioned in the iOS section of this edition from the newsletter.
- On December 1st of 2023, The Wikipedia Android team met with Indonesian users to introduce and discuss the new patrolling tasks feature on the Android app. The team provided a detailed presentation on the feature and collected valuable feedback. A meeting recording is available.
- We joined the Wiki Editoras Lx editathon on December 16th to gather feedback about an alt-text Suggested Edit task on iOS.
Attendees were generally positive about the prospect of the feature. Experienced editors thought it could be a good task for on-boarding new editors, but also a more casual way of contributing for new editors.
