Tool Labs/Collection of issues after Toolserver shutdown

Collection: Issues after Toolserver shutdown / Sammelstelle: Probleme nach Toolserver-Abschaltung

edit

Hi! We would like to provide an overview for everyone and see which tools are most wanted and what is not working properly.

If you miss any tools or have noticed any broken redirects or any other error messages, please fill in below! The Toolserver was a community project and Wikimedia Deutschland cannot maintain volunteers' tools in the long run. But as many tools use free licenses, you could become the new maintainer. If you are a tool developer or if you want to become one, you can use the list of most-missed tools to get an idea where to get started. We can help you to contact the person who first wrote the tool and find out if he or she is still active or agrees to handing over the project. We will also check the broken redirects and other errors.

Please note that the backups of the tools will only be available until end of August 2014.

Thank you all for your help!

Hallo!

Summary of the voting below

edit

Hi everyone,

thank you for participating and for all your feedback! The good news are, that, among the tools which got named very often: Dispenser's tools are back in service, though he quit Tool Labs; Overlordq's Whois will hopefully be migrated by their maintainers; Luxo's derivative has found new maintainers. Also some other tools got fixed or will be migrated. Thanks, this is much appreciated!

What's next? Where can you help?

  • As mentioned below, Steinsplitter and Bawolff still are looking for someone who would like to help them out with Luxo's derivative.
  • VVV's adminstats got 9 votes, followed by Holek's citigen and Nikola's SVG translate. So if you are interested in maintaining a tool and you don't prefer a specific one, these could be the tools to get started with. We can help you to contact the current maintainers to find out about the whereabouts of their tools.

Not migrated, nobody working on it (3 or more mentions)

edit
  • adminstats_vvv: 9 (there is a substitute that might work for may users)
  • Citegen by Holek: 5
  • SVG Translate by Nikola: 4, Jarry1250 is working on a fork already.

Will probably migrate or hasn't finished migration (3 or more mentions)

edit
  • derivative by luxo: 22 (Steinsplitter, Bawolff, help wanted)

Will migrate for sure (3 or more mentions)

edit
  • Merlbot by Merlissimo
  • the OSM projects
  • Overlordq/Whois: 7 (Overlordq promised to migrate, time issue)

Is on Tool Labs but not fully functional (3 or more mentions)

edit
  • Connectivity by Lvova et al.: 3

Please name the tool and, if possible, the name of the tool developer and the tool's old web address. Please add your signatures to vote until July 15th (IPs welcome).

Do not add the same tool more than once please! Just add your +1 if a tool has already been named! (as in "add your signature to vote...)

Loss of Reflinks tool (partly moved up here from bottom of page)

It seems that Reflinks, previously hosted on Toolserver, is no longer functioning. Reflinks is a tool essential for our mission to provide citations and enhance verifiability. It simplifies the job of populating references, yet the developer feels that the WMF is forcing him to abandon the tool. It's exactly cases like these that makes me wonder where I should be asking questions about the whys and the wherefores. Not only that, I'm extremely disappointed and slightly angry that this has happened, and would like to appeal to the powers that be to reconsider. --Ohconfucius (talk) 07:22, 1 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • Bring back reflinks!
Support --User:SecretName101 I support bringing back reflinks, it was a useful tool that should not have been removed. Either, there should have been a proper replacement or no removal at all. Many new users have difficulty creating proper links, and this tool helped them immesurably, and even experienced users utilized it to save time correcting articles with innumerable references needing corrections.   In progress merl is migrating. His tools are still working on Toolserver because he got in touch with WMDE about the amount of work needed for him to adapt the code for Tool Labs (incl. rewriting a formerly proprietary library). Partly, he was waiting for missing features in Tool Labs until very recently, too. So we agreed to give him just a bit more time to finish migration. (The same for OSM-related projects.) Hey Ijon and πr2! Thanks again for your offer! As you see above, luxo's tool is missed by lots of people. There are Steinsplitter and Bawolff who started to migrate it. Steinsplitter would appreciate help with security questions. (But didn't go into detail, yet.) Does one of you want to support him to get luxo's tool up and running? Where is the WHOIS tool?

edit

With the closure of toolserver, we were left without a WHOIS tool (only days after I replaced the previous, "account-expired" tool). There's dozens of tools at the wmflabs page, none is labeled clearly as "Whois" and I don't have time to check each and everyone of them. Which is the whois tool we could use for the "WHOIS" option at the bottom of the IP contributions page? Also, to whom it may concern: please consider maintaining some basic tools, like whois, global contribs, edit count etcetera, by WMF's developers as an integral/centralized part of the wiki sites function, to avoid having to look for these tools, especially in hours of need, again and again every time a developer account expires. Thanks - Badseed (talk) 23:10, 1 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Tried to contact overlordq about his/her missing tools. No answer yet though. Whois is licensed under GPLv3, so anyone could resurrect the tool. Silke WMDE (talk) 09:31, 2 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
This needs fixing as a matter of urgency. It is not just a tool in the toolbox of a few experienced editors. It is linked on the talk page and the history page of every single IP editor and they are all returning a 403 error. This is not quite as broken as the site could get but it is a pretty poor situation. I don't think the Foundation developers should be sitting around on their thumbs hoping that some volunteer will pick this up. SpinningSpark 16:39, 2 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The link was added by the admins of some wikis, and they can remove it just as easily. It is not there by default. πr2 (tc) 17:48, 2 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I know that, but removing the link to the tool and pretending it never existed is not really any kind of solution. The transfer of tools from Toolserver has been completely botched, relying entirely on the efforts of individual volunteers to get it done. There is stuff broken all over the wiki. This is not the only highly visible breakage; most of the tools in the RfA menu have stopped working. SpinningSpark 09:47, 3 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed, this is pretty useful/visible tool. Shame that it is now broken. Red Harvest (talk) 09:36, 4 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
For my personnal usage I switched from http://toolserver.org/~overlordq/cgi-bin/whois.cgi to http://www.ip-adress.com/whois/ followed by the IP, wich is not linked in tools.wmflabs --JackAttack (talk) 11:31, 4 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It's not identical but does http://tools.wmflabs.org/whois/208.80.155.131/lookup work for you? You can use http://tools.wmflabs.org/whois/208.80.155.131/redirect/ARIN for a direct result from ARIN and similarly for APNIC etc. I will be happy to have the place "/whois" on Tool Labs taken over by OverlordQ or someone else for a complete migration or a better tool. whym (talk) 10:29, 5 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
OverlordQ got back to us by now. He wrote in an email that he hasn't had time to migrate, yet, but he's got his backup and will hopefully set it up on Tool Labs soon. Silke WMDE (talk) 08:54, 7 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
