هدف نمایشگر رسانه بهبود تجربه مشاهده برای خوانندگان و ویرایشگران معمولی در سایت‌های ویکی‌پدیا و ویکی‌مدیا است.
این مرورگر چندرسانه‌ای تصاویر را در اندازهٔ بزرگتر با اطلاعات مفید در مورد محتویات، نویسندگان و فراداده‌های مرتبط نمایش می‌دهد. همچنین تعدادی از ویژگی‌ها را برای بزرگنمایی، اشتراک‌گذاری، بارگیری یا جاسازی فایل‌های رسانه ارائه می‌دهد که در زیر توضیح داده شده است.

چرا نمایشگر رسانه؟

نمایشگر رسانه برای خوانندگان و ویرایشگران معمولی، کاربران هدف اصلی این ابزار، ایجاد شده است. با گذشت زمان، این ویژگی‌ها می‌توانند آنها را تشویق کنند تا در پروژه‌های خواهر ویکی‌پدیا و ویکی‌مدیا مشارکت بیشتری داشته باشند.
نمایشگر رسانه چگونه کار می‌کند؟
برای باز کردن یک تصویر در نمایشگر رسانه، بر روی تصویر بندانگشتی آن در هر مقاله‌ای ، نگارخانه‌ای یا صفحه رده‌ای کلیک کنید. این کار تصویر را در نمایشگر رسانه به صورت بزرگ به اندازه پوشش تمام صفحه به نمایش می‌گذارد.
نمایشگر رسانه شماری از ویژگی‌های کاربردی را ارائه می‌کند:
- خواندن شرح تصویر و یا توضیحی پیرامون آن
- مرور مستقیم تصاویر مرتبط
- بزرگ کردن تصویر
- دیدن تصویر به صورت تمام صفحه
- درباره، نویسنده، منبع و مجوز بیشتر بدانید.
- در صفحه پرونده جزئیات بیشتری دریافت کنید یا اطلاعات را ویرایش کنید.
- اشتراک‌گذاری، جای‌گذاری یا بارگیری یک تصویر
- خروج از نمایشگر رسانه
- غیرفعال کردن (یا فعال کردن) نمایشگر رسانه
این ویژگی‌ها هر بار که برای باز کردن نمایشگر رسانه روی یک تصویر کوچک کلیک می‌کنید، تا زمانی که ابزار فعال باشد، در دسترس هستند. نمایشگر رسانه اکنون به طور پیش‌فرض در تمام سایت‌های ویکی‌مدیا فعال است، اما می‌تواند توسط هر کاربری غیرفعال شود، همانطور که در زیر توضیح داده شده است. از صفحه توضیحات پرونده، روی «باز کردن در نمایشگر رسانه» در زیر تصویر کلیک کنید تا با این ابزار آن را مشاهده کنید.

چگونه می‌توانم این ویژگی را خاموش کنم؟
برای غیرفعال کردن نمایشگر رسانه، روی نماد 'چرخ‌دنده' در گوشه سمت چپ بالای نمایشگر رسانه کلیک کنید (مشاهدهٔ نماگرفت). سپس بر روی «غیرفعال‌ساختن نمایشگر رسانه» کلیک کنید. از این پس، تصاویر دیگر در نمایشگر رسانه باز نمی‌شوند: با کلیک بر روی ریزعکس‌ها به صفحهٔ توضیحات پرونده در ویکی‌انبار یا مخزن پرونده دیگر می‌روید.
این ویژگی غیرفعال‌سازی برای کاربران ثبت‌نام شده (با استفاده از ترجیحات سایت)، و همچنین کاربران ثبت‌نام نشده یا «ناشناس» (با استفاده از پرونده‌ای که به صورت محلی در رایانه شما ذخیره شده است) کار می‌کند. توجه داشته باشید که این ویژگی غیرفعال‌ساختن فقط در سایتی کار می‌کند که آن را فعال می‌کنید: غیرفعال کردن نمایشگر رسانه در ویکی‌انبار آن را در ویکی‌پدیای خانگی یا سایر پروژه‌های خواهر غیرفعال نمی‌کند.
If you are a registered user, you can also disable Media Viewer in your "Preferences": select the "Appearance" section, and uncheck this option under "Files": '[ ] فعال کردن نمایشگر رسانه‌ای’. Once you click "Save", images will no longer open in Media Viewer for your account on that site.
Note that you can also bypass Media Viewer anytime, without disabling the tool. To quickly access the file description page, simply press one of these keys when clicking on a thumbnail:
- shift-click: open the file page in a new window
- command-click: open the file page in a new tab
- control-click: show a menu of options
چگونه می‌توانم این ویژگی را دوباره فعال کنم؟
If you change your mind and wish to re-enable Media Viewer, visit any file description page on the site where you wish to use this tool. Then click on the 'cogs' icon next to the "Open in Media Viewer" button below that image: this will open it in Media Viewer, with the Enable panel open (see screenshot). Now click on "Enable Media Viewer". This Enable feature works for registered users (using a site preference), as well as unregistered or 'anonymous' users (using a file stored locally on your computer).
Note that this Enable feature only works on the site where you activate it: enabling Media Viewer on Wikimedia Commons will not enable it on your home Wikipedia or other sister projects.

Note: Media Viewer only supports the most widely used image file formats on Wikimedia sites (e.g.: JPEG, GIF, PNG, TIFF, SVG). In future releases, we plan to add support for more file formats, such as PDF, audio and video files.

Media Viewer was developed by the Wikimedia Foundation's multimedia team from July 2013 to November 2014. It was designed in collaboration with community members, in a series of discussions held over video conferences, IRC, and face-to-face meetings. This tool was then developed and tested as a Beta Feature through April 2014, when it was gradually released worldwide, over a three-month period.
Media Viewer was tested extensively with millions of readers and casual editors, the primary target users for this tool. User feedback was collected through usability studies, community consultations and online surveys. Based on this feedback, a wide range of improvements were developed to make Media Viewer easier to use, such as: an easier way to enlarge images, image captions, a prominent link to the File: page and an easier way to disable the tool for personal use.
