Topic on Talk:Content translation

  1. I can assume that if an article appeals in Suggestions for that language pair -- French/English for example, there is no article in the target language on that topic?
  2. Apparently there is a backlog of ottoman empire articles needing translation from English to French. My interest is moderate...I have done a couple. But now all the suggestions I am getting are about the ottomans. How can I get it to show me something else?
  3. Alternately how can I identify articles needing translations some other way? Is there a list? I was browsing around an area I felt like working in earlier and even the very obscure subtopics were already translated, or at least existed in both languages.
  4. There really is no way of inserting special characters? The thing is, e with an accent and e without an accent are two completely different things in French; publishing an article with no accents, well, it makes my old spelling teacher roll over in her grave. I use an english keyboard and usually use the special character gadget when I I write in french on wikipedia...Fortunately fact that the talk page gets put in the translated is helpful for staving off deletionists, but I have had one short article deleted because I didn't fix all the formatting fast enough.
  5. It *is* still easier that translating without the wizard, though, and having everything on the same screen is helpful
  6. I am having trouble signing in again. Doesn't a universal account include media wiki? (Elinruby)

  1. Yes. Occasionally I see bugs when the article already does appear because something goes out of sync, however even if this does happen, you will see a warning about this when you start the translation.
  2. You can remove the suggestions about Ottomans by clicking the X, and if you translate something else, the algorithm will show you topics related to that. I am taggin @LZia (WMF) and @Pginer-WMF, who can add more information about this.
  3. At the moment you may try the GapFinder tool, which is also maintained by @LZia (WMF) (if I'm not mistaken). In the future there will be another tool for making more manually curated task lists (hopefully in a few months). See https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T96147
  4. I totally understand you. In the future Content Translation will re-use the same character insertion tool that the VisualEditor has, but this will take a few months. I will also try to make a ULS-based IME for French, and I'll let you know when it's ready. In the meantime I suggest the following options:
    1. Using an actual French keyboard layout that your operating system provides. All modern operating systems have at least one in the system's language settings.
    2. Using one of the "U.S. International" keyboards, which allow typing accents as dead keys.
    3. If you happen to use a Mac, long-pressing a letter shows options with accents.
  5. Thank you so much :)
  6. That's odd. All Wikimedia sites, including mediawiki.org are supposed to use the global account. Maybe @Legoktm will have an idea?

  1. It would be nice (I am full of feature requests, sorry) if translations removed themselves from the "in progress" list when done. I have seen that error message. Would the translation overwrite the existing article if I went forward?
  2. thanks. I did find a refresh button just now also, came here to tell you that and report a minor bug
  3. interesting
  4. yes, I do know this is a whine ;) I suppose I should do that. Switching back and forth between layouts is...well. I am not a mac user at this computer anyway but that is good to know.
  5. welcome
  6. I am not very worried about it. I may try signing out of everything and signing back in at some point. (Elinruby)

You don't have to be sorry about feature requests—we love them!

Translations are already supposed to remove themselves from the "in progress" list when done. However, if you change anything after publishing, they will stay there.

huh so if I have one that I is just hanging out how do I get rid of it? It's possible I changed something before I noticed it was already published; it's in my in-progress list. I have an option to dismiss; will that make the published article go away as well? (Elinruby)

Amire80 (talkcontribs)

No, it will only remove it from your dashboard.

The published article is just a usual wiki article like any other.

ok. I will let you know if this takes care of it. (elinruby)

gone from in progressilist, published translation exists. This question is answered and can be closed as far as I am concerned
