Talk:Developer account/Archive 1

Latest comment: 5 years ago by BDavis (WMF) in topic Can't create a wikitech account

I suggest this page become the new Commit access page, and that Commit access be moved to Commit access/Subversion until Subversion is fully read-only.

Reasons:

  1. The Project: namespace isn't really helpful in a wiki that has no "articles" as such. It's just one more thing to remember.
  2. We're pointing to commit access from lots of places, so let's make sure it carries the correct information.

(Alternatively, we could also rename Commit access to Developer access to be more generic.)

Done. I went with developer access since we're rolling several permissions into one process here.--Eloquence (talk) 17:16, 28 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
To be honest, the title makes me think its about shell access for some reason, I'm not sure why. Bawolff (talk) 14:20, 5 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Request fields

Shouldn't this page give users a field for their preferred shell name as well? We don't want to force "Joe Smith" to use Joe_Smith@ when they really want jsmith@.

The examples should be better. The example uses "Dogmaster3000" as the user's MW.org name and as the preferred name, when in reality the proper practice is not to match your wiki name but to use the name you want to use in user.name.

This also doesn't properly articulate the relationship between Labsconsole username, git user.name, and the real name practice and between gerrit shell, labs shell, and svn shell. We have people in #mediawiki confused about this. Daniel Friesen (Dantman) (talk) 22:14, 1 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

The example is fixed and the template is fixed. The relationship among those 5-6 different names, not addressed yet. Sumana Harihareswara, Wikimedia Foundation Volunteer Development Coordinator (talk) 21:56, 3 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

What does "shell username" mean? πr2 (tc) 20:51, 6 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

There was either an authentication database error or you are not allowed to update your external account.

I am not able to create first password, get this error after logging in with temporary pwd and trying to set up a new one.--Kozuch (talk) 15:14, 6 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

We're currently having some LDAP problems with labs, which is what's causing your error. It's being worked on, and should be restored shortly. ^demon (talk) 17:51, 6 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
Should be fixed now, let us know how it works (or not) for you. --Jeremyb (talk) 21:29, 6 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
Yes it works now. Thansk for help.--Kozuch (talk) 07:21, 7 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

i have this Message :There was either an authentication database error or you are not allowed to update your external account. thanks فلورانس (talk) 20:34, 19 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Probably a temporary problem somehow related to mailarchive:labs-l/2013-July/001422.html though it doesn't mention LDAP being affected? Try again and write to that mailing list if it doesn't work. --Nemo 07:17, 20 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Who can help resetting password on wikitech.wikimedia.org ?

I haven't used my wikitech.wikimedia.org account in a while and didn't contribute or log into Gerrit either. The password reset page doesn't work for me. Who would be the right person to contact for assistance? --Danwe (talk) 02:15, 1 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

If you manage to get a password reset email, have you tried entering simpler passwords (phabricator:T58114)? --Nemo 11:00, 1 October 2016 (UTC)Reply
I have not received an email. It might be that I have used my old WMDE email for that account from back when I was working for them - not sure. --Danwe (talk) 21:06, 1 October 2016 (UTC)Reply
If you still have shell access to any Labs machine you can lookup what email address is expected with ldapsearch -xLLL uid=$USER. If you do have ssh access, we can probably follow the procedure from Password_reset#Reset_two_factor_authentication where you create a text file in your $HOME on a Labs host requesting a reset of you password and/or email address. --BDavis (WMF) (talk) 21:26, 1 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

Developer access = LDAP user?

Is an developer access account equivalent to the "LDAP User" listed in your Phabricator profile? In this case a note should be added to the page, e.g. "You can obtain developer access (aka LDAP account) to two important tools in one go:" -- JakobVoss (talk) 10:32, 25 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

I just tried with my credentials, looks like it's the same. -- JakobVoss (talk) 10:57, 25 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
Yes, a "developer account" is an account in the LDAP directory that is shared by Wikimedia Cloud Services, Gerrit, Phabricator, and several other web interfaces on the Wikimedia production network. --BDavis (WMF) (talk) 23:00, 25 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

Proposing page rename and content update

I'd like to move this page to Developer account and update the content to match User:BDavis_(WMF)/Sandbox/Developer_account. We are trying to standardize on the "developer account" term following a discussion and consensus approval. Hopefully it will be more clear than the past mix of wikitech/LDAP/labs account naming. I would actually have already made the move per w:WP:BOLD, but apparently I don't have the proper rights to mess with translated pages. --BDavis (WMF) (talk) 21:14, 23 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

@AKlapper (WMF): do you have the rights needed to move translated pages? --BDavis (WMF) (talk) 16:54, 22 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
@BDavis (WMF): Nope: "The action you have requested is limited to users in the group Translation administrators." But https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T172943#3514126 seems to explain how to do it. Want to give it a shot? --AKlapper (WMF) (talk) 12:19, 29 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
I have boldly made the page move. Now I need to update the content to go with the new name. There will be quite a bit of cleanup of links to the old page name to be done as well. Help with that is very welcome. --BDavis (WMF) (talk) 21:19, 15 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

Can't create a wikitech account

I'd like to create a wikitech account but when I'm trying to access wikitech - Special:Create Account, I get:

Permission error

You do not have permission to do that, for the following reason:
You are not allowed to execute the action you have requested.

What am I doing wrong? נועם ימיני (talk) 09:30, 22 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

Oh, I asked in wikitech IRC channel, and someone told me that due to a bug, wikitech accounts creation is temporarily disabled.נועם ימיני (talk) 10:14, 22 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
Sorry about that confusion. I have set up a custom error message now that looks like:
"Developer account creation temporarily disabled. See wikitech-l for more information."
Hopefully this will not be a problem for much longer. --BDavis (WMF) (talk) 16:23, 22 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
Return to "Developer account/Archive 1" page.
