I'm a WMF staff member working on MediaWiki core. I have been an admin with my volunteer account for a long long time, see User:Duesentrieb. I'm planning to do documentation and cleanup work was part of my role on the core platform team. It would be useful if I could use my staff account to do things like delete leftover redirects, instead of having to switch accounts every time.
