Wiki Wrapper edit

Is there a way to pull a website into one of Wiki's window? More clearly, I'd like to use Wiki to overlay onto a webpage, kind of like Joomla or Mambo does with it's "wrappers". I want to keep the navigation of Wiki, but pull up an external website into one of Wiki's frames. Does this make sense? Is it possible?

Enabling "all" Mode in CategoryTree edit

Is there any drawback to enabling "all" mode in CategoryTree for this site as described here Extension:CategoryTree#Modes? It would allow pages to show up as leaves in a category tree as well as subcategories which would help with browsing large categories like Category:Extensions by hook usage. --Cneubauer 20:46, 6 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like you can already do this at Special:CategoryTree. --Cneubauer 16:50, 7 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Brief description of $wgNamespaceAliases edit

Hi. Recently I posted a question about accuracy of the description, which caused confusion in translation. What do you think about this? Mulukhiyya 10:31, 14 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I responded. Smaug 00:57, 25 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

MediaWiki: edits request edit

Could some sysop please make the following changes?

  • Change MediaWiki:Phpdoc/cs containing currently “Dokumenatce kódu” to “Dokumentace kódu” (just a typo).
  • Create MediaWiki:Site/cs containing “Tento web”
  • Create MediaWiki:Mailing lists/cs containing “E-mailové konference”.
  • Create MediaWiki:Bug tracker/cs containing “Sledování chyb”.
  • Fix MediaWiki:Sidebar so that “Download from SVN” is localizable, then change the corresponding MediaWiki: pages for /cs translation so that the link reads “Stažení ze SVN” and links to Download from SVN/cs.
  • Fix the sidebar once again, so that “Support desk” is localizable, then change the corresponding /cs translation page to “Žádost o podporu”.

Thanks, --Mormegil 10:44, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Special:Popularpages edit

I notice that MW.org doesn't have a Special:Popularpages page. Is this because the administrators specifically removed it for this wiki, or because it is removed from the software in 1.13? Smaug 00:52, 25 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It is disabled in all Wikimedia wikis, like all the features of the built-in hits counter. – rotemlissTalk 17:12, 3 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Delete history edit

Hello! Is there a way to delete the history of an article in my wiki? So often I change an article so longer will be the list of the versions. Isn't it space on my disc, if there are so many versions to an article in my wiki? So I want to delete the history time to time, but how? Thank you for your replies, Doc Taxon 05:20, 26 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You should ask this question in the Support Desk; this page is not the place to ask about the software. I think what you want is possible, though I do not know how either. Smaug 21:51, 26 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

PHPXref of MediaWiki edit

Hi, I used PHPXref on MediaWiki and put the results at http://tools.wikimedia.de/~erwin85/mediawiki. Might be interesting for you. --Erwin 22:55, 9 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Suggestions page edit

It seems to me that a single "Suggestions page" on this site would be useful. E.g. I was thinking it would be useful to redirect from pages ending in /, and make it impossible to create pages ending in a slash, but I wasn't sure the best place to put it. --Chriswaterguy 01:17, 29 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

What about the page we are on now? If not, howabout Project:Current_issues? Smaug   01:46, 29 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That sounds like a MW software request, rather than a site request, in which case it see Bugzilla for details about requesting enhancements. If not, and it was a site request, here is the right place to discuss it. (Current issues is for wider-reaching or ongoing concerns.) --HappyDog 14:36, 2 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Installation related pages edit

I recommend that Manual:Newcomers guide to installing on Windows, Manual:Simple Windows Apache Installation, and Manual:Streamlined Windows Install Guide be merged into one page. All the detail about specific versions of stuff should be pulled out. This would also prevent the instructions from going out of date every other month when a new version of something comes out. This new page and associated Windows installation pages should be renamed so the title describes the type of installation. For example, "...installing on Apache, PHP, and MySQL", "...installing on IIS and SQLServer", or "...installing on XAMPP". Manual:Simple Windows Apache Installation is probably the cleanest of these pages so we should start with it.

Also, the various pages associated with old versions of MediaWiki should be archived somehow or deleted. This includes Manual:Installing MediaWiki on Windows XP - MediaWiki 1.5, Manual:Installing MediaWiki on Windows XP - MediaWiki 1.7.1, and Manual:Installing MediaWiki on Windows XP - MediaWiki 1.9.2. --Cneubauer 18:58, 16 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Archived perhaps - not deleted. Some people may still be running older versions (e.g. for MySQL compatibility reasons) --HappyDog 20:05, 31 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Confirm edit edit

I would really like anonymous submissions on my wiki but the confirm edit extension suddenly stopped working. Editing toolbox edit

We have a rather incomplete editing toolbox. If we could port a piece of wikimarkup from another wiki like en.wp to MediaWiki:Edittools, it would probably prove useful. Any suggestions as to what code to include? --AnonDiss 09:52, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Requested articles? edit

Both Wikipedia and (English) Wiktionary have places where anybody can request an article to be added. Does MediaWiki.org have such a place?

At Wiktionary we're setting up a dev wiki to work on extensions etc and learning how to set up and use MediaWiki as we go. We just noticed that maintenance/runJobs.php doesn't have an article here - so I'd like to request one please. — Hippietrail 13:56, 12 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

User JS edit

Does this site enable user js? I'd like to write a script so that when I click on a link such as "Help:Navigation/vi", it will bring me to title=Help:Navigation/vi&action=edit&preload=Help:Navigation so that I can translate quicker. --Cumeo89 19:34, 18 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Babel equivalents? edit

Hi guys, does mw: have any equivalents of the Babel templates used in other sites (e.g. Wikipedia:en:Wikipedia:Babel) to put on your userpage? Thanks! It Is Me Here 13:02, 16 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No. But you can always add a simple note about language or programming abilities to your user page, of course :-) --:bdk: 23:00, 29 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, thanks. If there isn't a need within the community for people to know the languages you speak, then I won't include information about them. It Is Me Here 18:30, 8 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

MedaWiki namespace edit request edit

I’d like to ask a sysop to change MediaWiki:Common.js, so that the Main Page title hiding works in Czech (see the current version):

Change

var isViewingMainPage = (/^MediaWiki(\/.+ - MediaWiki)?$/.test(document.title));

to

var isViewingMainPage = (/^MediaWiki(\/.+)?$/.test(wgPageName));

(And, possibly, add && wgAction == "view" before the semicolon.)

Thanks.

P.S. Isn’t there some equivalent of {{Editprotected }}? (Or, how does one get sysop rights here?) --Mormegil 15:30, 12 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The number of junk pages edit

This site accumulates more junk pages that even Meta, which is much larger. It seems we have a constant flow of junk pages being created and deleted; see on Recentchanges for yourself. Is the message that is shown at the top of the page when someone clicks "create new page" not clear enough? Should we consider something more drastic to prevent this huge flow? This seems to be a chronic problem that occupies a great amount of admin time, and I think we should look at ways to deal with it. —Anonymous DissidentTalk 08:12, 17 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

ExtensionDistributor edit

It seems we have lost the ExtensionDistributor extension here on mediawiki.org – see missing Special:ExtensionDistributor. --Mormegil 09:43, 23 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

DPL for Extension Matrix (again!) edit

I would like to propose that DynamicPageList (DPL for short) be installed on this wiki in order to keep the Extension Matrix updated. This topic has been broached at least twice before, both times in 2007; once was on the forum here, once was on Extension Matrix's talk page. It sounds like the idea may have been dismissed due to server load concerns. It then became moot when DuesenBot started keeping the matrix updated nightly.

DuesenBot has apparently been AWOL for months now, having last updated the Extension Matrix on 11 June 2008. However, DPL now has a parameter allowcachedresults that can help to reduce server strain (and page load time) by allowing the wiki to cache the DPL query's results. Thus, DPL might now be more feasible in terms of server resources, especially in light of the fact that the Extension Matrix is no longer receiving the bot-driven updates that it once benefited from. -- Zawersh 03:56, 16 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Italian version to be amended edit

Sorry for being so picky, but the Italian version of the fundraising banner quotes Wikipedia as a "no-profit" organization i.o. a "NON-profit" organization". Thanks, Guido 6 November 2008

Thanks, this was already noted on Meta and has been fixed in the meantime. Generally please report such issues directly on Meta-Wiki, see meta:Fundraising 2008/core messages. --:bdk: 19:46, 12 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Special:RecentChanges - time to first position edit

How about moving time info in each row at Special:RecentChanges to first position?

  • the list groups entries by date, so the next logical thing is time
  • time has constant lenght, having constant length values before variable length values makes the list more hamonious/ easier to read (more like a table)

TechControl 04:02, 9 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure what you mean. In my RC list, the time is at the start of each row. --Swift 14:21, 9 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
