What goes around comes around

Could using dofollow help one's pagerank indirectly? E.g. suppose you link to site A, boosting its pagerank. That drives traffic to site A, raising awareness of sites B and C that are linked to on site A. Site C then links to your wiki, and boosts its pagerank. It's a plausible scenario, isn't it, if the sites cover the same subject matter or there is some other association between them? Leucosticte (talk) 07:00, 6 December 2013 (UTC)

It seems unlikely/uncommon to me that the majority of sites linked from any wiki links back to the wiki itself, so you would be more likely to dilute the value of your outgoing links and hence reduce the pagerank coming to/from those actually connected to you. If a site is part of a network with your wiki, in any sense, you should add it to your interwiki map or nofollow exceptions. --Nemo 15:43, 7 December 2013 (UTC)

Are you saying that it would dilute the value because some of the links would become spammy, or there would be no differentiation between the interwiki (non-spammy) and external (possibly spammy) links? $wgNoFollowDomainExceptions isn't accessible for people without FTP or shell access to change. grep follow *.php and grep Follow *.php turned up nothing relevant in the extensions/SpamBlacklist folder, so I guess whitelisted items don't have nofollow applied either.

I would think that a situation might arise in which your wiki links to someone's obscure blog, they google themselves and find the article linking to them, they get curious about your wiki and surf around it, and then they post an article to their blog that links to your wiki. Hi, I believe this should be fixed now in Special:Diff/6247290; I replaced it with the most recent archived version from the Internet Archive (March 6, 2022). SamanthaNguyen (talk) 23:01, 6 December 2023 (UTC)
