Need some help edit

Hurrah! You've already got a script I can try out!

I added it to my common.js on en.wp and refreshed, but I can't find any new buttons. Have you tried this in Firefox yet? Or maybe I'm overlooking something obvious? Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 00:39, 11 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Whatamidoing (WMF): How odd; it in fact doesn't show up in Firefox! I've only tested it in Chrome (will be in the "insert" menu there). I'll have a look, thanks for letting me know! Mvolz (talk) 10:15, 11 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
Whatamidoing (WMF): Nevermind, it does work in FF for me, I was just logged out :P. I moved the dialog from the "insert" menu into the "Cite" menu since that seems like a logical place for it ("Cite by URL"); but be forewarned that unlike the other cite dialogs, it doesn't put the citation inside <ref></ref>. So if you want to actually make use of it, you'll have to switch to wikitext editing mode and put the ref tags in manually. Hopefully I'll fix that soon!
It's there! However, it says that the citoid server is down at the moment.
Have you settled on a database for ISBNs? I understand that OCLC/WorldCat is a good choice. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 17:31, 11 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
User:Whatamidoing (WMF) Ok. Server is back up. It inserts the citations into the ref tags now, but there's sometimes a bug where the reference list doesn't get updated in real time; should still work when you save the page, but I haven't pinned it down yet since it's occasional. Yeah, we've basically settled on OCLC; mwalker is working on the contract with them now I think! If the server crashes again and you want to submit a manual bug support again here, feel free :) I need better logging... Mvolz (talk) 18:40, 11 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
Is it not enabled for subpage/sandbox testing? I can see it when I edit w:en:User:WhatamIdoing but not when I edit w:en:User:WhatamIdoing/Sandbox.
Also, the server's down again. (It's okay; I'm not in any rush. I just thought you'd need to know.  :-) Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 21:22, 11 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
Whatamidoing (WMF) Hmm. Works fine in my sandbox? Is is possible your JS is cached? It's pretty buggy obviously but Ctrl shift R clears it. Also the server is actually up this time so it might be something else that's causing failure :(. Mvolz (talk) 21:53, 11 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
P.S. Thanks for testing this is really helpful :) Mvolz (talk) 21:53, 11 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
It could be a caching problem (I'm willing to believe anything inconvenient about Firefox!). I've got the menu item displaying now (yay!) and can get the window open (yay!), but the server claims to still be down when I click the "Search" button. I'll try again later. (You haven't blacklisted http://google.com/ for testing, right?)
BTW, I'm over here at mw.org a couple of times a week, but if you ever need me and don't want to wait, then feel free to send me e-mail or stop by the English Wikipedia to find me. I'm totally excited about your project. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 22:04, 11 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
Yup, definitely a firefox thing, should have actually tested it in FF again after I confirmed the button was there! I'll have a look tomorrow. We'll get there! Mvolz (talk) 22:16, 11 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, Whatamidoing (WMF)! FYI, I fixed the firefox bug (it was blocking it because en wiki is https but I was using http to make calls to the citoid server). Now when you see that message it *actually* means the server is down. Which it probably will be a lot. I'm working on making it more stable. Mvolz (talk) 16:47, 12 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

News edit

I don't know if you've thought this far ahead, but I think you might like looking at w:en:User:Ark25/RefScript for some ideas about how people have tried to autofill the "cite news" templates. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 21:30, 11 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, I'll check it out! Mvolz (talk) 21:54, 11 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

A barnstar for you! edit

  The Citation Barnstar
You are totally awesome. I'm completely amazed. I just pasted in http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8566028 and your tool instantly gave me this fully formatted {{citation}} template back. I love it. Thank you! WhatamIdoing (talk) 21:13, 13 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Bug 69482 edit

Hi Marielle,

I wanted to make sure that you knew about bug 69482, just in case it wasn't already reaching you automatically. Template content needs to be sanitized to avoid problems with web page titles that use the pipe as decoration or separators. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 17:45, 13 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Thanks! No, I didn't know about it. Mvolz (talk) 11:04, 15 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

ISSN edit

I don't know if you can do anything about this, but this edit produced a warning about the ISSN. WhatamIdoing (talk) 05:10, 15 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hmm, looks like the scraper is returning multiple ISSNs, which it shouldn't do... I'll look into it, thanks! Mvolz (talk) 11:04, 15 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Oh, no! edit

I really don't like the kind of language you used in your latest weekly report. How about I replace the very distressing words "Final Report" with the much more friendly "Report #16 out of 600"? It would really work much better for me.  ;-) Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 22:08, 18 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hoorah! I'm glad that you're back. Congrats on the first community-based patch, too. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 22:07, 21 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

citoidWikitext with enhanced GUI and more features edit

Hi, you’re cordially invited to play with w:en:User:PerfektesChaos/js/citoidWikitext.

  • As a playing ground, please use w:de:WP:Sandbox – currently only templates in German are implemented for output.

Greetings --PerfektesChaos (talk) 18:40, 13 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

@PerfektesChaos: Wow, very cool! One minor thing: https://citoid.wikimedia.org/url is deprecated, should be using https://citoid.wikimedia.org/api. They largely produce the same results now, but we don't have tests for /url so in that sense, is definitionally less stable. And may be gone soon :). It shouldn't be a big change, it's just GET instead of POST and search instead of url for the parameter.

Thank you for your kind admiration.
The /api issue is part of the productive release now.
See you later on phabricator --PerfektesChaos (talk) 08:36, 16 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

Towards a New Wikimania results edit

Last December, I invited you to share your views on the value of Wikimedia conferences and the planning process of Wikimania. We have completed analysis of these results and have prepared this report summarizing your feedback and important changes for Wikimania starting in 2018 as an experiment. Feedback and comments are welcome at the discussion page. Thank you so much for your participation. I JethroBT (WMF), Community Resources, 22:47, 8 February 2016 (UTC)Reply
