Since you seem to be an active admin right now, could I ask you to block User:Sunstar NW XP? he's a known sock of User:Sunholm who is, essentially, banned across all wikis for constant disruption. He is currently blocked on several wikis, and makes claims on others (such as here) that those accounts on other wikis are not his (despite the single login). WhosOnline $wgDBPrefix

CentralNotice Edits

Am a bit curious about why you removed a lot of the detail from the CentralNotice extension page. The majority of the detail I had was due to actual questions being asked relative to those topics. Do you mean this edit? I fixed a typo (central-auth -> CentralNotice), fixed Trevor's username and removed excess spacing (i.e. == Design == → ==Design==) because it's relatively pointless - output is a <h2> in both cases. :) I'm quite sure that I didn't remove any actual information - at least not intentionally. Running a Script

Hi, I don't think that your English is that broken at all. :-)

Anyway, do you have access to phpMyAdmin? If so, to create the tables, you'd just need to copy the SQL code from systemgifts.sql, user_board.sql, usergifts.sqluser_profile.sql, user_relationship.sql and user_stats.sql to your phpMyAdmin's SQL query prompt. You will also need to replace /* $wgDBprefix */ with the value of $wgDBprefix if it's not null.

Replace SocialProfile Avatars

well I am interested in using this extension called 'socialprofile' because it seems really great but is there a way to replace 'avatar' with another word like 'photo' for example. for instance, can i make it so that on the user profile page it show 'upload picture' instead of 'upload avatar' - do i have to edit more than its worth to do this or is there a a quick and easy way? thanks for you time- Gordon Mac 1 16:56, 12 May 2009 (UTC)

The avatars folder should be in your wiki's $wgUploadDirectory (which, by default, is the images folder). Make sure that file permissions are set correctly - webserver user (apache/nobody/www-data/whatever it's called in your OS) needs to be able to write to avatars directory.

What's the deal with friending? It should work if you're logged in to the wiki and $wgFriendingEnabled is set to true (it is by default on SocialProfile.php). First of all, do not set $wgUploadDirectory (or if you do, set it to a proper value — it's supposed to be a string and not a boolean).

The friending problem sounds like an AJAX issue to me. Do you happen to use Firefox as your web browser? If so, I'd recommend getting the Firebug plugin for Firefox (unless you have it already) and checking what the POSTed AJAX request returns — if anything at all.

Blank page is a rather common problem. If possible, you should check your webserver's and PHP's error logs to see what might be causing it. --Jack Phoenix _(Contact) 15:52, 20 May 2009 (UTC)

The 195 there is the value of $wgStyleVersion, MediaWiki's "cache buster" variable. :)

Anyway, you seem to be having some path issues there. SocialProfile attemps to include http://www.tamileelamonline.com/en/extensions/SocialProfile/YUI/yui.js but that URL seems to be taking to a wiki page called "Extensions/SocialProfile/YUI/yui.js". Same goes for the file SocialProfile/UserProfile/UserProfilePage.js. Adjusting the value of $wgUserProfileScripts might fix the issue with UserProfilePage.js, but it won't fix YUI though, because YUI.php always tries to include the file $wgScriptPath/extensions/SocialProfile/YUI/yui.js.

What Can I say...

Social Profile works! I am so stupid. When I uploaded it using FileZilla, I didn't check the files. The files for example: filename.js were uploaded as filename.js.txt. When I changed it, it worked like a charm. But there is one problem, I can't upload images. How do I make the image folder writeable? In the Avatar folder, two files appeared: Archive and thumb, automatically. Sachein 10:12, 24 May 2009 (UTC)

My avatars folder has the permissions drwxrwx--- (this is on a Ubuntu box) and it works well. Assuming you're using a Unix box, you could try using the chown and chmod commands to change folder owner and permissions, respectively. chown -hR www-data:www-data avatars has worked for me (my webserver user is called 'www-data').

I really don't know why Special:AllMessages breaks, but I've definitely seen and experienced it in the past. I have a wiki running the newest version of SocialProfile and the issue isn't present there, so I really can't help you. It could be related to PHP's memory_limit setting though. MediaWiki requires at least 20M of memory, sometimes even more and Special:AllMessages is one of the most server-intensive special pages that there is. --Jack Phoenix _(Contact) 11:48, 24 May 2009 (UTC)

You're absolutely correct, Special:InviteEmail is provided by InviteContacts extension, which is separate from SocialProfile. It is also a Wikia extension and I might consider fixing it in the future; it's not very high on my to-do list though. Social Profile is like a temptation.

In my LocalSetting this is what it has:

What do you use for image thumbnailing, GD or something else than ImageMagick? Because if you use ImageMagick, $wgUseImageMagick and $wgImageMagickConvertCommand probably shouldn't be commented out there. Foeing is quite hard to disable without hacking the source code IIRC. Make sure that the folders have proper permissions and that your webserver user can read (&write) to them. I'm afraid that's all I can say about this; I've never had any bigger issues regarding avatars and awards and I've installed SocialProfile on quite a few (Linux) boxes. --Jack Phoenix _(Contact) 19:30, 3 June 2009 (UTC)

'</a>'; to something like $output .= '<a href="' . $user_link->escapeFullURL() . '" rel="nofollow">' . $avatar->getAvatarURL() . '<br />' . $user_name . '</a>'; ? wow this seems to be working just fine except for one little detail: the username function places the username on the right side of the img. even with the line break for some reason the username is still in the same line as the img. im going to keep working on this. thanks for the help if you have anymore ideas i will see if i can get it working. FCKeditor

I have updated Extension:FCKeditor_(Official), trying to sort out old, pre-1.16 and current code. I believe the new version for 1.16 DOES come with the FCKeditor itself. Please check my revision of the extension documentation whether it is now correct. (In our case, installation first did not work because inside a mediawiki extension/FCKeditor checkout I had a manual fckeditor checkout; it worked after deleting the entire extension/FCKeditor and checking out fresh. Uncertain of course, whether other things were wrong as well.)

Furthermore: Is the Extension:FCKeditor (Official) the version that is talked about here and here? If not where is it? The developer meeting notes: "Templates are shown as placeholders so it is not full WYSIWYG. When clicking on a template placeholder, you see a preview of the template and have the option of editing the templates parameters. Reference tags and signatures are also shown as placeholders." I cannot find an "option of editing the templates parameters". If Extension:FCKeditor (Official) is not the wikia version, where can that version be found?

The placeholder symbols are currently preventing us to use the extension. Any template information is uniformly hidden in a cryptic "T" symbol. This breaks the use case of making editing simpler to new users - they are very likely to either go away, or simply delete such extraneous symbols. And users understanding this are still unable to use it, because they are not even informed which "placeholder" is what.

Our ideal would be, instead of new cryptic placeholders, to put wiki-text areas into the FCK-functionality. That is, whenever an html comment, template etc. is encountered, the editor displays inline something like <wikitext><!-- a comment --></wikitext> or <wikitext>{{Template1 | x = 3 | y = 4 }}</wikitext>. Ideally this would be editable. This would fullfill the advanced user use-case (users who understand templates, but are still bothered by hand-editing e.g. tables) as well as the newcomer use case (the wikiformat would signal: there is substantial information here, do not delete it, do not be confused because the rest makes no sense).

Current trunk version of FCKeditor (the one from svn.wikimedia.org) comes with FCKeditor (the actual editor). However, the FCKeditor extension available on svn.wikimedia.org is not the Wikia version but rather the one written by FCKeditor team (and with patches from the community). Wikia's version can be found on their SVN. As much as I myself like it, it just doesn't seem to be working. It uses a fair bunch of YUI JavaScript functions and Wikia-specific PHP functions plus it requires a lot of core hacks (that, at least on my test environment, messed up my MediaWiki). You could try checking out the newest copy of Wikia software and then grepping for wgWysiwygParserEnabled to see what parts of MW core they've hacked. --Jack Phoenix _(Contact) 14:24, 7 June 2009 (UTC)

SocialProfile 1.3 / MW 1.4 - lots of undefined variables

Hey there, I have installed SocialProfile 1.3 into MW 1.4. Install was straight forward, but using the special pages returns lots and lots of notices about undefined variables. Are you able to assist? I posted all of the notices and their special pages I could find over here. Hi Ganiman, I hope you meant MW 1.14 as 1.4 is rather old and probably no modern extension works under that. ;-) Heh, that being said, your problem is that you're using an old version of SocialProfile instead of trunk version. These notices shouldn't be present in the current trunk version of SocialProfile (1.4). For example, notices regarding Special:TopAwards were fixed in r49174 (I later partially reverted that revision, but those bugfixes weren't reverted). The only E_NOTICEs that should be present in trunk are the notice about $birthday_date on Special:UpdateProfile, notice about $per_page and $page in Special:GiftManager and the one regarding $last_level variable on Special:TopUsers.

That being said, I'll try to get those fixed in future releases of SocialProfile, but they aren't the highest priority regarding SocialProfile — they're just notices after all, not warnings. --Jack Phoenix _(Contact) 10:03, 26 June 2009 (UTC)

Thanks Jack. It finally dawned on me to check for a conflicting extension, and a quick grep of my extension folder revealed another extension which had altered error_reporting(). I've got all the notices cleaned up now, but I'm having an issue uploading avatars and gifts. The extension doesn't seem to be creating a temporary image in /tmp, and when it tries to copy it from /tmp to the avatar or gift folders it errors out. Permissions are set properly (if they weren't, you would get a warning saying wgupload isn't writeable instead). I'm not sure what the extension uses to handle uploads or resizing. --Ganiman 13:03, 26 June 2009 (UTC)

Search function doesn't work in social profile

I was searching for text which was in the social profile fields. Even with a search in the profile namespaces and all namespaces it didn't pop up. Same thing on the example site (Halopedia): any text in the fields of the social profile will not be found by the search engine. Can you help me out, because this is a showstopper for my use: a social profile that cannot be found.- Bert

Why is the "warning" line referring to a directory called "Collection"? Download the extension, put the files in $IP/extensions/AjaxLogin and then add require_once("$IP/extensions/AjaxLogin/AjaxLogin.php"); to your wiki's LocalSettings.php. SocialProfile already supports many languages. Please note that some texts are shown in content language instead of your preferred language. Interface language can be changed through Special:Preferences, as always. SocialProfile pages, like Special:UpdateProfile, mostly use the user's interface language (i.e. if site language is French but user's language is English, the pages are shown in English), with some exceptions. --Jack Phoenix _(Contact) 11:29, 16 October 2009 (UTC)

Jack, problem solved. The problem is that Mediawiki works with the GD-lib. Installed ImageMagick and escaped in LocalStetings: $wgUseImageMagick = true; $wgImageMagickConvertCommand = "/usr/bin/convert";

Social Profile

I am attempting to place your extension into my wiki. I am a semi-retired hobo (freight hopper) w/out a programming background. Blog: [2] Forum: [3] and the mediawiki: [4] We want to use the wiki for our in-house storage of all things railroad so to speak. So, I have loaded everything and when I put the stuff in the local settings it gave me a statement that it couldn't read the socialprofile.php. I clicked on the file and the msg said something about no maintenance? I found the install.php and I guess I don't know how to do the command line thing. I have a private host w/cpanel and all kinds of bells and whistles, but they are greek to me. Is your wiki hosted on a *nix box? If so, check that your webserver user can access the SocialProfile folder and its files.

You will need to create some new tables in your database for SocialProfile. install.php script does this, but you don't have to use it: you can use phpMyAdmin instead. Log in to phpMyAdmin, select your database name from the right-hand menu, select the "SQL" tab and paste the contents of these files into the textbox: SystemGifts/systemgifts.sql, UserBoard/user_board.sql, UserGifts/usergifts.sql, UserProfile/user_profile.sql, UserRelationship/user_relationship.sql, UserStats/user_stats.sql and UserSystemMessages/user_system_messages.sql. Press the button and the tables will be created.

Now you should modify your wiki's LocalSettings.php, as explained here and configure some settings.

Special:SMWAdmin is a special page specific to Semantic MediaWiki extension, it has nothing to do with SocialProfile extension.

As I said before, you need to use phpMyAdmin (or something similar) to create the required tables in the database. You will also need to replace /* $wgDBprefix */ with the value of $wgDBprefix configuration variable (for you, $wgDBprefix seems to be mw_). I've described the procedure earlier; see there for instructions and maybe ask your host for more help, I'd assume that they can help with things like this. --Jack Phoenix _(Contact) 21:01, 10 November 2009 (UTC)

I set the tables up in myPHPAdmin via Run SQL querry from my cPanel. Files: system gift InnoDB 48k, user board MYISAM 1k, gift InnoDB 48k, profile MYISAM 1k, user relationship MYISAM 1k, user relationship reqeust MYISAM 1k, user stats MYISAM 1k, system gift InnoDB 48k, user system messages InnoDB 32k. Even loaded a fresh upload (that was the only way to get the final database file as it is only in the trunk version) and still get the same error message when I click my name. I am waiting for a reply from my host to run the install.php

FCKeditor

Hi, I've tried to use extension FCKeditor on my wiki Wiki-Brest. I have some problems with pages which have "..." (quotes symboles) in the article's name. In preview the link become red, because the extention transform it in noexist.

SocialProfile avatars + Imagemagick conflict

Hi Jack,

I am using the SocialProfile extension on my MW 1.15 and am having problems with the avatars.

For some reason it does not like the fact that the avatars are animated, and causes them to glitch and flicker when displaying them. However static images work fine.

The strange thing is that the same images are fine when uploaded directly to the wiki, and it's only when they are uploaded as avatars that this occurs. Even though they are both being rendered with Imagemagik.

I assume that you're using the 1.15-compatible version of SocialProfile (can't verify, because your Special:Version tells me to log in). Well, don't. Instead upgrade your MediaWiki to 1.16 and your SocialProfile to version 1.5. In the past, Special:UploadAvatar was quite a hack, but Bryan rewrote that special page for 1.16. I can't say for sure whether that fixes your problem (or not), though, as it's quite an odd one. I myself have had various issues with avatars in the past, but I've never seen the problem you have in my wikis. If upgrading doesn't solve the problem, I suggest that you file a bug in MediaWiki's Bugzilla. --Jack Phoenix _(Contact) 14:56, 14 August 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for getting back to me Jack. Yes, I am using the 1.15 branch with my 1.15 MW. So that is all good. Unfortunately I can't upgrade atm, because I have too many custom extensions that I have had coded for me. And it would be a very big undertaking to update them all. Since posting here I have also asked about this problem on the MW IRC, and they have suggested to me that it may have something to do with -coalesce (Although I have no idea what that actually means)? Custom extensions are hardly a valid reason not to upgrade. If you have the space, create a new wiki (like beta.smileypedia.org or test.smileypedia.org), untar 1.16 release there, copy your custom extensions over there, test and fix them as appropriate. It may even be that you don't need to change anything (admittedly, that's not very likely, but it can still happen).

-coalesce is an ImageMagick option. Maybe passing that to ImageMagick when converting a .gif file would fix the issue your site is having? Try changing line 265 of extensions/SocialProfile/UserProfile/SpecialUploadAvatar.php from:

Hi Castelobranco, unfortunately SocialProfile does not (yet) work with PostgreSQL, as I'm not familiar with non-MySQL DBMS and nobody's developed the PostgreSQL schema for SocialProfile yet. You can file a bug about this on MediaWiki's Bugzilla; as far as I'm concerned, we don't have too many PostgreSQL experts (Greg, iAlex and Q come to mind). What do you mean exactly? Trevor Parscal updated the "powered by MediaWiki" icon in r76120, so MediaWiki 1.17 will ship with this new icon, just like the current development version (1.18alpha) of MediaWiki. At least the MySQL daemon is broken, but the tech team suspects that it's not the only thing. Our techs are trying to find out what needs to be repaired and how to repair everything that's broken, but it's quite a time-consuming process, sadly. When shoutwiki comes back.

Hi Jack Phoenix! I have a question. When shoutwiki comes back, is it possible for the staff (You) to make a global sort of "Helper" group or to make wiki adoptions for wikis that are inactive. Testwiki

Hello Jack Phoenix.

I noticed that your rights (sysop and 'crat) given on 2009 on testwiki have never been used. Do you really need them ?

Personally it doesn't hurt me at all, but the testwiki policy says "Sysop rights are removed from every account that has not performed at least 1 log action within a time period of 6 months.". But I prefer asking users to know if they really don't need it before removing. So you want to keep it ? -- Quentinv57 18:27, 30 April 2011 (UTC)

Disable avatars on SocialProfile possible?

Hi. I think this extension is lovely and would like to have it on my wiki. But sadly I can't get avatar uploads enabled and I don't think I could do it in a few days. So I just guessed that maybe could I somehow disable avatars for the moment to have the extension working right now and try to solve the problem in a long period of time? Firstly, I think that this question would've been more appropriate in the extension's talk page — that way more people will see it.

Anyway, it really isn't possible to disable the avatar uploading function; there isn't a $wg global or anything to do that. You can simply not use it, although the proper fix to the issue is to resolve any and all problems that there are that have an impact on avatar uploads.

The most common issue with avatar uploading is permissions — the webserver should be able to write to and read from $IP/avatars and its subdirectories. If that doesn't help, take a look at the archived discussions on SocialProfile's talk page and see if they're of any use to you. --Jack Phoenix _(Contact) 07:06, 3 July 2011 (UTC)

We are working on securing your data and making sure nothing gets lost. This is an annoying and a difficult situation, because even I don't have all the bits and pieces of information that I'd need. We're doing our best with the limited resources (including time, peoples' availabilities, hardware, etc.) we have, but when there's nothing to report, we won't report anything back to you.
