Hackathon program: call for proposals open until May 9th

Hello all,

The Wikimedia hackathon is coming up in a few weeks, on May 22-23! We’re very excited to gather online with you all and hack together.

On top of the informal hacking, we would like to build a light, community powered program, with sessions and discussions about the technical environment in the Wikimedia movement. We will have two different “tracks”, each of them having its own setup:

  1. The main track, a livestream of sessions that will be recorded and available for replay, hopefully using a fully open source set up. This will be great for presentations, talks and demos.
  2. The open rooms: two Jitsi rooms will be available to schedule your sessions. This is perfect for informal discussions, Q&As and workshops.

If you’re interested in running a session in the hackathon’s program, it’s easy: please create a task on the Phabricator board, using this template, that will give you all the required information. The coordination team will come back to you to help you prepare and schedule your session.

You will also find the different formats that we are offering: presentation, discussion, workshop or lightning talk. All topics are welcome, as long as they are connected to the technical environment of the Wikimedia projects. We are particularly interested in sessions that are useful for newcomers, and connected to the main topics of this year’s hackathon: open source tools for events, documentation and finding co-maintainers.

Because we will need some time to schedule the proposed sessions and to make technical tests with the speakers, please note that the deadline to submit a session for the main track is May 9th. For the open rooms, you will have a bit more time, until May 19th.

You will find more information and details about the call for proposals on the how-to page. If you have any questions, feel free to ask as a reply to this thread. If you want to brainstorm ideas or find a co-speaker for your session, feel free to ask the crowd on the hackathon social channels.

Feel free to share the word anywhere you find it useful, and talk about it with your contacts! Thanks in advance,

For the coordination team, Léa

Hello all,

As a reminder, the Wikimedia hackathon is coming soon, on May 22-23!

We collected plenty of great proposals for the main track. You still have a few more days, until May 19th, to propose a session in one of the hacking rooms: More details here.

The schedule will be added on wiki in a few days, we will keep you updated. In the meantime, you can also add yourself in the participants list, or create tickets for your projects and ideas on the Phabricator board, in the "projects" column.

If you have questions, feel free to reach out to the coordination team on this talk page.

Hello all,

The Wikimedia Hackathon is taking place right now, and you can still join us spontaneously!

First of all, we are happy to present our online venue, a spatialized chat where you can walk around, spontaneously interact with other participants, and discover the various surprises or the map that we designed specially for the hackathon. You can find more information here, and join us at any time to work on your projects or just socialize with other Wikimedians.

During the hackathon, we have a schedule of sessions running: the second day is now over, and you can watch the main track in replay here. On Sunday, more sessions will take place in the hacking rooms, you can still join or even schedule your own discussions.

If you would like to work on a project, have a look at the Phabricator board, where you can create new tasks or join existing projects.

Finally, a showcase will take place Sunday at 14:00 UTC. If you are working on a project, feel free to add it in the related Etherpad. You are also welcome to watch the presentations.

As usual, for questions, feel free to use the talk page or our social channels.

Have a great time at the hackathon,

For the coordination team, Léa

Scheduling, 11:00 UTC on Saturday

It seems to me like "Ask anything about Phabricator", aklapper's Sunday 11:00 UTC session, may have audience overlap with the two "main track" sessions, daniel's and lucamauri's. Should/could anything be done about that?

Lea Lacroix (WMDE) (talkcontribs)

Hello, and thanks for sharing your concern. The sessions of the main track will be recorded, which means that people who want to attend the sessions in the hacking rooms can catch up afterwards.

And the other way round, you can also always bring up questions about Phab on Talk:Phabricator/Help at any time. :)
