Use this page to answer questions from this survey which will guide future work on the Android app. This survey will be important for how the Wikipedia Android app looks in the future.

Which of the three variants do you prefer to go to an article talk page?

At the moment to find the link to the talk page I have to scroll to the bottom of the page, which is painful. I like both variants A and B, and both could be supplied at the same time! Variant C copies the Desktop model. It is very uncommon to have multiple tabs this way in an app. Final thought: apps are for people not able to navigate in a browser, and IMHO (nearly) all app functionality can be supplied with a (mobile) webpage. The reason that I don't use the app is that it doesn't offer all the functionality of the Desktop version (and it is painful to scroll down to a webpage to switch to Desktop version).

Hi @Ad Huikeshoven! Thanks for this very helpful feedback its much appreciated. We are awaiting approval from the legal department to launch an in-app form that will hopefully make responding less painful. Once we have the go ahead, we will launch the mobile friendly survey form. In the interim, we have created a button that auto creates a new section where you can respond to the questions if you have an interest in providing feedback to some of the other questions there.

Equally thanks for your feedback of why you don't use the apps currently. Our goal is to be mobile first and not necessarily replicate everything in Desktop but still allow mobile only and mobile first users to fully participate in our projects, in ways that make sense for mobile users. Eventually there may be functionality completely unique to the apps, but we always prioritize not disrupting the workflows of contributors on other platforms. We don't see the apps as a "replacement", rather a supplement. I encourage you to check out the app strategy over on the design style guide.

Thank you again for providing your feedback, it isn't taken lightly and is always appreciated.

You guys made this survey "hard"

Can we put this on a real survey platform maybe - asking everyone to copy/paste 17 free form questions in to here is going to be a mess!

Wugapodes (talkcontribs)

Agreed, especially since flow discussions are not the typical communication style for many wikimedians. It would be easier to give feedback through a dedicated form

Whatamidoing (WMF) (talkcontribs)

This should be possible, but it would entail a delay. I'll ask some folks and see if it could be worked out.

Johan (WMF) (talkcontribs)

We're looking into it. Option A is to see if we can get an existing survey library into the app without too much work. If not, we'll re-work the entire thing some other way.

Hi, I'm sorry if I sound a bit direct but why the app is not reusing the design of the mobile frontend? That would at least gives a consistent experience to the user who sometimes use the app and sometimes uses the web

RSchoenbaechler (WMF) (talkcontribs)

Hey @Ladsgroup — thanks for the feedback and no worries, we like it "direct". A few weeks back, we released a few thoughts on app strategy over on the design style guide. Check it out, I believe it contains answers to your question re: "usage the mobile web frontend". That said, we definitely aim to achieve a certain level of consistency across platforms and allocated more resources to the "design systems" initiatives, just recently. Hope that helps & let me know if you have any further questions. Thanks, Robin
