The Maps team in Discovery just enabled a pretty neat set of features for maps on Wikivoyage. Editors can now add interactive maps using a tag or even with VisualEditor. It's a work in progress but along the line of what is being talked about here. This post by Yuri on the maps mailing list goes into some more detail.

Indeed! I did mention that in my initial post, but I'm glad you supplied the link to the announcement -- I've now included the link in the main entry. in MediaViewer and Wikipedia are tracked in T58666. (The latter is already possible but has poor performance.) MediaViewer is a poor interface for viewing maps, though. Kartographer is surely better suited for that.
