Hi Billinghurst and Lydia. Your discussion at phab:T103102#1894358 is one that I've had Many many times in the last few years (from both perspectives - both advocating for new preferences, and explaining the difficulty with new preferences).

I've finally written up an essay about it, on this page, to compliment the alternative viewpoint that I commented on over at Talk:Requests for comment/Redesign user preferences#An Ode to Options, A Paean to Preferences.

(To anyone: Feel free to rename this page, or amend/improve in other ways. :-)

I don't dare to add a "See Also" link sink, however http://neverworkintheory.org/2016/06/09/too-many-knobs.html and https://ometer.com/preferences.html and w:en:Default effect could be worth reads. --AKlapper (WMF) (talk) 14:29, 8 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Jdforrester I don’t think it’s warranted to make the quote not flow into that section, as it seems quite suited for both “sections”, especially the second. Aaron Liu (talk) 14:49, 16 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

My understanding is that they are different statements from different people, hence the separators. Merging them all into one block makes it unclear that they're from different people, surely? Jdforrester (WMF) (talk) 14:51, 16 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
I’ve checked the source link (Talk:RfC/Redesign user preferences) the passage says it was copied from, and it was written by the same person with these improper horizontal rules. Aaron Liu (talk) 14:53, 16 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
Well then, we should probably preserve it intact without changing anything at all? Jdforrester (WMF) (talk) 14:55, 16 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
Ehhh, at least on Wikipedia you can copyedit essays for alien formatting. Aaron Liu (talk) 15:02, 16 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
There are lots of things we can do, but I'm not sure it's a good idea, especially in this case. But also happy to go with whatever you think best, as you care more than I do. :-) Jdforrester (WMF) (talk) 16:08, 16 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
