Opt out

The opt out email doesn't seem to work very well. I sent a message asking to opt out after I got a survey invitation, then I immediately got another survey invitation! Y'all got your wires crossed or something? Get your own coding straight before you go surveying how others do it, LOL! --Ashanda (talk) 18:00, 14 January 2015 (UTC)

Hi Ashanda - Sorry you opted out and then got another survey. We are still working out some kinks in how we send out surveys and coordinate everything. We have definitely removed your email from our participant database at this point. So we can learn from this, how did you opt out? Categories

The selection categories appear to be limited to Wikipedia editing, however my responses were based on overall MediaWiki use, primarily on Wikiversity. So, my response counts won't be consistent with the selection grouping. This may skew your data if others have similar editing patterns on other wikis. -- Dave Braunschweig (talk) 18:06, 14 January 2015 (UTC)

Focus on Wikipedia

To partially echo what Dave said above - if your goal is to create better editing tools, you need to look beyond Wikipedia. I suspect that the majority of editing now does not occur on Wikipedia, or even on Wikimedia projects. Power users may have left Wikipedia to work on their own projects; when they return they know wikitext but not [specific template for this circumstance]. Spam look-alike

Two emails came. The first was border-line: was it spam or wasn’t it? The second had the link to this page — though the path should have been the link text.

Please could future emails be writtem as if not spam? Include words about the sender that suggest at least a spear-phish.

I also got two emails, but unlike JDAWiseman, both of my emails had nearly-identical bodies, differing only in the unique "end part" of the "Take this survey" link. They also had slightly-different subject lines. I did not examine the rest of the email headers, I would expect to see routine differences there if I cared to look. Other research opportunities

I received an email with a link to this survey an a link to a page to opt into future research. I was all set to opt in but it said that the research would be conducted on a third-party web site which allowed screen sharing. While I can accept screen-sharing, I do not want to create an account on that particular company's web site nor do I want to have that company involved in any screen-sharing session with Wikipedia researchers.

I am more than happy to help out with research like the "Editing Tasks Survey" which do not require creating accounts on non-Wikipedia sites and which do not require sharing a screen with anyone or any company that is not directly involved in the research project (e.g. a bona fide survey company working on behalf of The Foundation).

Please consider having an opt-in form that says

"Some of our research is conducted using [name of third party site and feature that it using e.g. screen-sharing]. Check here if you are willing to participate in research that uses this third-party site and technology listed. If you leave this un-checked, you will still be invited to participate in research that does not involve the use of this site/technology."

Hello Davidwr, Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback and suggestion for our opt into research survey. In that survey, we do ask people which kinds of research people are willing to participate in (in a list of options). I will consider adding having a question on that survey that allows people to indicate that they are not willing to create an account with Google to get into the HangOuts, but would be willing to participate in other kinds of research. --ARipstra (WMF) (talk) 01:51, 17 January 2015 (UTC)

Asking for an email address

FYI, and FWIW: The WMF Legal department and Qualtrics have made an agreement (contract) that Qualtrics will do nothing with the emails and survey data that we collect. Additional Comments

A survey should give the respondent a chance to make additional comments. There wasn't a proper place for miscellaneous comments, so I MADE a place.

Hi Rogol Domedonfors, I just put up a link to a slide deck with survey results. ARipstra (WMF) will be adding a summary of results to the Findings section in the upcoming days. Unfortunately, we probably can't provide the full set of raw data because we would need to carefully screen out any potentially sensitive information before publishing.
