skins for various user groups

Hello, has someone informations about skins for various user groups ? Where can I see which user has which skin in active mode ?

I want something like a red background for an admin user and a green background for a normal user. Are there extensions for my problem ? I found nothing

Paint it black

Hi all,

I think that a skin with a dark background will save energy, as opposed to the current black text on white background. The search engine Blackle uses a dark background. Maybe we should try using an energy-saving skin (based on Vector) on Wikipedia etc.?

"User types"?

Hi,

I'm going to change this page in a second, but I wanted there to be a place to discuss the change, and for others to know why I did it.

The configuration of "user|developer|administrator" might be sort of helpful, but it's very divisive, and buckets people into groups to which they may not always subscribe. For example, the first-time administrator (one of the most common visitors to this page) would not think to look at that column, they would look at the users column. Typing people rather than actions is not super-helpful.

With that in mind, I'm changing it to remove the "user type" column and expanding the "action" column. If you have a problem with that, feel free to revert, but I'd very much appreciate an explanation.

Detect skin on templates

Does MediaWiki license allow me to make Skins and sell them commercially?

Is this a problem?

Further more, is using MediaWiki in commercial or proprietary manners a problem?

Yes, you can charge money for your skins and as far as I'm aware, this isn't a violation of the license terms (but I Am Not A Lawyer). I encourage you to do your own research on the GNU General Public License, version 2 license terms (since it's the license under which MediaWiki core and many extensions and skins are available).
Using MediaWiki commercially is not a problem in any way, shape or form — plenty of sites out there do that already (i.e. ShoutWiki, Wikia, wikiHow, ...). --Jack Phoenix _(Contact) 07:49, 5 November 2015 (UTC)

Child skins?

@Michael Ten: Yes and no. Yes, Extension:Theme exists and allows you to define themes (essentially prebuilt CSS customizations on top of an existing skin); see, for example, the Dark Vector theme and compare that to what the ordinary Vector skin without customizations looks like. Admittedly I'm not sure how the WordPress equivalent works like, so this may or may not be what you're looking for. --Jack Phoenix _(Contact) 07:49, 5 November 2015 (UTC)

Writing a Skin vs Updating Common.css

Hi, can I ask for some opinions on something? I've been tasked with re-branding our company MediaWiki instance to reflect the company branding throughout. We're largely happy with the functionality and layout of the Vector skin, but we'd want the styles to be updated throughout.

Does writing a custom skin give me any advantage over updating Common.css, or vice versa? Is there a generally preferred or recommended approach to this kind of job?
