What happens to old content?

edit

Exactly what happens to the current content of talk pages when one installs and enables the extension? I'd like to install it but I don't want to lose the old content. Tactica (talk) 23:25, 8 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

Nothing. DiscussionTools is a frontend for manipulating Wikitext discussions. Even on wikis where it is enabled, you still can type your comment manually using the full-page editor with a colon and four tildes, as I am. * Pppery * it has begun 00:18, 9 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
(edit conflict) Nothing – DiscussionTools just provides an interface over the traditional wikitext talk pages of MediaWiki core, so if you’ve used the core talk pages (haven’t used any talk page-related extensions previously), then the content of your existing talk pages will be recognized by DiscussionTools, and even previous discussions can be continued using the new tools (if they’re formatted the way DiscussionTools expect them to be formatted; if they’re formatted differently, then the tools may not work, but the content will still be readable). If someone doesn’t like the new tools (or if some existing discussions are incompatible with the tools), the existing section edit links can still be used. While the new topic tab is overridden by DiscussionTools, users can opt out of this behavior. In fact, users can opt out of any and all features of the extension in the preferences, so everyone can decide on their own what features they like or dislike.
If you’ve already used a talk page-related extension like StructuredDiscussions or LiquidThreads, it’s more difficult to migrate, but the difficulty is in the undeployment of the previous extension, not in the deployment of DiscussionTools. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 00:18, 9 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
That's good to know. Thank you both! --Tactica (talk) 00:44, 9 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
