A few members from the Design Team at Wikimedia Foundation will be attending the 2018 Wikimedia Hackathon.
Purpose edit
The Design team's intent is to help community developers and members create usable and consistent design solutions for projects related to the Wikimedia movement.
We are a multidisciplinary team with extensive experience in user experience design and research, engineering, information architecture, human-computer interaction (HCI), visual design, accessibility and usability.
Design support edit
The Design team is always keen on working with community developers to build better software. If you are working on a project and need help to decide the best way for users to interact with it, we can help. We can provide support with designing the big picture of your project or specific details. Well-designed software that is easy to use and consistent with our design principles will benefit all of our users.
Here are functional areas that you can get help with from the Design Team at the Hackathon:
- Review your product to identify common usability issues (Heuristic review)
- Introduce and help to apply the design recommendations from the Wikimedia Design Style Guide
- Provide general usability recommendations.
- Interaction design: Define the steps for your users to have a fluent experience.
- User Interface Design: organise information and functionality in a clean layout.
- Visual Design: help you apply color, icons, images and adjust visual aspects.
- User Research: identify the key questions to figure out if your idea works, and how to answer these.
Activities edit
Design team will be conducting a few activities at the Hackathon for participants who are interested in designing for MediaWiki and Wikipedia.
Design research edit
The Android team is working on some new functionalities that will hopefully improve the app experience for those who speak more than one language. We hope to take the opportunity of the hackathon to test the usability of these functionalities with multilingual users.
The Language team has been working on improvements to Content Translation, and usability testing on this 'version 2' will be done at the Hackathon to gauge fluency of use and quality of experience, especially for newer editors/translators.

Design Sprint Workshop edit
We would like to conduct a design workshop to better understand how editors use mobile devices and also create a space for editors and community members to sketch out ideas to solve the problems they face.

Accessibility consultation for your project/extension/gadget edit
We introduce attendees resources on accessibility and fundamentals on how to design for impaired audiences. We will also go and provide hands-on help.
