Wikirating project

Dear Yaron, thank you so much for all your contribution in MediaWiki. Counting Characters

i'd like to count the characters in all articles in my dental wiki (last revisions only). then i will divide that number by the average number of characters in A4 format page. this will give me the number of pages my printed wiki would have. i will display a google chart to show how it is growing. i don't want to use the Collection Extension (somehow it has troubles adding more than 500 articles). i have 2000 articles. or maybe counting bytes is better? what do you think?

Thank you, Yaron, for the great extension Replace Text. I'm new to MediaWiki but am having fun getting up and running. I still don't understand caching or optimizing, and I had just begun to look for bots, knowing that I needed a way to clean up the text in my recipe wiki. I still don't know what a bot is, but along came your extension just in time. I "think" in terms of "search and replace," anyway, so your Replace Text extension filled my need. I have only begun using it and am watching how it seems to work as a cron job, and I still don't know what causes the job to apparently start and then stop and then start again, and how my logging in (or trying to) or logging out (or trying to) affects the background processes. But Replace Text is chugging away right now, and I can find other things to do until it's finished. I see that others seem to think that the replace operations are nearly instantaneous, but I think they're getting that impression simply from the "done" message, while the process actually continues in the background. Problem with Semantic Forms

I keep getting this issue:

Catchable fatal error: Argument 1 passed to Article::__construct() must be an instance of Title, null given, called in /homepages/16/d208095195/htdocs/matt/mtpwiki/extensions/SemanticForms/includes/SF_Utils.inc on line 45 and defined in /homepages/16/d208095195/htdocs/matt/mtpwiki/includes/Article.php on line 50

Problems with average function

I am using average function to calculate average of two numbers, If one of which is zero, i get answer as zero. For Example for numbers 0 and 0.5, I get result as 0, instead of 0.25 Is this a known issue?

Also I would like to limit the the number of digits after decimal point, like 0.33 instead of 0.333333333 is it possible to do this?

No, I've never heard of that happening. It could be a mistake somewhere on your side - is the type of the property set to "Number"? For the second question, you could probably use StringFunctions to get the format you want. Yaron Koren 15:37, 10 March 2009 (UTC)

Help

Yaron, it seems you know your way around - do you know if it is possible to make a list of all the newest pages from a wiki in a certain namespace? I have read Help:NewPages and tested it out but there is a slight problem, the results of this template always have the "Created page with: <content>" thing in them. Having Page A connect to Page B and Page B connect to Page C and Page C connects to Page D, is there a query, etc that I can make to display the connections from Page A to Page D.

Something like:

• Page C

This might be a delusion post due to lack of sleep though.

Semantic Result Formats

I love the awesome work you put into this extension, and all the related ones. But I couldn't find much of a documentation on usage of the Math formulae added into the extension. Does the max compare results with each other, and could you give a small example on how this would be syntaxed? I figured that if it works as intended, then I could, say do special formatting to the top 3 parameters of each column (individually) displayed in an #ask or #show result using a template. Thanks. Yeah, there's not much documentation - the idea is that if you have, say, a property called "Has population" for a group of countries, you can call something like "{{[[Category:Countries]]|?Has population|limit=500|format=max}}" to get the highest number in there (setting a high limit is important, so you don't miss any pages). Sir I am an sysop in hindi wiki, there are some tools that is not installed in hindi wiki. We have a requirement of abuse filter and to have priveledge(right) to a sysop to add some user group like roll backers, reveiwers , confirmed user. For all these, and most other, extensions, you can go to this page, and select the specific extension you want, and the specific language, and see the current state of translation. If you're feeling ambitious, you can add in the translations that are still needed through that same page - you first just need to request an account on that wiki. Redirect in templates

Hi, I'm using semantic forms and I have a question. I'm following this example. Everything works ok, but: I have one entry for the author John Smith, and another for a book written by J. Smith. When I follow the red link of "J. Smith", it appears the form to create a new author. However, I just want to make the redirect to "John Smith". If I write the redirect in the "Text" part and I save the page, it appears a page with the empty template "Author" followed with the redirect. Now the question: is there any way to create a redirect with the form? (ok, I can create the redirect by myself without using the form, but other users can be confused with it). If it doesn't exist, I think it would be very interesting to have (in the form) an optional button to create the redirect, in which a new form appears (text with autocomplete, pointing to the same property, in this case, "author"). SF manual project?

About removing the Extn:SF/Manual/<pages>...

Did you start duplicating these 'declarative'-style SF manual pages somewhere in the main manual text, or did you think that it was too confusing to have both the old 'procedural'-style and the declarative-style manuals (with the latter probably being very out of date)?

Since I wasn't keeping the declarative manual up to date, I can understand why it was confusing, I'm just curious if you made any specific changes to trigger this. Similarly, you didn't delete all the pages in this namespace, see:

Is there any reason you kept the text for the #formlink PF, but removed the text for the #forminput PF? I'm just thinking how to best work together on this in future.

As we discussed at length before, I prefer declarative-style or reference-style documentation rather than long procedural walk throughs (the latter are useful the first time, but less useful later). I know there is the cheat sheet, but it's often too concise. So I'll continue to nominally maintain these docs elsewhere if you think it's too confusing to have them on MW.Org. Alternatively If it's just an issue of keeping them up to date, I'd put them back, integrate them with the old manual, and make an effort to keep on top of that.

Hi - well, both: it was triggered in part by my overhaul of the SF documentation about a month ago, but I also just thought that having two sets of documentation was confusing, especially since the "manual" did indeed have some out-of-date information. The overhaul was meant to split up the documentation into more manageable pieces, so in some ways it more closely matches the manual you were working on. I definitely would prefer having one set of documentation to two, yes - if you think there's something missing in the current documentation, I'd be interested to hear that. Hello. As I said, I think the current documentation lacks good 'reference' style information for things like the various parser functions. Currently it has excellent 'procedural' style documentation, namely, tutorials broken down by perceived tasks. However, the various components of SF can be combined in near infinite (or lets just say, many ;-) ways, and it's impractical to write tutorials for all the ways they may be combined (of course it's great to cover the main usage cases). So... I think it would be good to have clear sections or sub-pages that simply describe the various components in detail for reference, e.g., one page per parser function at least. Perhaps it's just the way my brain works, but I really miss such pages compared to the 'task oriented' pages. This is why I started the 'manual' (bad name). I don't think it's so confusing to have more than one source of information, but I have to admit to failing to keep it up to date, which is of course a big problem. Let me know if you have any strong objection to me trying to set up something again. --Dmb 22:09, 14 October 2011 (UTC)

I don't see the current documentation as that procedural - here's the current section about #forminput, for instance. The only perceived task being described here is creating an input for a form. Help with Assira

May you help me a little with that SVN thing? I checked out the Trunk for ConfirmEdit, but Assira doesn't seem to be included anymore. Was ist removed, or am I doing something wrong? Maybe it was removed, but if this is the case let me tell you, that I'd rather develope my own addon further than arguing with all the people who think Asirra isn't worth MediaWiki. :(

Hi - indeed, Asirra was removed at some point, which is too bad. I still absolutely think that it's better if Asirra is placed within ConfirmEdit, instead of as a separate extension - it will make it easier for users to install, and it will be much easier to maintain the Asirra code. The developers probably went overboard in deleting the code, but they did have some valid points about it. Would you be able to make at least some of the fixes that were mentioned here? There aren't really that many of them, and they would improve the code. I can help with any of these, if you want me to - I really would like to see Asirra added to ConfirmEdit again. Okay, just wanted to know to if it was removed or some problem with the way I'm using subversion. As stated on ConfirmEdit's discussion page, I will include every fix suggested in the code-comments, and this will become Version 1.0 of the extension, and I will try to make it part of ConfirmEdit again. But if the developers find something to fix, and say: "Hey! Fix this in the next three days, or your code will be deleted", I have to say: No! Unable to add Category:Pages with YouTube videos to YouTube Widget... Please help.

Hello, I wanted to be able to have all the pages that have YouTube videos to be in a Category so the admins can monitor them for proper content. I've tried placing Category:Pages with YouTube videos before and after the <iframe ...></iframe> and it just shows up before or after the video as [[Category:Pages with YouTube videos]] instead of placing the page in the C:. Hi - my guess is that a widget can't add a category tag, unfortunately. One option for you is to create a template that includes both the widget and the category tag, and use that instead. Yaron Koren (talk) 15:07, 20 March 2012 (UTC)

I'm not sure about whether or not it can be done in ns:widget (perhaps I should post a request on bugzilla); however, creating Template:YouTube with the C: and passing it to Widget:YouTube did work. Templated Concepts?

Hello Yaren, I'm hoping to do something like a cross between a Concept and a template (I think). I have many pages for employees and on each employee's page, I am displaying their position's title and department. I am hoping to set it up so that when they click on their position' title, they are brought to a page that shows all other employees with that Title and Department. There are many combinations of position and department, so I don't want to have to create Concepts for each one.

I know you could do this using Semantic Drilldown, filters, and then linking to the Drilldown page. However, the attributes of the positions are being stored as Semantic Internal Objects, and therefore do not show up in Semantic Drilldown.

I could instead have a template that contains the #ask query and send the parameters to it when I use the template, but I want the result to be a separate page, not within the employee's page. Essentially, have templates dynamically-generate temporary pages instead of being transcluded into the current page.

Is there an alternate way to do this currently with SMW? Perhaps I'm just thinking about this in the wrong way? --Movermeyer (talk) 14:58, 15 August 2012 (UTC)

How to send email to all the users when edit some topics

I have installed a wiki in the linux server in my company.Now the manager asked to add a function that when we edit a topic,
we could choose to send emials to the previous authors so that they can verify the edit.
I have already added the ConfirmEdit extension to my wiki project 
and I have read all the php files in this extension but still can not find an available way to relazie the goal.
Could you help me,please?

"Stripped-down" Semantic Forms

I'm one of the admins over on English Wikinews, and have a couple of 'rather vague' questions regarding Semantic Forms.

Example of EzPR

Wikinews uses FlaggedRevs, and a workflow to progress articles developing->review->published (with those failing review going back to developing). We've a pretty horrid (from maintainability perspective) gadget called EzPR where we select from dropdowns, and carry out a peer-review on the article.

Assuming we wanted to create a stripped-down version of Semantic Forms that covered this case, and pretty limited set of other cases, would it be largely possible to do the same? Anything that allowed us to add hidden marks inside the article being reviewed to indicate checked would be useful too.

Another case where we use forms is cobbled together in WN:MAKELEAD. This maintains the lead article templates on the wiki's main page. If/when we do get enough news for a region or topic to have a portal with similar layout to the main page, we'd want to repeat that process.

I suppose the best way to sum up what would be ideal is: a fixed set of three or four semantic forms. I don't know enough about semantic wiki to know if that's feasible, or realistically achievable, without pulling in everything else from SMW. Hi - Semantic Forms is, at its heart, a system for editing calls to templates. Is all the data that you're talking about stored in template calls? If not, then I don't think SF can be used, unfortunately. If it is, though, could you link to an example of such a page on Wikinews? Seeing that might help me to formulate some approach. Please add the documentation for values dependent on that you think is clearer that I have added. It took me about a week to figure out what values dependent on is about and the only understandable piece of documentation I found is here.

Amblerllc Semantic Forms Problems

Hey Yaron,

I have setup a test on referata.com and perhaps I found where the problem lies for $ signs....

To see a true test I would need Header Tabs enabled on Referata.

Let me know what else I can do to show the error.
