A few questions about Wikkii
edit- Has Wikkii discussed IPv6 yet? (I can't find anything in the forums about it)
- Has Wikkii considered using CentralAuth? CentralAuth does have ability to use database prefixes and Extension:Farmer is compatible with $wgConf.
- What does it mean to be a Wikkii community sysop? Jasper Deng (talk) 01:15, 15 June 2012 (UTC)
- I don't really know much about it, so I don't think it's been discussed at all.
- I don't know if they've thought about using CentralAuth. I recommended creating a global login, since it is a feature of the Farmer extension, but they didn't support that type. They have multiple farms, so CentralAuth would be better. It could be problematic because of Advanced Hosting, since not all sysadmins might not want to use it, or might not know how to, or just might not set it up.
- It just means that I'm an admin at the Community Wiki.
- Were you thinking about using it at all? Inquisitor Sasha Ehrenstein aus dem Sturmkrieg Sector (Talk) (Contributions) 01:19, 15 June 2012 (UTC)
- Community Wiki?
- CentralAuth would work very well for Wikkii. It makes it much easier for staff/sysops to carry out actions on particular wikis (which may include removing libel, etc.). Plus, impersonation becomes almost impossible and you have no ambiguity about who is who in different wikis.
- I currently have two wikis on Wikkii, one of which is for storing my programs and sharing them with my friends (not .exe but the source files). Jasper Deng (talk) 01:28, 15 June 2012 (UTC)
- http://community.wikkii.net - It's for registering wikis so we can have a list of all active wikis and their topics to help membership among them. We're also working on templates that can go on the footer and on the main page that have links to wikis on similar topics.
- I'll recommend CentralAuth. I think it would be really good for appointing temporary sysops to admin-abandon wikis so that they don't end up getting spammed and deleted.
- There could be a problem with username changes though, since with CentralAuth, you have to rename the user on every wiki they have used. Though, when thinking about it, it would really help prevent impersonation. If the renaming was restricted to a global staff user group, I think that would also help; is there a list of all the wikis that the username change would need to be made on?
- I've really wanted there to be a global login, since it would help the community feel of wiki, and make Wikkii more completive with Wikia. Inquisitor Sasha Ehrenstein aus dem Sturmkrieg Sector (Talk) (Contributions) 00:26, 15 June 2012 (UTC)
- Special:CentralAuth/Jasper Deng shows the wikis I'm on, and thus what to rename. Jasper Deng (talk) 00:26, 15 June 2012 (UTC)
- Wikkii was recently transferred to Gunggo, and there hasn't seemed to be any admin activity from them since a few days after the transfer. Inquisitor Sasha Ehrenstein aus dem Sturmkrieg Sector (Talk) (Contributions) 01:58, 15 June 2012 (UTC)
- Gunggo? Jasper Deng (talk) 05:05, 15 June 2012 (UTC)
- Yeah. Inquisitor Sasha Ehrenstein aus dem Sturmkrieg Sector (Talk) (Contributions) 19:42, 18 June 2012 (UTC)
- What's Gunggo?
- also, how hard is it to obtain Advanced Hosting? Jasper Deng (talk) 06:10, 27 June 2012 (UTC)
- It used to be not that hard, as long as you can be assumed to follow through with setting it up. If you are a regular there it wasn't that hard. Although, after the transfer to Gunggo, it seems that a few people have not received Advanced Hosting.
- http://www.gunggo.com/ Inquisitor Sasha Ehrenstein aus dem Sturmkrieg Sector (Talk) (Contributions) 16:14, 27 June 2012 (UTC)
- My application is mainly to get more flexibility than the farmer wiki. Guess that might be insufficient... Jasper Deng (talk) 19:31, 27 June 2012 (UTC)
- That should be good enough. I can try mentioning this on the forum. At least with their old owner, I think the only requirement was really being expected to actually setup the wiki. Since you have a lot of experience with MediaWiki, that shouldn't be a problem. Inquisitor Sasha Ehrenstein aus dem Sturmkrieg Sector (Talk) (Contributions) 20:28, 27 June 2012 (UTC)
- It's been over 72 hours. What do I do? Jasper Deng (talk) 04:20, 28 June 2012 (UTC)
- I just applied for an Advanced Hosting wiki where users can request setup of wikis if they need more flexibility than a Farmer wiki, but don't have the experience to set up a wiki on their own. Basically, I'll setup a wiki in a folder of the domain. I requested sk.wikkii.net, and requested wikis would go under sk.wikkii.net/wikiname. If accepted, I could set up a wiki for you. - Well, I'm planning on using CentralAuth and using multiple wikis, sooo.... Jasper Deng (talk) 04:33, 28 June 2012 (UTC)
- I was going to install CentralAuth on it also, to help the community aspect between the wikis. If you're going to do anything really complex, I could try asking them to approve your request. Wikkii has seemed dead since the owner changed. I sent them an email about it. Инкуиситор Саша Ехренстеин аус дем Стурмкриг Сектор (Talk) (Contributions) 04:49, 30 June 2012 (UTC)
- Yeah, thanks.
- Besides CentralAuth, I'm going to have CheckUser and a bunch of other extensions, but nothing that requires too much. One thing to note is that CentralAuth works only if each wiki has its own database. Jasper Deng (talk) 02:14, 4 July 2012 (UTC)
- I can install the CheckUser extension. Some of the other advanced wikis have it. Running maintenance scripts requires cron jobs though.
- I'll be using separate databases for all the wikis. There doesn't seem to be a limit to only being able to create one. I think it was removed when people were asking about setting up forums related to the wiki. Инкуиситор Саша Ехренстеин аус дем Стурмкриг Сектор (Talk) (Contributions) 04:09, 4 July 2012 (UTC)

Wikkii gone?
editIts domain names wikkii.com and wikkii.net now appear to be expired, as DNS lookups reveal no addresses. Jasper Deng (talk) 05:41, 4 November 2012 (UTC)
- It seems to be inactive at the moment, and has been so for a week. We were discussing the problem in this discussion: http://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=285314388256011&id=106502989470486 I checked the WHOIS data recently, and it appeared to be registered. Maybe they recently expired or were cancelled? That would appear that Wikkii was deliberately closed.
- There was a time a few months ago were Wikkii was apparently transferred to "Gunggo" without any announcement except for a few replies to a discussion in the support forum. Since the transfer, there was no admin activity that could be noticed. I suspect that the new admins just gave up, which is going to have a lot of people very angry. - Sorry. I suspected them because two users and an IP were making similar strange edits to a single talk page. - No. Just adding {{Delete }} to a spam page will be enough to tell sysops that it can be deleted. Obvious spambots then would get blocked on sight. Jasper Deng (talk) 06:29, 10 December 2012 (UTC)

Category:Spammers and whatnot
editI noticed that you created Category:Spammers and some related templates in your userspace yesterday. As is the case with websites that allow contributions from the general public, be it forums, guestbooks or wikis or whatever, spammers are a rather common nuisance nowadays.
However, it's worth noting that MediaWiki.org is not the English Wikipedia; our main focus is documenting the MediaWiki software and things related to it. As such, I believe — and I think I also speak for the majority of our developers and admins when I say this — that denying recognition is the best possible approach. We don't need templates and categories "glorifying" this kind of counter-productive behavior.
I had a similar discussion about the same issue with Jasper Deng in May; you might find it interesting.
All in all, any and all anti-spam and anti-vandalism work is and always will be appreciated! However, it's best to be somewhat discreet about it. If you feel that a steward should perform some CheckUser queries or whatnot, feel free to approach them on the #wikimedia-stewards IRC channel on the freenode network.
Likewise, if you have any questions regarding this particular issue, please don't hesitate to contact me (via IRC or my talk page) — many MediaWiki developers and MW.org administrators are in the #MediaWiki IRC channel. Jack Phoenix (Contact) 21:41, 31 December 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks for letting me know.
- I also believe that denying recognition is also important, as it discourages people from vandalizing in the first place. While on any popular wiki, vandalism won't last long, with varying levels of overtness, the goal of many vandals would be to at least make themselves famous among the admins since they're vandalism would be reverted and go unnoticed. Because of our purpose, I think it's especially unnecessary to devote a lot of policy or infrastructure to dealing with spam and vandals, beyond just what is needed to get rid of it. Also because of our purpose, I think it's not quite as important to maximize denying recognition since this isn't a major vandalism target the way the English Wikipedia is. That said, it's still important and we shouldn't have "monuments" to vandals by doing things like publicly listing their sockpuppets and how to look out of them.
- As for spammers, I'm not sure it's quite as important to deny recognition since all they do is post massive numbers of links and advertisements, and they aren't affected by how people deal with them. I agree that because of our purpose, we shouldn't devote a lot of the website to worrying about them. ఠ_ఠ Inquisitor Sasha Ehrenstein des Sturmkrieg Sector (Talk) (Contr) 21:41, 31 December 2012 (UTC)

Concerning your Story Paragraph extension for MediaWiki
editI recently tested your Story Paragraph extension on MW 1.19.3 and it works well, and I wanted to thank you for creating the extension.
However, the parser hook you use is rather cumbersome to type, so I'd like to suggest the following parser hook be added to your extension to make use of the extension easier.
$parser->setHook( 'stypgh','wfStoryParagraphRender' );
I added this to my localhost wiki's copy of your extension, just under the line for the standard parser hook, and I found it not only works with no problems, but it also creates a shorter parser hook that performs the same functions.
To be exact, <stypgh> and </stypgh> work just as well as the default <story-paragraph> and </story-paragraph> hooks, but the added hook I created is a shorter to type alternative that is distinctive enough it shouldn't conflict with other parser hooks and short enough that it's less cumbersome to type.
I'm wondering if you like this suggestion and wish to incorporate it into your extension as an alternative parser hook, and if you approve, I was wondering if my contribution would be attributed to "Arcane".
If not, I understand completely, and in any case, I again thank you for creating the extension. Arcane21 (talk) 02:39, 3 March 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks. I can do that. I was wondering whether I should include a shorter tag, since the current one is fairly long. I can attribute your contribution. I'll add your username and a link to your MW userpage under the description information. Thanks for your contribution.
- Also, could you please add your wiki to the extension page, with a new section for "wikis using this extension?" I find such sections to be useful for evaluating and observing extensions before installing them, and I'm sure other people find them useful for the same reason. ఠ_ఠ Inquisitor Sasha Ehrenstein des Sturmkrieg Sector (Talk) (Contr) 02:39, 3 March 2013 (UTC)
- Unfortunately, my wiki is a personal localhost install (on my computer, not connected to the internet), so I'm afraid I can't list it as an example.
- As for your attribution conditions, that sounds fine, feel free to add my username and link to the description. Arcane21 (talk) 02:39, 3 March 2013 (UTC)
- Ok, I was wondering if it was public or private. I'll add mine so that people can see an example of it. ఠ_ఠ Inquisitor Sasha Ehrenstein des Sturmkrieg Sector (Talk) (Contr) 02:39, 3 March 2013 (UTC)
- I noticed an error in Version 1.1 of the extension you'll want to fix
- The Description Message line for the extension doesn't parse correctly because of the bolding marks around "Additional Contributors" and breaks the whole extension.
- I removed them and modified the line like this:
'descriptionmsg' => 'This extension adds story paragraph tags to the wiki in order to format stories. Additional Contributors:[http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/User:Arcane21 Arcane]',
- This fixed the extension and kept it from breaking. It looks slightly uglier, but the parser confuses the bolding marks for the marks at each end of the string and breaks the whole extension. Arcane21 (talk) 02:39, 3 March 2013 (UTC)
- Ok, I was wondering if it was public or private. I'll add mine so that people can see an example of it. ఠ_ఠ Inquisitor Sasha Ehrenstein des Sturmkrieg Sector (Talk) (Contr) 02:39, 3 March 2013 (UTC)

editThat blows. Then again, you were having tons of database issues on your old hosting so reestablishing it on your own might be for the best.

Could you modify this to work on the side panels of the skin?
editFYI, Dusti (from Orain) saw the WikiBanner extension and fell in love with it, was wondering if you could modify it to display on the side panels (small, non-invasive, beautiful....that was his words on what he hopes for with the side panel display).
On behalf of not only Orain but also myself, I'd really appreciate this, as it frankly looks like a simple, easy to use advertising, banner extension, and compared to the others we've looked at, it's basically idiotproof, so if you don't mind, could you refine as described above please? GethN7 (talk) 03:04, 15 January 2015 (UTC)
- Yeah. I'll do that. I'll start a new page and repository for it, since everything from the era it's from is cringe worthy due to being corrupted by a horrible idiot we knew IRL. Lieutenant Aleksandr Reznov 03:20, 15 January 2015 (UTC)
