Need a little advice on who to direct this feature request to

I'd like to post a feature request regarding the ability to directly edit the content type entries available for use with Special:ChangeContentModel, but I don't know which particular project or user group to direct it to on Phabricator. Any ideas? - DSquirrelGM (talk) 04:40, 2 March 2017 (UTC)

DSquirrelGM, typically new content models are added through MediaWiki extensions. Was there anything in particular you had in mind? Harej (talk) 16:56, 2 March 2017 (UTC)

Essentially, I was looking for the ability to directly create a content model list for purely text-based formats such as MathML, SVG, and various other standard text-based formats (which other than changing the content-type wouldn't otherwise need special handling) that could be directly editable by administrators, perhaps using the MediaWiki namespace (just for sake of argument let's call it MediaWiki:ContentModels). The net result being that instead of needing to upload text-based files, the files could use the normal editing features to update. Some method to arbitrarily add content types when there would be no extra required processing beyond that. It'd be useful for any type of content that uses XML-based structure almost exclusively. - DSquirrelGM (talk) 18:58, 2 March 2017 (UTC)

Question to an API you created

Hi James,

I recently started working at Wikimedia Germany. My focus is new editor retention work in the german community - similar to your first projects at WMF.

In that role my team created a tool to count views of videos the potential new editor viewed on a wiki-page. If you're interested you can find it here: https://tools.wmflabs.org/commons-video-clicks/ .

We are using your API (https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/P4339) to get the data and I have two questions and hope you can help me with that.

First, the tool is using the following query to get the data in JSON and showing it in the tool: https://tools.wmflabs.org/mediaplaycounts/api/1/FilePlaycount/date_range/How_Wikipedia_contributes_to_free_knowledge.webm/20170501/20170503. A colleague told me that in the consecutive dates in the JSON output there is stated that the data is updated daily. The problem is, that form July Second on there is no data for the views. E. g. the following query gives no data: https://tools.wmflabs.org/mediaplaycounts/api/1/FilePlaycount/date_range/How_Wikipedia_contributes_to_free_knowledge.webm/20170705/20170706. Do you have more information on the update rates or missing update of the data itself?

Second, do you know in whitch time zone the date in the database is?

I would love to have a feedback if this message reached you and if or when you could help me with that. Maybe you know someone who else can support me here?

Hello Stefan Schneider. There was an issue with that API that caused it to not update daily. The new one, located at https://partnermetrics.wmflabs.org/mediaplaycounts/2, is much faster and also updates on a daily basis now. Also, the time zone used is UTC. Harej (talk) 05:05, 27 July 2017 (UTC)

Toolforge migration broke wprequests

If you look at any page of your wprequests tool it fails due to the new Toolforge domain not being on ALLOWED_HOSTS. This doesn't seem like a particularly complicated fix; if the source code is publicly available I should be able to fix it. Vahurzpu (talk) 21:15, 14 August 2020 (UTC)

How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future.
