Motion JPEG and other free formats upload

In my opinion, Wikimedia should allow uploading in pretty much any free format (such as the ones that gstreamer good plugins support ) that can be transcoded into ogg theora or webm. This would include motion jpeg, which some cameras (such as for example http://www.fujifilmusa.com/products/digital_cameras/a/finepix_ax650/specifications/ ) support. Motion JPEG is very poor so far as compression goes, so it shouldn't be served for download, but we should at least make it easier for people to upload other free formats besides Ogg and Webm. Suggestion: separate ingestion and playback more

Hello Brion,

This is a great page. It would be helpful to split it into "if we don't support MP4 playback" and "if we don't support MP4 ingestion". That also highlights how much more daunting the challenge of client-side ingestion is. Sj (talk) 08:05, 29 January 2014 (UTC)

Possible work

Are there other existing efforts worth listing here? You mention Brendan's work; GMG and others might merit a mention. Pushing for better toolchains for Ogg and WebM is daunting, but presumably we're not alone in wanting this very, very much. Who at Google and Xiph are responsible for such things?

Also: for those not following mobile app development, is there a specific Commons app being discussed, WP apps, something new?

Re specific apps: currently we have an existing Commons photo uploader app which we launched last year which doesn't yet do video or audio (Yuvi did some very early experimentation on Android with audio transcoding on the client, but we never had the chance to investigate it fully or bump it up to video to see how that would perform). Wikipedia reader app is currently being redone for iOS and Android -- and we're starting to add contributory features with basic section editing. Including photo upload is a logical future step (though we may still keep the separate Commons app and give it more of a discovery/reuse focus as well as uploads). Audio and video contribution remain open questions for the future -- we want them eventually but we'll see if we can do the investment in the short term or if we have to wait for more things to fall into place. --brion (talk) 19:01, 31 January 2014 (UTC)
