Goals vs Strategic Direction

We are missing actual goals associated with each of the two strategic directions. This should ideally be reflected in the text of the purpose and results of the Dev Summit 2018. For example, in "How does the session’s topic relate to the broad strategic goals, namely knowledge equity and knowledge as a service?" I suggest we replace "goals" with "directions". Related to this topic:

  • At some point in Phase 2 discussions, we need to come up with "goals" associated with each strategic direction. Knowledge equity is not a goal on its own, we cannot measure if we achieved it or not.
  • I wonder if one of the goals of the Dev Summit should be creating the first draft of "goals" under each strategic direction, from the technology perspective.

It may be helpful to have a look at UN's sustainable development goals. I think we can think of an item such as No Poverty as a strategic direction, that has specific goals such as "By 2030, eradicate extreme poverty for all people everywhere, currently measured as people living on less than $1.25 a day".

@Daniel Kinzler (WMDE) FYI.

Hi Leila! Sorry for the late reply.

Yes, I agree that it is hard to develop a technology strategy of the concrete goals on the product level are not clear yet. But the dev summit does not have the right audience for making this kind of decision, and I'm told we won't have a clear product strategy before the end of 2018.

So, we'll have to make educated guesses, and base our discussions on that. At the same time, we (the engineers) should avoid lengthy discussions of product strategy, and should not try to define such strategy. That's not our expertise, and we are missing key players for that.
