My reasons not to use

  1. Preview is useful, but In VE, categories, importantly maintenance categories, not visible, templates used also not visible.
  2. Spelling check underlines too many items I use on many entries, including words like Translingual (L2 header); Hyponyms, Hypernyms (L3 headers; subgenera, etc
  3. I don't understand the logic by which the spell-check works as many words that I would have expected to trigger underlining don't.
  4. I lose our local (en.wikt) special character tool.

I've completed my trial of this on two entries and will deselect it.

BTW, the only things that the visual ribbon in the normal edit windows does are:

  1. provide opportunities for me to accidentally insert wikitext I don't want
  2. cause the window content to jump while I am trying to select some of it, requiring that I start the selection over. (Alternative is to wait the extra 3-5 seconds for the ribbon to load.)
  3. take up three lines in my edit window.

IOW, I don't use it, so it just gets in the way.

Thanks for taking the time to share all of this information.

  1. Categories aren't visible in the preview for the wikitext editor, either.
  2. The visual editor has no spelling checker.
  3. The visual editor has no spelling checker.
  4. Do you know whether the special character tool in visual editor has been set up for your wiki? (This can only be done by an admin/sysop.)

I finally found them! They're all the way at the bottom of the page, underneath the editing window and all sorts of stuff that I never have any reason to scroll past. Thanks for telling me about that.

Regular (not transcluded) categories are also visible in the visual editor; you just go to the Page options menu and click the Categories item to see the list. But, like the wikitext editor, they're not visible right at the end of the article (yet).
