About this board

An ongoing discussion of Wikimedia Research showcase presentations.

I recommend archiving previous years in a subpage or something. Also, I think that the template you're using to generate the name of the month doesn't really create an anchor that can be used to link to that specific month? I was trying to get a direct link to the June 2023 showcase.

Re: Archiving: Semi-agreed. I do value being able to "ctrl-F" search within a single page, but the page-size is getting quite large (~250kb wikitext, 3.37 MB downloaded).

Re: Anchors: Those should work fine? The wikitext link Wikimedia Research/Showcase#July 2023 and external link both seem to work?

Elitre (WMF) (talkcontribs)

Forgive the wikitext amnesia - I can get the link as you say, I can't reach that section via TOC.

Quiddity (talkcontribs)

Oh! That's because the page is using {{toclimit|limit=3}}, which works in Vector but doesn't work in Vector-2022 (which is less of a problem as it doesn't bump the page-content down), hence I didn't understand the issue at first! :)

Thanks for the nudge -- just wanted to acknowledge that we've seen this and will discuss this week and take action or follow up somehow.

Following up: you're likely not going to see any changes immediately but we like the idea and also want to use the opportunity to make some other adjustments so will be working on figuring this out. Three things that stand out:

  • The page obviously has the value in containing abstracts and video links for the current showcase. Beyond that though, we're going to try to think a bit more about what purpose the page should have (summary? history? other?)
  • Personally, we know one of our use-cases is the ability to quickly search through past showcases as we think about new topics / candidates. We know there's templates for easily searching through archives so that's doable.
  • We think this is also a good opportunity to help make the page into a more usable summary of all the past showcases but are not sure yet what details should be in that information such that it's easily skimmable, easy to maintain, but still a major reduction in page size.
Elitre (WMF) (talkcontribs)

Maybe the Tech Docs team can help with that :)

thanks for the patience -- I've now built in the archive functionality (Wikimedia Research/Showcase#Archive) and will likely blank the pre-2024 showcases from the main page ahead of Wednesday's showcase. still might think about how to build a more usable summary of past showcases but I think this is a good first step.

Hey folks! I got some pings from folks who had been re-sharing the October 2014 video presentation. Apparently it is currently unavailable on youtube. See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-We4GZbH3Iw. Is there something y'all can do to bring it back online?

MGerlach (WMF) (talkcontribs)

@EpochFail the same issue applies to most of the other youtube videos of the showcases before September 2015. I will have a look into the issue. Since you added the link to the youtube-video (diff), do you remember how the showcases were streamed and the videos then uploaded to youtube at the time?

MGerlach (WMF) (talkcontribs)

@EpochFail I reached out to IT Services since they have been supporting us in live-streaming the showcases and uploading them to youtube. Unfortunately, they were not able to track the video. In fact, anything on YouTube before August 2015 is an unknown to the team. @BCampbell (WMF) mentioned that when he started in August 2015, they re-uploaded all videos on individual accounts to a few central accounts but the video you mention was not among them.
