Some of these questions, and therefore possibly the answer, are different if there's a limit to the depth of the trees. User interfaces intended to show similar things sometimes set a small limit as display and user comprehension gets tough with unlimited nesting.

If Flow hypothetically limited nesting to 3 levels, the naive option would be a valid contender. If in practice 10 level deep nesting is common and very large numbers are possible, naive would be a bad idea. LWelling (talk) 21:25, 5 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thats an excellent point that I hadn't considered, I will update the page to reflect these concerns later today. Also if you can think of any specific pros/cons between the different possibilities, or more quetions the data model needs to be able to answer, feel free to edit the document and add your opinions there as well.
