editIn the end, eight of Wikimedia's nine Summer of Code 2012 students passed, and each posted a wrapup post on wikitech-l. Their achievements have already led to improvements in the Wikimedia Incubator, and improvements to Semantic MediaWiki and UploadWizard will reach users soon. Improvements to SVG translation, realtime editing collaboration, and other functionality are also progressing as the students clean up, merge, and iterate on their summer work.

editThe Wikimedia engineering community continues to help the 2012 GSoC students improve their projects towards the goal of release and deployment. Sumana Harihareswara aims to lead a postmortem discussion in November. Rob Lanphier and Sumana attended a GSoC Mentors' Summit in October, and discussed mentor recruitment, community metrics, how to be more effective mentors, student selection strategies, PHP and code review tools, and other related topics. As a follow-up to Summer of Code, the MediaWiki community is discussing whether to participate in Google Code-In.

editThe Wikimedia community is following up its Summer of Code participation with participation in the GNOME Outreach Program for Women, which offers paid internships for work in open source software projects. This follows the community's decision not to participate in Google Code-In due to a lack of mentors. Also, Sumana Harihareswara posted a retrospective on our participation in Summer of Code 2012, concluding that we're improving at student retention but need to get better at producing something useful at the end of a mentorship period, and offering suggestions on how to improve our processes in the future. This activity page ("Summer of Code 2012") is now being retired; in the future, status updates will be on the Mentorship programs page.
