Questions about Help:Interwiki linking

edit

In looking at meta:Help:Interwiki linking and Help:Links, I had some questions that I wanted to share here for wider feedback. It seems that meta:Help:Interwiki linking is somewhat of a tricky case because it is both "Has MediaWiki.org equivalent" and "Actually WMF-specific".

Should we move the content to MediaWiki.org and deprecate the Meta page? I think there's value in keeping the meta:Help:Interwiki linking page on Meta with information about interwiki linking on Wikimedia projects. Even though some of the interwiki links for Wikimedia projects are set up by default with MediaWiki, the information seems Wikimedia-specific enough to warrant its own page.

Should we create a new Help:Interwiki linking page on MediaWiki.org? Looking at Help:Links, the five types of links listed at the top are all documented on that page. I think it would be better to keep with that pattern and not separate out interwiki linking into its own page.

Are there parts of meta:Help:Interwiki linking that apply to all MediaWiki instances that should be moved to either Help:Links or Manual:Interwiki? At first glance it seems like the meta:Help:Interwiki_linking#Interwiki_links_on_other_sites section should be moved to MediaWiki.org, but it's hard to decide what else should be moved. Thoughts? Neither the Project titles and shortcuts table in MetaWiki nor this referenced link below the Default table in MediaWiki have a full list of default interwiki prefixes. For example, Uncyclopedia.
Maybe we could make a complete table on Manual:interwiki, remove the old one, and the Gerrit link too. Network-charles (talk) 22:30, 20 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
The intended scope of these pages:
Help:Links#Interwiki links - information about interwiki links relevant to someone who types things in the Wikitext editor.
Manual:Interwiki - information relevant to wiki admins on how to set up interwiki links on their wiki.
m:Help:Interwiki linking - information only relevant to Wikimedia wikis.
m:Help:Interwiki linking#Interwiki links on other sites is already at Manual:Interwiki#Table and query API. m:Help:Interwiki linking#Wikia should probably be deleted entirely as it's not either Meta or MediaWiki.org's goal to document individual wiki farms' hacks. m:Help:Interwiki linking#Interwiki links versus external links and below should probably be moved to MediaWiki. Or maybe they should be deleted entirely because it's not documentation's role to preach to the users like that.
All three pages need a general review for technical accuracy and up-to-date-ness (i.e language like (That is the intention; currently (16-Jan-2007), it does not work on all projects.)). I'll probably handle that sometime if nobody else gets to it first. * Pppery * it has begun 23:15, 23 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for sharing your thoughts, @Pppery. I had subtle doubts about adding m:Help:Interwiki linking#Wikia too. Network-charles (talk) 08:06, 24 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
Also the references to Meta on MediaWiki.org should be dealt with. * Pppery * it has begun 00:32, 24 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
I don't think MediaWiki.org need a separate Help:Interwiki linking page since there isn't enough PD-help content left after the above to warrant it. * Pppery * it has begun 23:16, 23 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
Return to the project page "MediaWiki documentation on Meta-Wiki".
