I am a member of the MediaWiki developer community. In recent years, I have found myself increasingly involved in the MediaWiki Stakeholders community, especially as an organizer of the MediaWiki Users and Developers Conference (formerly known as EMWCon).
As part of my work in the MediaWiki space, I have worked on extensions such as Extension:JWTAuth (which is in Wikimedia source control) and I work on Canasta, which is a Docker-based MediaWiki distribution.
MWCons in recent years have been organized by the MediaWiki Stakeholders' Group. The conferences are therefore integrally tied to MediaWiki.org. As a conference organizer, I would like to be able to add the news blurb whenever a new one is happening; this change has been made in recent years by others, but the organizers usually have to wait for someone with sysop privileges to help us add it. Additionally, it has been helpful for an administrator to modify the sitenotice to display the livestream link whenever MWCon is happening live. Becoming an administrator would streamline this further, as the other organizers are typically busier than me during the conference and I'd like to give them a break. 😊
I am applying because the RfP page implies developers should be the ones who have admin rights on this wiki.
I will invite other admins to help vouch for me in case I am still a bit of a stranger to the other MW.o editors.
(P.S. As a side note, I would have liked to move the MediaWiki Users and Developers Conference 2024 page to "MediaWiki Users and Developers Conference Spring 2024" as per the consensus from the conference organizers, but I do not have the ability to do that unless I am a translation administrator. I'd really rather not request more rights that I don't usually need, but I must wonder why regular sysops do not have that user right?)
- Support And regular sysops per convention can grant themselves tadmin so they aren't really two separate rights. * Pppery * it has begun 04:02, 21 April 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for the support! And that is great to hear, that will be very helpful and good to know if this request is approved. --MyWikis-JeffreyWang (talk) 05:00, 21 April 2024 (UTC)
- @MyWikis-JeffreyWang: you noted that "someone with merge access who uses it to maintain code that runs on Wikimedia sites" is entitled to have admin status, but do you have merge access for any repositories that are actually WMF deployed? Neither JWTAuth nor Canasta are used by the WMF as far as I can see. --DannyS712 (talk) 05:47, 21 April 2024 (UTC)
- I do not have +2 access and I’m aware I am not entitled to any privileges. I’ve presented my credentials to give everyone my background in the community and to say that, if admin rights are for developers, then I am a developer albeit without +2 privileges. Full disclosure, I would use admin privileges for MWStake-related business. --MyWikis-JeffreyWang (talk) 06:19, 21 April 2024 (UTC)
- I’ve asked for +1 from other admins and have been advised to remove that bit because it’s confusing. —MyWikis-JeffreyWang (talk) 16:13, 21 April 2024 (UTC)
- @MyWikis-JeffreyWang okay, thanks for explaining - I wasn't opposing this, just wondering why you mentioned that part of the policy - lets leave this open for a week and if there is consensus I'd be happy to grant you adminship --DannyS712 (talk) 19:27, 21 April 2024 (UTC)
- Support I can vouch for Jeffrey, and that he won't abuse his admin privileges. Yaron Koren (talk) 18:27, 21 April 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you Yaron! (And lol about the abusing privileges part) —MyWikis-JeffreyWang (talk) 18:32, 21 April 2024 (UTC)
- Sure, no concerns from me. Taavi (talk!) 19:51, 21 April 2024 (UTC)
- Support I've worked with Jeffrey on several MediaWiki conferences, and he is a valuable member of the community Cindy.cicalese (talk) 19:39, 26 April 2024 (UTC)
Done per above. Editing protected pages for the sake of established MediaWiki community activities like MWStake-related things is definitely a good reason to ask for adminship. However, it doesn't hurt to ask a second opinion when using admin rights for actions which may be seen as related to MyWikis business. Nemo 07:47, 27 April 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you very much! Agreed with you completely. I was perfectly content being a regular editor for a long time, but found myself requesting these rights solely to facilitate MWStake business. I’ll recuse myself for anything related to MyWikis. —MyWikis-JeffreyWang (talk) 13:32, 27 April 2024 (UTC)
