Manual talk:Using content from Wikipedia

Latest comment: 10 years ago by 86.59.98.136 in topic Template "theft?"

Has anyone had inexplicable issues with templates imported from Wikipedia? For instance, I imported w:Template:Infobox person and checked the box to also import templates. But it doesn't seem to be working properly here or here. Any thoughts? Tisane 15:50, 29 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

You forgot to steal site CSS from MediaWiki:Common.css. Max Semenik 16:49, 29 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Good call, plus on libertapedia there were issues with outdated templates. Tisane 15:43, 30 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Bots

edit

We should tell people how to get the same bots that operate on Wikipedia to work on their sites. Tisane 15:43, 30 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Can using site CSS and JS from Wikipedia mess up how your site is rendered on mobile devices?

edit

I am getting some strange reports; see Manual_talk:Short_URL#Short_URL_messes_up_mobile_browsing.3F. It sounds more plausible that it's from copied site CSS or JS than from the short url. Tisane 21:34, 14 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Template "theft?"

edit

Is it against the rules to copy Wikipedia templates for use in other wikis? The article refers to this action as "theft," but also gives advice for how to do it. Maybe I'm missing a joke.

I agree, the section explains issues that may arise when using/importing Wikipedia templates, and how to identify and fix these issues, this can hardly be considered theft. Mlpearc (open channel) 16:50, 3 March 2014 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, it was a joke. The whole page used to be called Manual:Stealing content from Wikipedia but then we decided to get serious. Leucosticte (talk) 22:27, 3 March 2014 (UTC)Reply
But what is the general suggestion for giving credit to wikipedia when you - let's say - borrow some templates and modules? 86.59.98.136 14:46, 3 October 2014 (UTC)Reply
