TEC7: Environmental Sustainability

• Program Goals for FY18/19:What is the environmental cost of spreading free knowledge around the world, and what can we do at WMF to minimize that cost? These are the questions we are setting out to answer with this program. We will first produce and publish an environmental impact statement, and once we understand that impact, we will establish measures we can track and a sustainability roadmap with actions we can both take as an organization and recommend to our chapters, affiliates, and community with regard to minimizing our environmental impact as a movement.

Assessment of WMF's environmental impact

Produce an environmental impact report and statement

Goal(s)

• Identify and contract with an organization that can assess WMF's environmental footprint.

Status

 Note: July 2018

To do

To do Searching for a new organization is a bit hard due to finding an org that can do the whole spectrum is difficult.

 Note: September 26, 2018

This goal is still in a To do status and going slow as finding a contractor is difficult for this.

Produce a Sustainability Roadmap

Goal(s)

• Through interactions with community members and teams at WMF, work on an actionable plan for reducing WMF's environmental footprint

Status

In progress Presented a poster and slide deck at Wikimania to raise more community awareness and involvement

In progress Reaching out to a few folks to be part of a group team and so far, having success.

This is still In progress, and Erika is working with Lucas and a few folks in DE that can help out with the coalition group and statement.

• Identify and contract with an organization that can assess WMF's environmental footprint.

Status

 Note: October 29, 2018

In progress Following up on a couple of leads to potential vendors who can assess our globally distributed footprint, getting prepared to accept an offer soon.

Contract is in progress and we've been meeting with the prospective vendor and this can be considered  Done

Status

In progress Kickoff newly organized coalition to collect data and help guide the creation of a roadmap. We're hoping for a potential vendor to do this work using the coalition to help and guide.

 Note: December 13, 2018

Now that we have a contractor identified, this work is now In progress and the contract will be for 6 months or less.

• Work with vendor and internal coalition to collect and analyze sustainability data
• Generate an environmental footprint report

Status

 Note: January 23, 2019

* Meeting with the team this week, January 25, to discuss all the things.

 Note: February 27, 2019

* We met with SSC (outside vendor) to talk about their plans for collecting and analyzing our data for sustainability proposals.

 Note: April 8, 2019

• We've collected the data but the analyzing will happen in Q4, Partially done

• Vendor will facilitate a workshop to discuss the environmental footprint report and outline a road map

Status

* This workshop will happen at the end of the engagement discussed above

* After our discussion earlier this month, we think that this workshop will happen in Q4.

• This wasn't able to be completed in Q3, so it is going in Q4 work.

Goal(s)

• Vendor to analyze sustainability data from internal data collection and survey
• Vendor to generate an environmental footprint report

Status

 Note: May 29, 2019

• The vendor has completed the draft of the sustainability report (and the environmental footprint report) and presented it to the Foundation in it's draft form recently, however, it's still a work In progress.

 Note: June 26, 2019

• This is now  Done as we've received the report from the vendor. However, it has not been formally delivered to the Board.

Produce a Sustainability Roadmap

Goal(s)

• Vendor will facilitate a workshop to discuss the environmental footprint report and outline a roadmap
• Share the roadmap and any resulting action items with the organization (project completion)

Status

 Note: May 29, 2019

• The workshop was  Done last week; the sharing of the road map to the Foundation is scheduled for next week. A stretch goal will be to present the findings at Wikimania 2019.
