Wikimedia Hackathon 2018/Prehackathon Montpellier
The pre-hackathon in Montpellier will take place the 14th and 15th of April 2018 in Montpellier, France. It is a warm up event linked to Wikimedia Hackathon 2018 and it will be focused on gadgets maintenance and updating, especially for the French Wikipedia.
Scope
editDuring the Wikiconvention francophone 2017, there was an open discussion about the state of technical things on the projects, especially the French Wikipedia. We observed that the gadgets [in the French Wikipedia at least] are hardly maintained over time and a lot of gadgets are written in old-style JavaScript, likely to break in case of deprecation of some part of libraries and possibly with security concerns.
The following tasks are within the scope of the event (non-comprehensive list):
- Update or rewrite legacy gadgets to state-of-the-art JavaScript
- Update the technical documentation and ensure it is consistent everywhere (or centralize it when possible)
- Create a git repository that non-sysop developers can use to push updates to gadgets, etc. (Phab:T179550)
- Maybe a training session for outsider JS devs who might want to create or maintain Wikipedia gagdets
- Anything related to the creation of a Central Gadget Taskforce (phab:T159334)
