Wikimedia Apps/iOS Suggested edits project/Alt Text Experiment/Test Instructions
Below are instructions to try out the Alternative Text suggested edit flow within the iOS app. Please note, you must have an iPhone to test, this experiment is not available on iPad.
Please pick one track only to test! You will only be able to see the Alternative text prompt one time.
Track 1: Article Editing and then Image Recommendations
editGoal: make two edits within the iOS app that are eligible for the experiment. If our logic is successful, you should only see the prompt to add alt text for ONE of your edits, or NEITHER, not both. Not seeing the prompt is still helpful, as we can verify that you were sorted into control.
Instructions: Follow the steps to be eligible for the experiment! Please share screenshots on the discussion page if you see something that looks off.
Note: If you can only complete part 1, that is ok.
Part 1: Article editing
- Uninstall any existing versions of the Wikipedia App on your iOS Device
- Join Test Flight: https://testflight.apple.com/join/Z0AU0KXC and install the Beta Wikipedia App!
- Install the latest version 7.5.8
- Choose a language to edit on
- If you edit in Portuguese, Spanish, French, or Chinese & would like to make a real edit on those wikis, you can do that. Ensure your chosen language is set as your primary language in the app (Settings Gear > My languages)
- If you do not speak one of the target languages, or don’t want to make an edit on a real wiki, add test.wiki as your primary language in the app. (Settings Gear > My languages > Add another language> Search “Test”. Reorder to make Test wiki first, or remove other languages so that “Primary” appears next to “Test”
- Make an edit on a page that contains an image. The image should not already have alt text (most images do not).
- Make an edit to the page, such as adding a link, changing a word, or adding a word, and publish the edit.
- After edit is published, wait and see if you receive the prompt for “Add missing image alt text?”
- If you did not see the prompt - that’s ok! You are probably sorted into the control group! Continue on to Part 2
- If you did see the prompt - you’re in the experiment group!
