Wikipedia Apps maintained by the Wikimedia Foundation

edit

In mid-2020, we moved to a new system for serving articles for the Android and iOS Wikipedia apps. MobileView, the legacy system was turned off during the week of May 30, 2022.

At that point, a very small portion of our users - fewer than 1% - were still using versions of the Android or iOS app that were released in mid-2020 or earlier, and thus utilizing this aging system.

As of June 2, 2022, these older versions of the app no longer work. Users on these older versions must upgrade their app. For several months prior to the change, users of these older versions received notifications on the top of every Wikipedia article informing them about this upcoming change, and instructing them to upgrade their app.

If you have questions, please email us at android-support@wikimedia.org or iOS-support@wikimedia.org.

Other Wikipedia Apps

edit

If another app directed you to this page, please get in touch with the person or company that maintains your app. They must update the app for it to continue working after mid-May 2022.

If you're looking for a new Wikipedia app: The Wikimedia Foundation creates and maintains Wikipedia apps for iOS and Android, though there are also many other third-party apps available.

(Technical details: The app uses an API - how it communicates with Wikipedia's servers - that has been marked unstable and deprecated back in 2019. Since 2019, the creator has known that the API would be removed at some point in the future. While most creators have stopped using this API, your app unfortunately has not.)
