Suggest machine translations

I think suggested edits are a great useful approach (also for categories and adding media from WMC). However, currently this seems like a huge time-sink that is not efficient in any way. Does the tool suggest machine translated captions translated from the file description or other Wikipedia articles that the same image is used (especially EN WP)? If not, please add that so that people only to correct or adjust the translated captions which often would be better if they write something new – see tools like {{w|DeepL}} and Google Translate usually also works good enough for texts as concise and short as captions usually are.

Moreover, I think it needs ways to add media to many language versions at once such as including all media set on the Wikidata item, see my proposal here. Suggested edits with AI-support would result in far more contributions in far less time and with substantially higher quality. Also consider that there's over 300 languages, writing the captions for just one image takes a lot of time when considering there's so many languages. The MinT project is also relevant. Lastly, nowhere is it specified which Android app is referred to and what the latest status of this is. I guess it's the Wikipedia Android app right? Is this feature live there, please add some info what this project concluded in, thanks.

Hello @Prototyperspective,

Thank you for your thoughtful feedback! We appreciate your insights on improving the efficiency of suggested edits, especially for categories and adding media.

To address your concerns:

  1. Machine Translated Captions: We currently offer translations for captions in the Android app, so users can correct or adjust them as needed, which should help streamline the process.
  2. Suggested Edits Page: The page you’re referring to is outdated. I recommend checking out the updated Suggested Edits page for Android, which provides the latest information on this feature.
  3. Android App: Yes, the feature is indeed live in the Wikipedia Android app, and it has been designed to make the process more efficient and user-friendly.

Additionally, if you'd like to stay updated on our ongoing work with the apps, you can subscribe to our quarterly newsletter. It’s a great way to keep informed about the latest developments and features.

Thanks again for your valuable input!

Thanks for your reply!

  1. Great! However, I don't see any info from where the captions whose machine translation become the suggested caption come from – if you only use the captions on WMC, please also use captions from other Wikipedia articles that use the image and if the article is the same as the one where the file is used (just another language) then this is most likely the better thing to use for the suggested captions instead of the WMC caption. If the file is neither used in a WP nor having a caption, I think the file description should be used (and there's also many cases where the description is what describes the file and the caption is just some metadata (example) that is not useful for a caption).
  2. If this page is outdated, then please add the newer one to somewhere at the top. Moreover, that page is linked to the WMC and WD item for Suggested Edits overall but it's only about the Android app while Suggested Edits seems to work on desktop as well. So it seems like there is some mediawiki page on the whole thing across devices missing as is a Wikidata item for Suggested edits in the Wikipedia Android app isn't that the case?
  3. This also should be clearer in this page then.

I intend to make some proposals about Suggested Categories at the updated page or another one. I'll mention Suggested Edits in the linked proposal about adding media in a multilingual way / across language versions.

Hello again,

Thank you for your follow-up!

I wanted to let you know that we have archived the outdated page and directed readers to the newly updated one, which now reflects the current status of the Suggested Edits feature.

As for your suggestion about incorporating captions from other Wikipedia articles using the same image, we appreciate the insight. However, making a change like this would require community consultation. If we proceed with this, rest assured that your idea will be carefully considered as part of the process.

You're welcome to share any additional thoughts!
