Why it is mobile-only?
Topic on Talk:Growth/Personalized first day/Structured tasks/Add an image/Flow
Hi @NGC 54 -- thanks for asking! We've learned that when we build new features, it takes deliberate effort to design, test, and build for both desktop and mobile. In other words, building for both at the same time takes more work than building for just one. The Growth team is focused on helping new people edit who do not have good ways to edit, and many of those people can be found only on mobile devices. These days, more people are visiting Wikipedia from mobile than from desktop, but we all know that it is more difficult to edit from mobile. That's why mobile is a priority.
For this project, we wanted to see if we could get something useful to users sooner by only building it first for the mobile platform. It meant that we didn't need to make desktop designs, run tests with desktop users, or engineer for desktop -- saving us a lot of time. Our plan is to start working on the desktop version after deploying the mobile one.
Does this make sense?
@MMiller (WMF): I was only wanting to know if it will be available for desktop. Where can I test this? At https://test.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Log?type=growthexperiments&user=&page=&wpdate=&tagfilter=&subtype=addimage I see some users testing it, but I do not see the Add an image task in homepage, even if I have homepage enabled and I use test.m.wikipedia.org.
Hi @NGC 54 -- you're welcome to try out the feature in its current state on Test Wikipedia. To do this, you have to run a snippet of code in your browser console, which turns it on. You can right-click and then go to "Inspect". In the console, paste this: ge.utils.setUserVariant('imagerecommendation')
Then go to your homepage and select that task type in the difficulty filters. I recommend doing all this from the mobile site (test.m.wikipedia.org), and with the mobile emulator on in your browser. Let me know how it goes or if you need help setting it up!
