Apparently, I can't transclude a random page onto another page (the reason I want to do this is because I want a random page to come up on the main page after all the important stuff).

Is there a workaround or something to solve this?

search for the extension "Random", You could set up the inclusion of some hand picked pages.

Thanks! That's a bit tedious, but it will definitely solve the problem.

How do I go about transcluding the most recently created page (its content, NOT the edit summary stuff in Special:Newpages)?

I don't see how it would work except on the 3rd-party version, and I'm a bit worried, being an all-around noob. Are there any major dangers to me somewhat haphazardly trying out 3rd-part DPL on my small, private wiki? If so, are they serious enough that I probably shouldn't try?

DPL (thirdparty) is safe enough, esp. on a private wiki. DPL (MediaWiki) is lighter and runs on WikiMedia sites such as Wikipedia.

This will retrun the full content of the most recent article in teh main namespace. Adjust namespace= with other ns names.

{{#dpl:
|namespace=
|count=1
|ordermethod=firstedit
|order=descending
|include=*
|format=,
[[%PAGE%]]
\n,\n,
}}
