Subpage, child page
editThe term subpage in the section on "Replacing a section with an excerpt" means something specific, and articles in Wikipedia are not organized using subpages, although other namespaces may use subpages for various purposes. Using the term subpage in a section on how to use "Excerpt" at an article related by a hypernym-hyponym relationship to another article (known as a parent-child relation in "summary style" at Wikipedia) is inaccurate. If you don't approve of the word child article for some reason, then please find another term, but do not use the term subpage. Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 21:12, 13 July 2023 (UTC)
Trying again. The video does, in fact, correspond to how the majority of Wikipedias do it, which is to say, with two articles, both in mainspace, and without any use of subpages. The documentation should reflect this common usage, match the video, and explain the exceptional cases that don't correspond to this paradigm.
The video example accompanying the text in section Template talk:Excerpt#Replacing a section with an excerpt is for the the English Wikipedia page en:COVID-19 pandemic in South America; in particular, no subpages are involved. So, when explaining this, we should try to find wording that agrees with the video, and isn't contrary to the description of subpages at the various Wikipedias (which are something else), and which corresponds to actual usage of Template:Excerpt at those Wikipedias. Subpages are not used in mainspace at the Wikipedias I checked; here is how that is explained at a handful of them:

As far as usage of the templates in different namespaces, in all cases where there are more than ten uses site-wide, usage is more in mainspace than all other namespaces combined, for example:
- ca:Plantilla:Extracte – 39 total uses, 36 in mainspace, 3 other uses (of which 2 are the template itself)
- de:Vorlage:Exzerpt – 2 total (both from the template itself)
- es:Plantilla:Extracto – total uses: 3261; main: 2518 non-main: 743
- fr:Modèle:Extrait – total: 339; main:224; other:115
- it (no template)
- pt:Predefinição:Excerto – total:267; main:167; others:100
- ru:Шаблон:Excerpt – total:3 main:3 others:0
- simple:Excerpt – total:2 main:0 others:2
So given that the Wikipedias overwhelmingly use the template in mainspace where subpages are forbidden, and that the video we are trying to explain demonstrates usage at an article page related to another article page neither of which is a subpage (which is, in fact, a very typical usage of the template), we should not use the word 'subpage' which matches none of these. I've proposed 'page on a subtopic' at the article, which I don't find ideal, but at least it is not inaccurate. Mathglot (talk) 00:39, 14 July 2023 (UTC)
