Talk:Tarballs

I wasn't sure to comment directly on the page or on the talk page. Anyways, some currently listed I think should not be included in the tarball:

• First off I think TitleKey and ExpandTemplates should be in core. ExpandTemplates is pretty useless to people who are not developers or hard-core template creators, so I don't really think that should be included by default if its not part of core. (Rename user is another good candidate for core, but it does sort of make sense as an extension)
• AbuseFilter - Most experienced Wiki-editors have issues wrapping their heads around it, I don't think we should suggest it to people who are not advanced enough to download it from mediawiki.org
• Anti-bot. My understanding is the meat and potato's of this extension are hidden closed-source secrets. We shouldn't give users this unless it has useful filters (I know it does come with a filter for the wrong form-data from bots thing. I'm not sure how useful that filter is. If it is useful I withdraw my opposition to that one)
• ConfirmEdit - I'm kind of concerned this would be more difficult to setup than the installer would be able to handle (but haven't tried, so don't actually know).
• TitleBlacklist, DismissableSiteNotice, CategoryTree - I'm not really opposed to these per se, but think they're kind of frivolous if you're not a major site like Wikimedia. Bawolff 15:30, 9 June 2011 (UTC)

Please Explain How Inclusion Will Work

I would expect that with the decision to include tarballs into the installation would mean that, during installation, I can check / uncheck boxes to ultimately which built-in tarballs are included on my site. Is that the case, or are these candidates built-in?

Perhaps the better request is, please explain installation works with these new tarballs.

Git submodules

As original creator of Semantic Bundle, I just want to add that part of the project was to maintain SVN externals for extensions so they are easy to add to the instance maintained by admin who uses SVN checkout for MediaWiki.

Project also maintained DEV and PROD/STABLE links so admin can choose which version of the bundle to link to.

Now when MediaWiki moved to git, similar goal can be achieved using Git submodules.
