Hi! I got a suggestion, which was already in the article. I think if that image is in the WikiData already, and so the default pic in the Infobox, the suggestion algorithm could be refined to ignore it. Yours: ~~~~
Talk:Structured Data Across Wikimedia/Image Suggestions
Thanks for the suggestion! I'll report it to the team, and see if it's feasible to integrate it in the next iterations.
Hey @JSoos, I checked with the team, and what you ask already happens. The only catch is that the update of the list happens once a month, so the system lags a bit behind. Anyway, can I ask you more about what happened? Can you tell me if it was a notification via web, or via mobile?
Thanks! Nice to hear!
Hi. Since recently multiple users were asking about how to switch the function off, I'm sharing my (and apparently others') feedback on the tool: the issue we are having is that it suggests mostly irrelevant photos, so we are not sure how the mechanism selects photos for proposal but the success rate is near zero. Some photos it personally suggested to me were either not very good quality illustrations, irrelevant of the topic, or awkward, like a random French philosopher's image for the teeny-tiny article of :hu:etatizmus (etatism), whose name isn't even mentioned there. I am guessing it just scans tags from images but illustration isn't really about keywords.... It needs context, like is that thing at all mentioned in the article? :) Not sure how the successrate could be improved.
Hi @Xia, thanks a lot for your feedback. It is really helpful to know this, our scope is to have a useful tool, and if it's not useful, then it's on us to try to fix it.
Can you please link me the discussion where this is happening, so that I can directly intervene and collect the feedback from the other users? The more data, the better for me. Thanks in advance!
hi, it is at https://hu.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikip%C3%A9dia:Kocsmafal_(m%C5%B1szaki)#Tal%C3%A1ltunk_egy_m%C3%A9diaf%C3%A1jlt
Thanks a lot!
I've tried the picture guide and I have a few suggestions and comments:
- for me it mostly offers pictures for lists, we don't put pictures there in the Hungarian wiki;
- it would be nice if it would offer not only the picture, but also a copyable wiki code, if we develop the tool for beginners);
- not every day it offers an image
Hello, thanks for your feedback! I'll answer you in the next bullet points
- unfortunately I don't think we can do something to exclude list articles from the pool of articles, so just keep ignore those notifications. I'll ask the team what can be done in this regard.
- the tool is not supposed to work with beginners, only with users with more than 500 edits on a given wiki - for beginners, there's another tool specific for them
- the tool is supposed to send up to two notifications per week, so that users don't get overwhelmed with notifications
On finding a suitable image for articles:
When I edit an article (on the edit page; source edit, not visual edit), if the article is without any image/illustrations, I would like to see images that might fit to the topic being recommended, maybe on the bottom of the page. This could be a simple search interface (text box) pre-filled with the article title. I have seen this feature used in Wikistories, so if you guys familiar with that, you might know what I'm talking about. If not, you can try it on beta (here for example).
I have been looking for a tool to do this for a long time, for example this can be used in an edit-a-thon, to add images to imageless articles, because we have many good quality images that are waiting to be incorporated to the articles. But so far I have not found what I'm looking for. The exact implementation is open for discussion, like do I have to copy paste the image name, or can I just click the image to add it to the article, and how to accomplish this in visual edit / mobile view, etc. It could be displayed by default, or user have to click a button, or it could be activated/de-activated through settings, etc.
That's from an editor's point of view. From a reader's point of view, I'd love to see the link to Commons Category or Commons category is prominently displayed, or more easily found, rather than hiding in the bottom of the page (in "See also" section, or "External Links" section, usually using "commonscat" template), or even not present in some smaller projects. If the data is available in Wikidata that links a concept in multiple Wikipedias to a Commons category or gallery, the shortcut to that Commons category or gallery could be made available (or more prominently displayed) through a button, just like the interwiki button is displayed right on top (on mobile view/new skin), or in the left sidebar (on desktop view), the Commons category link could be prominently displayed like interwiki does as well.
And then, with regards to my other comment in Topic:X3lvi85jtk2yb9v1, I hope the user have some say in the algorithm of the displayed suggestions, either by vote up/vote down, or other mechanism, so editors from multiple Wikipedia editions could collaborate what images would be best displayed in that topic across languages. We should also be able to see basic statistics, such as how many articles across languages that uses the same image (not the total usage of an image across all namespaces in all projects, but for the same concept, as listed in one Wikidata item, e.g. File:X.jpg is used in article X in 5 languages, and so forth.)
Another idea: if an article is available in multiple Wikipedias, then in editions where no image present, suggestion for images could be pooled from the other Wikipedias, ideally by frequency of use (e.gl. if an image is used in 10 other Wikipedias, then it's highly possible that image would be good for the imageless article). The mechanism could also connected to Wikipedia editors who watched that particular article, they would be notified when certain popular images (used in, let's say more than 10 editions) is being recommended for that imageless article.
This thread will address two of the topics related to readability and description of images:
- How can we help users add appropriate captions?
- How can we help users add appropriate alt-text?
1 - tools to add captions; tool to migrate artwork template machine readable metadata to captions.
2 - tool similar to alt text tool on english wikipedia

Curiosity to Wikidata created a mind-set for images. What do I see? Describe the image. Use few words; discard verbosity. alt text.
Captions are alternate titles of which translate what the picture depicts.
Perceptions of depictions are as varied as the inputs.
For the dyslexic, these two may need inversion.

Maybe this is far-fetched, but Wikipedians constantly captioning images in Wikipedia articles (and other projects). The question is how to incorporate the captions across multiple Wikipedia editions back to Commons and/or Wikidata. Could it be, for example, when I'm editing a File in Commons/Wikidata in my language, and the "smart code" inform me that this File has been used in my language's Wikipedia, and I could click a button to add that caption to the Commons/Wikidata?
The captions of the images used in Wikipedia articles are usually short, descriptive, and has been seen by multiple eyes (more than the description of the file in Commons), so there's a high probability that they are useful additions for caption-less/description-less images. Not true for the reverse: image descriptions in Commons are not necessarily suited to be used as image captions in Wikipedia articles.
This thread will address the general expectations about the project. What is your opinion about the approaches outlined above? Which one do you consider it to be more useful for you?
A picture speaks a thousand words. Perhaps we should try to narrow this down a bit.
Wikidata, metadata; their user-interface to the upload target when added to an article or project.
This would incur after being uploaded when chosen to be added.
or, I read an article, and I have an image that fits perfect. Jimbo say edit the article and bam, editor-owners may or may not get rough. The foundation says let's all play fair. the upload wizard could address potential information correlation.
I use the hunt and peck system of deciphering user-interfaces. perhaps captions on the interface would help the pecking order.
Options will include more results from those not prone to being diligent.

This thread will address two of the topics related to placing of images:
- Should we be helping editors with image placement location?
- How can we help users make sure they are following the local project's conventions, when choosing and placing an image?
- If given a suggestion for location, I would follow it. the interface upload could determine this if prompted.
- A gateway to project conventions when upload image is linked to article. project leaders and talk page notices.
- No. 2 is meta data. perhaps beyond my simpleness.
- It is the 21st century.
