Hi! I didn't find any "preferences" button to edit them, using the default mobile theme.
Is a patch planned for this? TechAcquisitor (talk) 15:13, 30 January 2021 (UTC)
- Hey, can you explain what you are trying to do in more detail? I am not sure that I understand. Thanks. AHollender (WMF) (talk) 14:24, 1 February 2021 (UTC)
- Hi @AHollender (WMF)!
- Sorry, I posted this message from my mobile...
- So, via the mobile theme (html/css template), I didn't find a link to Special:Preferences, idem for the "preferences" page on Wikipedia FR. TechAcquisitor (talk) 15:09, 1 February 2021 (UTC)
- The mobile site (https://fr.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikip%C3%A9dia:Accueil_principal) does not have a "Preferences" page. Instead it has a "Settings" page (https://fr.m.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Sp%C3%A9cial:MobileOptions).
- What is it you are trying to do with preferences? AHollender (WMF) (talk) 15:19, 1 February 2021 (UTC)
- I would just like to access the same settings on pc as on mobile, which is currently not the case. The "Settings" page does not display the same content as the "Preferences" page.
- Translated with DeepL. TechAcquisitor (talk) 16:14, 1 February 2021 (UTC)
- That's correct. The "Preferences" page controls the Desktop skins (Vector, Monobook, Timeless, etc.). However the mobile site uses a unique skin (MobileFrontend) so it has a different settings page.
- If you need to access the "Preferences" page from your mobile, please scroll all the way to the bottom of the page and in the footer you will see a link called "Desktop". If you click this link you will be viewing the desktop site on your mobile. From there you can go to "Preferences". AHollender (WMF) (talk) 16:21, 1 February 2021 (UTC)
- Do you think an update will fix this problem?
- Thanks for your answers, @AHollender (WMF). Wishing you a good start to the evening. TechAcquisitor (talk) 18:44, 1 February 2021 (UTC)
- @TechAcquisitor: My team is now working on this - please take a look at the design mockups at Moderator Tools/Content moderation on mobile web/Preferences and let us know what you think! Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 14:35, 15 June 2022 (UTC)
I would find it helpful to have a coloured feedback, whether contributions have already been viewed, or similar. Quant8 (talk) 18:47, 13 February 2021 (UTC)
- Hey @Quant8 can you please explain what screen you are referring to? Thanks Hold your horses (talk) 14:22, 16 April 2021 (UTC)
- @AHollender (WMF) Hold your horses (talk) 14:22, 16 April 2021 (UTC)
- I'm talking about my user contributions list, there I had wished as a newbie to see at the colored marking which of my edits are already sighted and which are not. Greeting Quant8 Quant8 (talk) 14:46, 16 April 2021 (UTC)
- Hello, I now know why my request can not be understood, viewing/sighting (in German: Sichten) is a peculiarity that only the German, Russian and Polish Wikipedia have, the meaning is briefly explained here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia#Restrictions. Greetings. Quant8 (talk) 15:13, 2 May 2021 (UTC)
- @Quant8 ok, I think I understand your request. This seems like a proposal that would be relevant beyond the scope of "advanced" mode on mobile. Perhaps you could post about it on the Village Pump of your home Wikipedia? AHollender (WMF) (talk) 21:32, 27 May 2021 (UTC)
It would be great if the advanced mode would include administrative tools (block, change user rights etc) Strainu (talk) 17:43, 27 February 2021 (UTC)
- I support this. I only use smartphone and as sysop at ptwikinews i can't do too much at the mobile version. @AHollender (WMF) pls see this. Liquet (talk) 14:35, 17 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Liquet would you be able to open a feature request about this on Phabricator and tag it with Advance Mobile Contributions? AHollender (WMF) (talk) 21:30, 27 May 2021 (UTC)

Wiktionary needs to have an RFC to request disabling this feature. |

I've been using Wiktionary as an aid for learning a second language. It's been great, except every time I open a new page it just opens every single section/heading automatically, with no setting to change it.
Often, by the time I scroll far enough to find the language I'm looking for, I've lost focus on my goal and it's putting unnecessary stress on my mind, which is detrimental to the whole process.
Just adding an option to leave the sections closed would save me a lot of time and stress. 184.151.230.18 (talk) 16:01, 24 May 2021 (UTC)
- I can not possibly be the only one with this problem. TartanosPajamos (talk) 05:49, 8 June 2021 (UTC)
- I'm not sure why wikitionary needs section collapsing on mobile.
- It might be worth proposing on
- a configuration change to disable this feature on https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Wiktionary:Community_Portal
- The relevant configuration is:

Someone may want to correct the following sentences, on https://m.mediawiki.org/wiki/Reading/Web/Advanced_mobile_contributions
under Project Summary > Advanced Mode
“....Advanced mode adds navigational elements and menus [1]which that allow easy access to talk pages, history pages, [2]Page information, and various other page tools, user tools, and special pages. [3] Additionally special pages...”
Suggested edited version: “Advanced mode adds navigational elements and menus, allowing easy access to talk pages, history pages, Page information, and various other page tools, user tools, and special pages. Additionally, special pages...”
Changes: 1. Make active via use of “allowing” vs “which” or “that”. Or, at a minimum, use either “which” or “that”, not both. 2. Should “Page” be capitalized here? It isn’t in multiple uses throughout sentence. Yet it is consistent with actual “Page info” links throughout site. 3. Add comma following “Additionally”; standard grammar. Ribbitribit (talk) 19:02, 6 June 2021 (UTC)

How to add categories now? The option is gone. Edu! (talk) 20:03, 9 June 2021 (UTC)
- You will need to enable a gadget in Special:Preferences e.g. Hotcat Jdlrobson (talk) 20:55, 9 June 2021 (UTC)
- @Jdlrobson: but these gadgets don't work on the mobile version. Wikipedia still has the option to add categories, but not Wikinews and Wikivoyage. Edu! (talk) 21:25, 9 June 2021 (UTC)
- They need to be enabled to have mobile targets like so:

- Which language projects are you wanting to enable them on? I can turn them on for you. Jdlrobson (talk) 00:15, 10 June 2021 (UTC)
- I edited it on Wikinews
and it's working(1), thanks. - update: @Jdlrobson: I tried to add a category, but an error occurs. On Wikimedia Commons too. Edu! (talk) 00:55, 10 June 2021 (UTC)
- There was an error with the script. I believe it should be fixed now. Jdlrobson (talk) 03:16, 10 June 2021 (UTC)
- @Jdlrobson: that's right now, thanks. Could you also change the category suggestions? Currently the text is overlapping the other (example) Edu! (talk) 13:42, 10 June 2021 (UTC)
- Did you share the correct example link?
- I'm not sure how to improve the design of the gadget as I am not actually it's maintainer so I'd suggest requesting a fix on its talk page. Jdlrobson (talk) 15:12, 10 June 2021 (UTC)

Check gadgets if you see categories twice |

The category section appears twice on my mobile screen when I turn on the 'Advanced mode'. I have tried different devices and turning it off and on but the result is the same.
This is what I am talking about. Gotitbro (talk) 16:20, 28 June 2021 (UTC)
- I'm not sure why this would appear twice unless a gadget is involved.
- Do you have "Add categories to the mobile interface" enabled on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets ?
- @User:TheDJ perhaps that gadget should be disabled/modified now? Jdlrobson (talk) 17:17, 28 June 2021 (UTC)
- Yes, I did. I have disable it now, thanks. Gotitbro (talk) 17:20, 28 June 2021 (UTC)

Hi I'm MilkyGreentea so I wanna translate that "Advanced mode" into Indonesian (Bahasa Indonesia) in this website. So How? MilkyGreentea (talk) 03:53, 7 October 2021 (UTC)
- Hello, @MilkyGreentea, have you worked on the Bahasa Indonesia translation page yet? Everything starts at that page if you wish to translate.
- Good luck! Omotecho (talk) 07:22, 7 October 2021 (UTC)
- Anyways that page doesn't exist I guess MilkyGreentea (talk) 08:33, 7 October 2021 (UTC)
- @MilkyGreentea, hello, the page needs to be worked on meta, or the link I posted. No, Bahasa-Indonesia translation is not existing yet, since no translation is contributed.
- To link to that page, you can link from Wikipedia/id, but I suggest you will translate into Bahasa Indonesia on meta beforehand.
- Ask at id.Wikipedia:Warung_Kopi for how to link to which pagespace on Wikipedia/id. Omotecho (talk) 09:11, 7 October 2021 (UTC)
- Thank MilkyGreentea (talk) 09:14, 7 October 2021 (UTC)
- @MilkyGreentea, sorry, link error, that page exists on Reading/Web/Advanced mobile contributions/id. To have any information about mobile contribution on Wikipedia/id, you prepare on meta first:
- you translate on meta;
- you discuss with admins on Wikipedia/id and ask them post a notice banner, or VillagePump discussion;
- at that time, that notice/message will tell (a) people to read meta page; and/or (b) you and admins create a Project page on Wikipedia/id, only if you forecast needs to support/discuss.
- I confess I have no experience discussing new project to create on Wikipedia, and I hope you will consult peer editors/translators on Bahasa Indonesia. Omotecho (talk) 09:15, 7 October 2021 (UTC)
- Thank again MilkyGreentea (talk) 09:16, 7 October 2021 (UTC)
- Thank you so much MilkyGreentea (talk) 08:32, 7 October 2021 (UTC)
- @MilkyGreentea You can translate the "advanced mode" messages and other parts of MobileFrontend at translatewiki:. Specifically here and here for the advanced mode messages in Indonesian. Those translations will then get updated to Indonesian Wikipedia. Dylsss (talk) 04:02, 10 October 2021 (UTC)
- Okay, thanks MilkyGreentea (talk) 11:44, 11 October 2021 (UTC)

A few months ago, the category display format was updated to show all categories. However, I found it easier to read in a display format that only displayed the previous category buttons.
Is it possible to revert to the previous display format? MSY-07 (talk) 02:02, 10 October 2021 (UTC)

A few months ago, categories were displayed without having to set up Advanced mode. However, now the categories are not displayed unless the Advanced mode is set. In this case, readers who are not logged in to Wikipedia cannot use the category.
Is there a way to display categories without setting Advanced mode? MSY-07 (talk) 02:34, 10 October 2021 (UTC)

The mobile version is generally great and well optimised.
But the sections (language headers) are collapsible yet auto expand. As far as I know, this cannot be changed.
To me, this makes no sense. Why would you want to collapse a section after it's already opened? The only useful case for collapsible sections is so they can be collapsed by default (or at least have that as an option)
For example, if you were looking for the conjugation of "ter" in Portuguese, the experience is really bad because it's near the end of a very long list of entries, and all of the languages expand by default, with no table of contents either. So you have to scroll through the whole thing, making sure you don't miss the language headers as you do, so you know how close to P you are. 195.23.41.35 (talk) 11:29, 15 October 2021 (UTC)
