Admin functionality

edit

Will this project include adding basic admin functionality to the mobile front-end? Easy access to delete and protect pages, and blocking users would be great. Ignacio Rodríguez (talk) 12:10, 16 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hey @Ninovolador — I'm Alex, a WMF designer & researcher working on this project. Thanks for raising this question. I coincidentally realized about two weeks ago that we've neglected to address admin workflows thus far. We certainly would like to include some of the admin functionalities you mentioned above, as well as possibly some others, to the mobile site as part of this project. I'm curious if you could express your preference in terms of priority of the functionalities you mentioned? Also, @CKoerner (WMF) pointed me towards this list, which includes some additional administrator functions. I'm also curious if any of those would be valuable for you on mobile, again in priority order if possible. Thanks. AHollender (WMF) (talk) 02:38, 28 November 2018 (UTC)Reply
Hi
I think that i can do a list. Keep in mind that I am a small wiki admin, so my priorities can and will differ substantially from the ones at larger wikis.
  1. deleting
  2. blocking
  3. protecting
  4. viewing/restoring deleted pages
  5. moving pages (overriding titles)
But mainly the first three. The other tasks i do, such as MediaWiki editing or merging are exceptional, and are more suitable for working on the desktop.
The other thing i do the most is rollback, but that's already been working on, i think Ignacio Rodríguez (talk) 15:32, 28 November 2018 (UTC)Reply
@AHollender (WMF)
Sorry for double posting, but didn't knew how to do the mentions. Ignacio Rodríguez (talk) 15:34, 28 November 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Ninovolador awesome, thank you so much. I appreciate you noting the size of the wiki you are an admin of — I will make sure to reach out to some admins of other sizes as well. AHollender (WMF) (talk) 02:04, 29 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

Preferences in Settings

Will it be possible to add the Special:Preferences in the settings. The settings currently is not as good.

Hi @AdrianWikiEditor - we had some discussions on whether to add Special:Preferences to AMC mode. We initially decided against it as many of the settings in Preferences control the desktop experience, while the settings in the current settings menu are mobile-focused. However, we can see how having access to both could be useful. I'm wondering if you could tell us some more on how you would use Special:Preferences on mobile? OVasileva (WMF) (talk) 16:32, 28 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
Hey @OVasileva (WMF): , Thanks for the update, 7 months later.. I understand how you'd like the settings different depending on what device your using. I'd suggest adding the normal mobile settings, then have some sort of clickable word link that says "Advanced Settings". That way, both normal, and advanced users can tweak to there liking. I'd find a use because sometimes your not always with your computer and want to change something on your phone. AdrianWikiEditor (talk) 18:23, 28 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
Hey @AdrianWikiEditor, can you explain your thinking/need for wanting access to Special:Preferences from your phone in more detail? You mentioned "I'd find a use because sometimes your not always with your computer and want to change something on your phone." Which desktop preference specifically do you want to be able to control from your phone, and why? I think it's helpful to clarify the need as specifically as possible so we can understand the workflow and also discuss possible solutions. AHollender (WMF) (talk) 13:18, 16 July 2019 (UTC)Reply
@AHollender (WMF) While I would say all of tabs, the one I am mainly focused on using the "User profile" tab. It feels so cross platform with all the ways it used depending on what platform it is. They have features such as the ability to change ones password, change in signature exc, and not so much the font style or other computer exclusive platforms. AdrianWikiEditor (talk) 19:43, 22 July 2019 (UTC)Reply
@AdrianWikiEditor thanks for clarifying; that makes sense to me. I've opened a task here (https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T229818) which is a prompt for us to investigate this further. It would be useful to talk with some developers as well as other editors to form an understanding of the cost/benefit of this feature, as well as what other preferences might make sense to expose on mobile. I very much value and appreciate your feedback.
On another note, have you had a chance to try out the Advanced Mobile Contributions mode yet? It will be released on en.wiki in a week or two, however it's currently available on Spanish, Indonesian, Arabic, Persian, Italian, Thai, and Japanese. @AHollender (WMF): Thanks for deploying it on English Wikipedia. It's awesome.:) I noticed that sidebar is missing some important links like RecentChanges, New page Patrol, Pending Changes etc. I would love to have these links in mobile sidebar. Ainz Ooal Gown (talk) 15:54, 7 August 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Masumrezarock100 I'm glad you like the feature : ) Regarding additional links in the sidebar main menu — thanks for bringing that up. Firstly, a link to Recent changes will appear in the sidebar main menu after tomorrow's deployment (and it links to a nice, mobile-friendly version of recent changes). Secondly, the reason why we didn't include links to even more pages is because many special pages unfortunately still don't display well on mobile. If there are pages you think are popular advanced editors, and they display well on mobile, then there's a chance we could add them.
Lastly I'll mention that we hope at some point in the future to allow wikis to configure that menu as they wish, such that they can choose which links show up there. However we don't have plans to enable that as of now. AHollender (WMF) (talk) 20:35, 7 August 2019 (UTC)Reply
@AHollender (WMF): Thanks for the deployment of new RecentChanges. I guess you are right about the special pages. NewPagesPatrol isn't optimized for mobile at all. Page Curation tool don't even load. A question, is it possible to configure side menu using user JavaScripts? Ainz Ooal Gown (talk) 20:54, 7 August 2019 (UTC)Reply
Feature request: Short descriptions and page assessment rating. I would love to see short descriptions beneath page titles. Ainz Ooal Gown (talk) 00:09, 8 August 2019 (UTC)Reply
@AHollender (WMF) I have not. I am excited for it to be in English and thank you for opening a task. I'll try to actively participate in it as well. AdrianWikiEditor (talk) 12:11, 6 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Xaosflux and AdrianWikiEditor: My team is now working on this - please take a look at the design mockups at Moderator Tools/Content moderation on mobile web/Preferences and let us know what you think! Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 14:34, 15 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
