wikimatrix.org
editFor the last few years we've always sent people to http://wikimatrix.org , does it lack something now? Nemo 10:50, 12 March 2013 (UTC)
Wikia
editIn case you're planning on starting a wiki on Wikia, don't. They are rude, awful people that only care about money. You'd be much better of just paying for a better service where you can actually decide how you operate and what skin you use. 95.145.110.98 19:29, 13 April 2013 (UTC)
- I have found them friendly, courteous, and responsive. They do require that .css files permit the appearance of their advertising. They are resistant to hosting forks of Wikipedia but that is probably not what most of you will be doing. Fred Bauder (talk) 13:10, 3 November 2013 (UTC)
Network Solutions
editAs of 2013 the VPS offered by Network Solutions offered a Centos 4 OS which was not suitable for installation of Lua modules without substantial upgrading of its setup which could not be accomplished using the control panel. [:En:GNU Compiler Collection GCC] needed to be upgraded manually, a daunting task in order for Lua dependencies to be installed. Upside, you will learn a lot... Fred Bauder (talk) 12:33, 21 October 2013 (UTC)
ibiblio
editAs of early 2013 ibiblio granted only 500mb of memory to hosted wikis. This will not work out for a wiki of any size. The installation of dependencies requires negotiation with the technical staff, which changes over the years with the degree of support varying. As you do not have root access changing anything which requires root access involves making requests to the technical staff which may or may not be understood or responded to. When Wikinfo left ibibio after several years of not running jobs there were several hundred thousand jobs in the queue. Fred Bauder (talk) 12:21, 3 November 2013 (UTC)
1 and 1
editFor whatever reason servers on 1 and 1 allocate only 4G memory to the var partition. Mysql is usually located in /var. Attempts to load backup .sql files or to populate the tables in mysql will result in full files and failure. "df -h" then produces this result:
[user]# sudo df -h Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/mapper/vg00-var 4.0G 4.0G 0 100% /var
There is also a shortage of inodes, only 262144. Each thumbnail in your images directory will take one inode...
The solution, which has worked with Ubuntu and Centos on 1&1, is to resize the partition:
sudo lvextend -L +46G /dev/mapper/vg00-var Extending logical volume var to 50.00 GiB Logical volume var successfully resized&
Then:
[user]# sudo resize2fs /dev/mapper/vg00-var resize2fs 1.41.12 (17-May-2010) Filesystem at /dev/mapper/vg00-var is mounted on /var; on-line resizing required old desc_blocks = 1, new_desc_blocks = 4 Performing an on-line resize of /dev/mapper/vg00-var to 13107200 (4k) blocks. df The filesystem on /dev/mapper/vg00-var is now 13107200 blocks long. [user]# df Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on /dev/mapper/vg00-var 51606140 4133400 44851892 9% /var [user]# df -i Filesystem Inodes IUsed IFree IUse% Mounted on /dev/mapper/vg00-var 3276800 42688 3234112 2% /var
This problem may manifest as a mysql error such as "ERROR 1114 (HY000) at line 9061: The table 'hrtext' is full" which gives a bad clue as you might think something has to be done about how mysql is configured when the actual problem is lack of allocated disc space. Tophostingreviews.co
editI'm trying to get this article cited http://www.tophostingreviews.co/what-is-the-best-hosting-company/ on Hosting Services page, would it be relevant? Ghughes (talk) 02:35, 30 March 2014 (UTC)

Wikkii
editHas Wikkii died? If so I think it should be removed from the page.
David Winder 82.26.76.159 21:11, 10 July 2014 (UTC)

Hosting service that has Visual Editor and Flow
editHi All
Looking for a hosting service that supports visual editor and flow, any suggestions?
Thanks Mrjohncummings (talk) 05:41, 16 October 2014 (UTC)
- @Mrjohncummings, did you find such a service? 5.102.253.221 15:09, 22 December 2014 (UTC)
- Not exactly, I just installed Wordpress and used a visual editor wiki, it has an equivalent of the features I was looking for, thanks for asking :) Mrjohncummings (talk) 04:28, 15 January 2015 (UTC)
Candidate for deletion
editDisagree. It is useful to have a list of hosting providers that support MediaWiki, even if it's incomplete and includes commercial services. Rob Kam (talk) 05:47, 14 November 2014 (UTC)
- I have mixed feelings here. On one hand it is indeed pretty useful to have a list of hosters providing tailored environments for MediaWiki, on the other hand this list also currently includes hosters what provide webspace which may presumably be capable of running MediaWiki to some (which?) extent and do not even mention MediaWiki on their homepage. I abstain. [[kgh]] (talk) 09:54, 14 November 2014 (UTC)
- Maybe trim the list to only include services that specialize in MediaWiki? Or at least mention it as something they support explicitly? ^demon[omg plz] 18:20, 14 November 2014 (UTC)
- Indeed, this would be a way out. [[kgh]] (talk) 18:36, 15 November 2014 (UTC)
- Agreed. Also, I disagree with the premise of the notice that the page is advertising; I consider it to be potentially valuable information. Isidore (talk) 12:47, 16 November 2014 (UTC)
- This information ought to be but isn't, available on WikiApiary. Rob Kam (talk) 13:26, 16 November 2014 (UTC)
- So i think we can remove the delete notice? :) Florianschmidtwelzow (talk) 08:50, 16 December 2014 (UTC)
- This discussion was started before the deletion notice was put up and wasn't started as a response to the current deletion request. Regardless, I would support deleting this page for several reasons:
- This page has become a target for spammers and those wishing to promote their companies. It's essentially serving as an advertisement with little benefit to the MediaWiki community.
- Pretty much every hosting provider out there supports MediaWiki, even if they don't explicitly say so. If a hosting provider has PHP and MySQL (which just about everyone has), the end user can run MediaWiki without any issues.
- There's no end to the list. We'd have to list every hosting provider out there. It'll be much easier for end users to simply search for hosting themselves, as pretty much every hosting company can run MediaWiki.
- A list of farms is already available on Wikipedia.
- As far as I know, no one here has actually validated the listed companies' claims to offer "optimized" MediaWiki hosting or "specialized" MediaWiki hosting. I'm fairly certain those are merely marketing terms and the performance and security wouldn't differ from "generic" hosting. Melben1821 (talk) 08:40, 18 December 2014 (UTC)
- > This discussion was started before the deletion notice was put up and wasn't started as a response to the current deletion request.
- That's not correct. The delete request was added by ^demon here and seems to be accidently removed here (the edit summary doesn't respond to the delete requests given reason). You linked a re-add of the delete request :)
- > A list of farms is already available on Wikipedia.
- Maybe we should link to it from here, instead of just deleting :) Florianschmidtwelzow (talk) 09:56, 18 December 2014 (UTC)
- I still don't see the value of such a list when pretty much every shared hosting provider out there can run MediaWiki without any issues. It's kinda like if WordPress maintained a list of all hosting providers that can run WordPress (read: every host out there). MediaWiki doesn't have any unique requirements and one can safely assume that the vast majority of hosting providers can run it perfectly fine. If MediaWiki indeed needed technologies that aren't normally provided by hosting providers (e.g. Ruby) then I'd fully support having such a list, but that's simply not the case. I guess if people insisted on keeping this page, a redirect to the relevant Wikipedia page seems to be a fair compromise? Melben1821 (talk) 12:48, 18 December 2014 (UTC)

- Keep this list. The columns provide useful starting info. No one else is doing much useful compilation of info on MediaWiki hosting. The main Wikipedia page is only for wiki farms. And those wiki farms are frequently in trouble or down. So people are very much interested in more stable places to put MediaWiki wikis. And this site is MediaWiki.org. Little else is as important for our MediaWiki headquarters than helping more people use MediaWiki. Wiki farms are having a hard time, and the number of active editors (5 or more edits a month) is declining on Wikipedia. Volunteers and staff need to wake up, and be more helpful. This list is helpful. Timeshifter (talk) 09:44, 10 January 2015 (UTC)

Update MyWikis
editWould somebody please add for MyWikis, they now offer VisualEditor:
| [http://www.mywikis.com/ MyWikis] | USA | Yes | | no | paid | Yes (included) | FTP and SSH | Ticketed support system, email, and phone | Yes | Unlimited storage, unlimited bandwidth. VisualEditor available with MyWikis Pro and above plans.<br />[https://www.mywikis.com/hostedparsoid A dirt-cheap hosted Parsoid plan] is available to non-MyWikis wikis.
If you would like to corroborate this with MyWikis Support, please feel free to email them at contact [at] mywikis [dot] com. Thanks! Grapetheratclerk (talk) 04:46, 28 November 2015 (UTC)

Is FlexWiki on this list actually still hosting?
editAll I see when I visit the linked site is a Main Page that tells the user they offer MediaWiki hosting. The only other page on the wiki describes Visual Editor. I can't find anything that suggests they offer MediaWiki hosting anywhere else but that main page, and certainly no way to get in on it. :-/ Should it be removed from this list? Add Hosting Provider
editHello,
the german hosting provider linevast (https://linevast.de/angebote/webspace-mieten.html) does offer an automatic install of mediawiki (also with automatic upgrades, backups and restore option).
The webspace is not for free, but the 1-click-setup is free included. It is not a free hosting.
Regards! Doringne (talk) 17:27, 20 July 2016 (UTC)

- Did you try http://thehosting.store ?
- They’ve a free plan for starters and also plans from $4.99 to $9.99 . Best!

Is MyWikis still in business?
editI signed up for the hosting service MyWikis several weeks ago and have not had any communication with them. I recently created a help ticket on their website, but did not get any communication from them. I know that WikiMedia does not have any involvement in these commercial activities, but would appreciate it if someone know something they would let the community know. If the site no longer is accepting hosting commitments, I would consider removing them from the active list on this page.
HarryDearing (talk) 13:44, 7 January 2017 (UTC)
- According to their Twitter (https://twitter.com/mywikis) they appear to be. MorpheusKafka (talk) 02:15, 17 January 2017 (UTC)
- MyWikis hosting service is in business. Since my post, I have been able to utilize their services with no issues. I think that the lack of communication was due to the holiday season (which they warned about in social media). HarryDearing (talk) 15:51, 4 February 2017 (UTC)
Privacy features of the hosts
editDo we know of any hosts that take privacy of their users (and readers) seriously and pro-actively take measures to protect it? If so it might be a nice quality to add to the table. Things like having a warrant canary would be things to look for. Greg G (talk) 18:52, 31 January 2017 (UTC)

Can I request to add CiviHosting to this page. I believe the code would be:
| [https://civihosting.com/mediawiki-hosting/ CiviHosting] | USA, Europe | | | no | paid | Yes | SSH access | 24/7 Support | Yes | Shared and VPS accounts, free installation and migration, 24/7 support
We are a host actively involved in supporting FOSS, with contributions to several including Drupal, CiviCRM and most lately Nextcloud: https://nextcloud.com/blog/introducing-civihosting/
Thank you. DavidFeldman (talk) 17:20, 3 July 2017 (UTC)
It would be nice to have links to wikis hosted
editIt would be nice to have 1-4 examples of publicly available wikis hosted by each service 72.22.12.62 (talk) 18:07, 1 November 2017 (UTC)
- Maybe a link to the WikiApiary page for that hosting would suffice. Ciencia Al Poder (talk) 10:18, 2 November 2017 (UTC)

editThere is "Mysite Users (マイサイト・ユーザーズ)" in Mediawiki hosting service in Japan. Will you add it?

Distinguishing basically self-hosted and farms
editI think it does not make sense to have this table like this. Instead services that provide basically self-hosting should be separated from veritable wiki farms like ShoutWiki, Fandom, Miraheze who do most of the work and don't provide FTP/SSH. 178.191.226.45 (talk) 19:50, 8 November 2022 (UTC)
